Chapter1: Safety Precautions

For the sake of personal safety and avoidance of property loss, please read these safety
precautions carefully before test running and use of the driver.
The following safety measures must be strictly followed:
Read this user manual carefully.
Observe safety precautions strictly.
Use a multi-meter to verify that the voltage on the driver terminals is safe.
Never plug or unplug motor wires while the driver is in ON condition; otherwise it may damage
the driver
Do not remove the housing of the driver when the power is on or the driver is working.
To avoid personal injury and property loss, only qualified and service-trained personnel should
operate the driver.
Do not insert any object into the driver, which may cause damage to the driver.
If any fault occurs to the drive, please return the driver for maintenance. Trying to repair the
driver without any authorization or improper operation may cause damage to the driver and
also will avoid the warranty.

Direction Signal: This signal has low/high
voltage levels, representing two directions of
motor rotation. 4-5V* when DIR-HIGH, 0-0.5V
when DIR-LOW. Please note that rotation
direction is also related to motor-driver wiring
match. Exchanging the connection of two wires
for a coil to the driver will reverse motion
direction.

Pulse signal: This input represents pulse signal,

each rising edge active; 4-5V *when PUL-HIGH,
0-0.5V when PUL-LOW. For reliable response,
pulse width should be longer than 1.2s.
Disable signal: This signal is used for
enabling/disabling the driver. Usually left
UNCONNECTED (ENABLED). The user can disable
the drive at any time by giving a +5VDC* supply
to this input with respect to DIS-.

Speed Adjustment using Potentiometer: An

external POT can be connected for speed
adjustment in Auto Mode.PT3 the input, PVT
the variable port must be connected accordingly
for speed adjustments. This is an optional
feature.
Ground for Potentiometer and analog input. It
can be used either for potentiometer or analog
at a time.
External 0-10V can be used to vary the motor
speed. This feature is an optional one.

*Note: All the above explanations based on TTL (5V) logic. If the customer wants to work with PLC logic (24V),
please connect a series current-limiting resistor (Rext) with value of 2.2KOhm. Refer following figure 3.3.1:

Chapter 6: Trouble Shooting

6.1 Self testing
The user can self test the driver if the power supply section is OK (if green LED glows). For self
testing connect the motor phase properly and make sure that LED status are correct, also
change the micro-stepping and current settings in piano type switches and set the mode switch
in auto mode (by switching the mode switch to ON position). Vary the speed either by
potentiometer or by external analog input. And the motor will run if there is no error condition.
Also check whether direction and disable states are working by connecting the corresponding
pins to +5V with respect to corresponding grounds.
These are the steps to check the basic functionality of a drive.

6.2 User Level Trouble Shooting Guide

The table given below shows some user level trouble shooting tips which may useful while
working with dST3640 with an external pulse generator.

Chapter 7: Calculations
7.1 Motor Speed Calculation
The speed of the motor is depended on some parameters viz. step angle, micro step
resolution and number of pulses per second applied. Pulse input signal controls the speed and
acceleration of the motor. The speed is proportional to the pulse frequency.
Motor speed in rotations/sec =

X No. of pulses/sec (pps)

Ns X Resolution
Where,
Ns
= 200 (Steps per rotation) for 1.8step angle motors
Resolution
= 1.256 (micro steps per step) depends on Rotary switch position
No. of pulses/sec = the number of pulses per second applied to PULSE pin (Frequency)
Note: Motor may stall at sudden start of the motor and it depends on the applied voltage,
motor parameters and load on the motor. Accelerating the motor from a lower rpm to the
required rpm will reduce the chance of a motor stall. Torque will be reduced at higher speed.
