Lesson Summary:
The lesson will entail the use of multiple navigation pieces to help students to become familiar with the tools.

We will then discuss 10 different geographical landscapes and cultures that surround it. Will use Oculus Rift
devices and iPads to discover and show environments and changes. Also, discuss culture in these
environments.
Estimated Duration:
This Lesson will take a total of 3 hrs broken up

Commentary: My approach to the lesson will be the students discovery and curiosity. I will try to implement
as many student driven insights as possible. We will not have the time to go through all of the students wants,
and some of the students will have a hard time operating the equipment. The way that I plan to hook the
children is through the virtual environment that I will guide them through.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
.
The first 10 minutes will be a discussion on getting to where we need to go, and how do we know?
The next 10 minutes I will show the students Google Maps on the Smart Board and point out the compass
directions layout and show them a demonstration of how this is used.
10 minutes for discussion and Q&A. Use guided questions to navigation pieces.
The next 5 minutes will be a quick show of Google Earth on the Smart board to try and gather some interest.
The next 10 minutes I will show the students a standard map and explain the comparisons.
Then 10 minutes of drawing personal maps on iPad or paper of the classroom by each student. They will be
turned in for review.
The next 5 minutes explain importance of knowing where to go and prelude to landscapes.
Send homework for map of house or neighborhood depending on conflict from parents and privacy concerns.
To collect tomorrow.
Day 2:
The first 10 minutes will be dedicated to showing the students what we will be doing with landscapes and the
10 different landscapes we will be seeing.
The next 30 minutes I will take the students through a guided tour in Oculus Rift for each individual student.
This lesson will be structured in the landscapes, but will allow the students interaction within the environment
to keep their attention. I will not be having the Rift devices on, but watching the students view in displayed
monitors. This allows to for identification. In this we will also see societal norms in that environment. Also a

select few landscapes will show a time lapse in change based on environmental effects.
The next 10 minutes will be drawing students favorite landscape on iPads on Autodesk or paper. Identify any
misconceptions
10 minutes class matching activity on iPads for landscapes and qualities of the landscapes.
Day 3:
10 Minutes of review on the previous information
30 minutes of culture and societies. The pros and cons of certain environments and how we as people have
affected these environments.
10 Minutes of drawing endangered species.
10 minutes of matching cultures to environment on the iPads i.e. fisherman to water
Day 4:
20 minutes of individual matching of day 1 material
20 minutes of day 2 matching
20 minutes of day 3 matching

Pre-Assessment:
The pre-assessment strategy for this will be during the follow up discussion of each lesson and the activities.
This will help to identify where the students understanding may be based on reactions and
engagement/questions.

Scoring Guidelines:
Scoring will be based on the students activities. With the drawn maps and matching activities the
immediate grading will help to identify problem areas. Maps will be on number of correct symbols and
matching will be immediately reported.

Post-Assessment:
The post assessment will be an in class review on iPads with all matching software to show that the students
have learned the material. Other assessments would be paper written, and cut out matching.
Scoring Guidelines:
This will be a percentage score of each items matched.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: This is such a visual based lesson that students who have a vision impairment would be able to have
textured landscapes to feel.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material:

Extension
https://www.google.com/earth/
Students can see different places and see why a navigation would be important.

Homework Options and Home Connections

I would tweet parents, or e-mail them instructions on what information would need to be covered for the
homework assignments. Also if parents do not have access letters will be sent to those in need. Drawing would
be easy and questions as to why we liver where we do may give more to parent student engagement.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This could be integrated in governance due to cultural issues and distance constraints. It also will let students
engage with technological software and tools to help the more easily identify resolutions to their questions.
