Topic: Science
and Technology

Grade Level: 10/11

Lesson Plan:
Research Project
Introduction

Location: Computer
Lab, 120 minute lab
class

Competency 1: Seeks answers or solutions to scientific or technological

problems

The student develops metacognition and seeks well-founded answers

through their ability to discern valuable information.

Learning
Competencies:

Competency 2: Makes the most of his/her knowledge of science and

technology

The student grasps the extent of what they know and where there are
gaps as to direct their learning and interest.
Competency 3: Communicates in the languages used in science and
technology

The student uses learned jargon to discuss the research in a way that
displays their understanding through the written report and their ability to
explain it to others through the presentation.

Learning goals
KWPL worksheet:

Media literacy, self-reliance in research, exploring interests in science.

Progress update
hand in:

Self-check/exercise in punctuality.

Report:

Ability to write a simplified research paper, use objectivity, cite sources.

Presentation:

Communication ability: How well did the students express what they learned?

Engage the class with multiple instructional methods that respect different
learning styles.

Teacher's
responsibilities:

Actively monitor students or groups that are lagging, give instruction and
direction to encourage progress.
For students with IEPs or who are lagging significantly behind the rate of the
class, engage in planning with an intervention specialist to implement a
different rubric and plan a different assessment strategy for the individuals.
In larger classes with many Tier 2 or Tier 3 students, consider obtaining an aid
to handle keeping all students on task and making progress.

Tier 3 modification

During the next step while

the rest of the class is
beginning their worksheet, go
around to the tier 3 students
to give more support on the
instructions and possible
topics.

The teacher works with these students to find topics of

interest and has examples ready for recommendation. The
teacher engages with questions to find out what the
students already know about their topic for them to record.

Research phase: The students now begin to search the

internet for material on their topic.

The teacher opens research

mediums to videos to help
students that might have
difficulty focusing on heavy
scientific articles.

1:56 - 2:00

Final announcements,
reminder of due dates.

The teacher organizes the

out of class meet up to
ensure that the tier 2
students are making
progress.

40% - Written report

The teacher organizes the

regular out of class meet ups
for the tier 3 students to
support their learning process

The student shows depth of understanding and describes

aspects of their knowledge and the connections they
imply. They use authentic language that demonstrates
their understanding of the topic. The report is written in
an objective way, maintains professionality throughout.
The citations are in the proper format and are referenced
in the text from the bibliography.

Jeremiah Lee

The students attend and

engage in describing what
they have learned. Some
research is done in the
meeting to confirm good
research methods.
The students reflect on what
they have learned through a
comparison to what they
originally knew from the
KWPL worksheet. They show
that they can reference
information found online in a
bibliography.

40% - Oral
presentation

260587356

The student engages the

class with a meaningful
depth of information but at
a level that is still easily
understood. The pace and
tone of their voice is steady
and supports their
message.

The students produce a video or recorded presentation

that allows for them to have time to plan out and execute
their presentation without the stress of being put on the
spot in front of the class.
