me te Cte lia SEL Introduction The early 1900s signated the beginning of a new era in modem service pistol development, From the fertile mind of America’s most famous gun inventor, John M. Browning, came what was to be the most Jewendary combat handgun of all time~the Government Model 1911, baaiter known as the Colt 45 Automatic. Undoubtedly, this pistel mas: teypiece started i all For almost a century, this magnificent warhorse set the standard by which all other service-chass pistols that followed woukl be judged. Metallurgical advancements, along with the exploration of new ‘manufacturing methods and modern materials, have rapidly changed the course of small-arms innovations, Germany’ can take the credit for pioneering the use of plastis in the manufacture of combat arms, going back to World War If and the introduetion of the MP-40 submachine gun (SMC). After the war, similar plastic materials were used on see ondgeneralion military rifle furniture, most notably the eadly American ATCIO, MIG, and MI4; German C3; Belgian FAL, and others. The ‘vomposite worked quite well with the MP-40 SMG firing ristol-calier immunition, but the plastic materials incorporated in the full-powered sssaullrilles proved. less desirable after heing unable to take abuse (ex tracking when dropped on solid ground) and were easily affected by inying climatic conditions. While the develooment of stronger polymer ‘material was under way, wood continued to be used an military hard ‘ware up until the alter part of the 1970s. By the early 1980s, a new supertough polymer had finally become realy. Polymer 2 possessed strength and durability unknoxin in early plastics, This new space-age matenal was virualy indestructine and less suscepaible to warping or cracking even under the most severe climatic conditions, making it the ideal component fora true ulttamodem com bat arm for the new millennigin. Prime examples of these Ist centu ty polymer military marvels include the pioneoting Austian Steyr AUG and the latest Germany made contender, the G36 assault rifle. From burstfring Broomhandle Mauser machine pistols of the 1930s to Hiller's batalion clearing MG-34 machine guns of World War 1, Germany led the way in the new wave of small ams development. ‘Afier the war, most of the original military gunmakers of the Third Reich (except Walther and Mauser) ceased operation. ft was the newly formed company of Heckler & Koch that caried an with the develop ‘ment snd production of advanced weaponry for the madern Wwarior. This wellaespected company alo pioneered the use of modern poly mer in the manufacture ofits service class handeuns, most notably the futuistic Sm double-action only VP 70. ‘The VP-70), which debuted in the early ‘70s, was’ the first polymer framed selflocding pistol in its lass, packing an impressive 15:shot magazine combined with blowback action and a strikertire mecha- ism. The major drawoacks of the VP-70 were its massive size and) excessively heavy trigger pull. A three-round burst-firin model with shoulder stock attachment called YP-70M was offered to the law enforcement market. ronicaly, despite the many futuristic characteris tics bu into the VP-70 pistol, it has failed to gain the market it was aimed for, Presumably it came too soon, at a time when the buying public and law enforcement community were not ready to embrace the belief that the new wonder polymer would stand up to moder ‘ammunition pressures, Since the introduction of sel-loading firearms, {gun inyentors had believed that only ordnance steel coukl provide safe and reliable operation. Then came Gaston Glock, 2 litl-known engineer ftom Vienna, ‘Austria In 1963, he founded Glock C.m.bH. in the Viennese suburb of “THE GLOCK EXOTIC WEAPONS SYSTEM Deutsch Wagram. (The new company’s first products were door pans for the local matkec) As his company gradually expanded, Glock designed and manufacured a varity of miliary and policeelated equipment including. krives, entrenching tools, nondsintesrating tnachine gun belts and flagmeniaion hand grenades for wai I 1982 Glock~now one ofthe most celebrated gun inventors ofthe 20!” century—prodiuced his ist rearm, the Model By the year 2000, Gaston Glock’s patented polymer. pistol had become a sucessful service pistol, used by thousands of police depart mens and dozens of mitary forees around the world, This wonder gun ako became a (op choice among civilian gun owners for personal catty ‘nd delensive applications With over tivo million produced to date and 15 cifeent models to choose from, the Glock pistol will no doubt con tinue t9 set new standards in the design and manufacture of hitech polymer handguns for years to come, Chapter | Design and Function ‘THE MODEL 18: GLOCK’S MYSTERIOUS POLICE MACHINE PISTOL The Glock is unquestionably one of the finest handguns in the world. Although the space-age polymer frame and supecior erganom: ‘es are the primary features ofthis weapon, its outright mechanical sim pilsity is unbeatable Kt took a while te finally convince cle-hard afi vados in North America (who favored allsteel handguns over this toylike polymer version), but it soon became apparent that this brain dul of an Austrian inventor was the shape of things 1o come, OF the many interesting pistol variants currently offered by ick GmbH. in Austria, the Model 18 is the rarest, It was origi nally produced in timited quantities for an Austrian antiterrorist unit. A few samples were brought into the United States for law forcement evaluations sometime in 1989 and received favorable eviews; however, distribution of the machine pistal in. North Anicrica is restricted 10 poliee tactical units and VIP_ protection nents. For this reason, Glock’s Model 18 pocket machine gun will Femiin the most sought after model by private machine gun collec- tory and professional criminals alike. The Model 18, shich is only produced in Omm Para, i a direet descendant of the fist Glock pistol, the Model 17, which is chambered for the popular 9mm Parabellum, The Model 18 features a selective fire capability and delivers 1,200 rounds per minute (rpm? in fully automat fc mode, Except for the fireselector switch mounted to the left side of the slide where the grasping serrations of the aide ace cut, the full auto {Bun closely resembles the earlier Mocel 17 ‘The large-diameter fireselectne pin that connects with the slide acts as the tripping shoulder to the sear when the selecor is set at full auto. The camming shoulder of the pin depresses the sear just before the side reaches its full forward recoil releasing the stsiker to fre the gun. In ‘compact versions, the following miniguns are also offered with port fed barrels and frame rails: Model G-19 (mm), Model G-23 (40 SEW), and Model G32 (357 SIC), Firing these miniscule semis in fullauto mode is quite an experience. But remember, never attempt to fice a long burst, especially with these miniguns, until you have mastered shooting them with total contol in full auto. If you lose control ofthe weapon while firing, it will become a runaway gun and may pose a danger (0 you and those around you, Practice quick release ofthe trigger pullin case you lose control of the aun while fir ing. Always practice with the minimum amount of ammo in the mag azine (three to five rounds) and work your way up until you have fained toxal experience in controlling the weapon in fullautomatic mode. Be a safe shooter ‘Older models that don’t use ported barrels and frame rails can be upgraded by using aftermarket barrels and sides like the Caspian Arms Hybrid system (pocted barrel with matching site) for Glocks. This can be attributed to its ult simple trigner/sear- and striker lirkape arrengement activated by a medi lumtravel trigger pull (modified double action), (The Heckler & Koch ‘YP-70 machine pistol operates in the same system, with a straight but longer tigeer pull) “the Glock has a pivoting trigger that operates on a three-stage pull principle that its inventor calls the ‘Safe Action’ system, The first siage Of the pall deactivates the builtin trigger safety—this small protruding piece at the front of the trigger prevents trigzet tovement unt i is intentionally squeezed to fire the aun. Tre second part of the trigger pull (halfway) pushes the spring-loaded firing pin safety upward to clear the pathway forthe stilker soit can fly Forward to fire the gun ence the sear is tripped. The third and final stage of the trigger pull is the actual disengagement of the sear and striker Unique in the Glock system is that the striker is only cocked DESIGN AND FUNCTION “Te tripping action ofthe Glock occurs each re the rodine endef the triage bar {vointd toby dele punch, top hits the disconnecing shir wf the connector ‘pointed toby cic, baton), The fsconnectiom proces betwen these te part ae nt ech laf eg po halfway each time the slide is retracted to introduce a round into the chamber: Spring fatigue is Kept to a bare minimum in this design since the spring iin the relaxed mode until the weapon is fred. In addition, the striker tel s locked in this postion nul the tigger pl reaches its second stage to deactivate the firing pin block. As the firing pin block is pushed upward to clear the pathway for the striker, the sear, which is a intewrel part ofthe trigaer bar, engages the underside lg of the srk: cer and pushes it badward as the third stage of pull starts, At the end of the pull the trigger bar is forced downward as it hits the inclined bent below the connector, thereby causing the disengagement between the sear and striker permitting the striker o fly forward to fire the gun. AAs the slide recoils after the shor, the disconnector the factory cals it the connector is depressed sideways andl to the left by the camming shoulder of the slice. This permits the sear to bounce back as the tal end of the bar bypasses the inclined bent of the connector (which fune tions as the disconnecting shoulder for the bar-at the end of the pull). ‘The serie points wo the mechanical deconmecor oF the Glock as actuated by the ‘ld caning shoulder ding rel “Te scribe point te camiming shoulder ofthe side, The se pushes the discon: ‘ecomplish the mechanical diecommertion betoen the tigger thon’ seengetgurment of tio sar and esikir eer Fall ‘As the slide accomplishes its rearward secoil, it ejvets the empty shel, On its forward recoil it introduces a Iresh cartridge to the cham her With the triager pull sil maintained after the sbot, the sear remains fully to the rear, catching the striker underlug 2s the slide returns to bat tery holding the striker wath its spring now fully compressed. Combine these features with 21st century manufacturing technology fand the end resit iso revolutionary combat handgun ideally sited for ‘gocous military applieation, Gaston Glock deserves the highest eredit in inverting this marvelous pistol. His wend-setting hand has. i 2 (ery short period, accomplished what many gun inventors of the late 20th century had only dreamed of in terms of success and fortune: ‘THE SELECTIVE-FIRE CONVERSION SYSTEM: HOW IT WORKS. ‘Over the years, Paladin Press has published some intriguing oor: ‘version manual for many popukir weapons, such as the Ruger Mini 4, Ml and Il pistols, 1022, AR7, Colt 45, HiPower, Remington 1100 shotguns, and Marlin 22 lls, for their “Exotic Weapons’ series. Most Uf these "how to” manuals are stil available from Paladin, The Glock machine pistol conversion manual is a great addition to this series because of the simplicity of the design and the minimal amount of Work involved, The conversion design cletailed in this book allows the transformation of a regular seraiauto pistol into one that delivers selec= fivefire operation ‘without altering the major components of the gun such as the receiver (frame) or side. (Even the factory has to alter is Side to mount the fire selector in the Model 18 machine pistol) It is absolutely phenomenal that such a project can be undertaken easily ising only a few (ools and tiny pieces of scrap metal thal no one would leven bother 10 look at ror amateurs working without the directions in this book, convert ing the semiauto Glock to a selective fire weapon would be a dificult task, But for experienced gun designers or inventors, solving Clock's techanical puzzle is easier than it looks. However, ii still 9 challenge to make a superb allpurpose combat handgun even better “To understand and fully appreciate the amount of tinkering that went into making the selective fre machine pistol featured inthis book You must fist understand how the newly converted weapon works Mechanically, the basic functions of the onginal components are vir ally unchanged. The few added components operate only when the ‘gin is fired in full automatic mode. SEMIAUTOMATIC MODE To shoot the pistol in semiautomatic rode, the fire selector lever at the rear ofthe slide must fist be rotated upward lil the switch ison the: downward full-auto position). Immediately after the recoil stars, the disconnector (3) is pushed to the left by the ‘camming shoulder ofthe se (not shown in the ilustration). As the dis onnector moves to the left asa result ofthe side's recoiling action, the camming shoulder of the discornector alo moves toward the lef, allowing the end tal ofthe ingger bar (15) to bounce back upward, It brings along with it the atvomatic connectur (17), which is now riding over the sear, As the automatic connector is pushed upward by the bouncing action of the wigaer bar, fis rear end tal (8) wil pivot upuvard sightly and automatically postion jtself 30 iti ready to be activated by the fireselector tipping shoulder (1). The automatic connector must remain in its normal (downward) postion tll the end of the trigger pull is reached, Pas the narrow section is an inclined shoulder. This angle core sponds with the downward action of the trigger bar as it starts its cs ‘connecting process with the connector bent. Make sure thet the incline angle has enough clearance for the sear to move freely below it so the incline angle will not interfere with the original furxtioning of the gun ‘when the wiguer is pulled from starting poine to its end of travel The next portion past the incline shoulder is wider. This section of the connector is the actual contact point that will ride over the sear each time the gun is fired and mechanically disconmects immediately after recoil Normally, the automatic connector remains in its dow \ward position until itis pushed upward by the sear bouncing after the recoil and while the tigger pull i sil in effect. With the pistol held by the shooting hand (finger of the trigger, weapon pointed in a safe ditection), the thumb of the nonshooting hand will mave the selector, pushing it to the left as far MN “The fly assombed feslator mecha szen mounted t the back of the ide The ireselector group prior ta vedi with the factory side cover plots. The heads of both rivets prevent upward movement of the lever sfier assembly. This ensures the levers rigid seating with the slide cover plate aller the riveting process: Locking the lever into position is a small spring loaded plunger powered by a Ruger 1022 rifle fring pin retrac tion spring, This ready-made spring is easily eblainable direct from Ruger or any gunsmith supplier or gun dealer seling Ruger prostucs. I you wish to buy this part from Ruger, ics part A2000. It only costs 50 cents, which isa lot cheaper and easier than irying to make one ftom scratch. Be sure to mention that is for a 1022 when ordering the part from the factory The fireselector lever is constructed from 11/64 inch thick mild steel plato, A 3/AGinchihick plate is usable, but this i the maximum thickness you could use, Preferably, the fre selector mounted at the back plate will have the least amount of bulk (o snaintain the stream lined fook of the pistol. Checkering or serrating the top hump of the lever will provide nonslip operation when moving the part from one index to the other, Checkering also enhances its aesthetics. Although it is not necessary 10 harden this part its long wearing, capability will be improved if this is done. Also, the tsipping action is smoother when hardened metal glide together, being almost fiction free. Case-hard ening is the only treatment that hardens the surface of mild steet I wil however, remain soft Inside, While mild steel will work fine for this Piece, you may build it with the stronger ofdnance steel if you choose, The left side of the lever is ciled to accommodate the spring- foaded plunger. [n addition, a small, elongated slot is cut to the top lei “THE GLOCK EXOTIC WEAPONS SYSTEM side jut above the drilled hole for the plunger. The elongated slot will permit side-to-side movement of the selector to allow it to clear the Shoulder between indexes while rotating the fire selector, “The oblong slot can be elongated using a round needle file after tiling 2 starting hole, The slot must be tong enough to permit the selector to move to the left and clear the shoulder between indexes, ‘The with of the slot must nat exceed 05 inch ofthe diameter of the pivot pin (oftside rived) to minimize vertical play, Elongate the slot Braduaily by the “fle and try" method. Do not overeut, because this ray not restrain the plunger when assembled into the Hole inside the lever Ifyou feel you are about to overcut the length of the oblong slot, you may reduce the shoulder between indexes to compensate and allow rotation of the selector. Use a termporary pivot pin while adjust the length ofthe travel slot The index notches can be cut using the same needle fe Care must be taken when cuiting the half-round index notches “These noiches must not exceed the diameter of the index pos ight side rivet) by more than 003 inch max. The extension type spring that penvers the tiger bar is connected to the housing as well as the front bent portion of the sear. A thin springike pigce of stamped sheet metal that the factory calls a connector is assembled on the right-hand side ofthe part. The top bent Part functions as the discoonector and is mechanically actuated by the stide duting recoil A second beat below the disconnector i the actual Connector. | call this second bent the disconnecting shoukler forthe tig ger bar In reality, the very few pans of the Glock pistol do multiple fare tions, so anyone can come up with his awn definitions or descriptions Looking atthe left side ofthe housing, you will notice a ewo-step slot just behind the ejector. The left arm ofthe sears inserted into this open: ing during assembly, The notch controls the fore-and-aft movement of the Sear‘rigaer ar as weil as its downward sirake at the end ofthe trig 2 pall In addition, the Jong slot aso limits the upward motion of the sear during the disconnecting process as activated by’ the slide recoil ‘The automatic connector fs mounted to the front end corner on the Fightside wall ofthe housing, To install the autematic connector on this pal, wo minor modifications willbe required. One will be an assem bly hole (5/64-inch diameter) to be drilled ta the right-side wall for the n connectors pivot pin. The other % a long narrow noteh at the front of sive housing just beside the right-side wall iself, which allows the square sacle of the auto connector to seat over it during assembly. A hack saw is all that is needed to cut the narrow notch at the front of the housing, Care must be taken when cutting the notch 50 you dont over: ‘ut, Plastic is soft and easly cut by a hacksaw; do not apply excessive pressure while cuting, Cut gently with a fine-toothed hacksaw and then tuse-a small flatfile 10 dress up the notch, IMPORTANT: The location of the hole for the automatic com nector pivot pi i eitical here, Ensue thac ts dilleé precisely as spec ified in the drawing. You only have ts drill the rightside wall of the hhousing where the new partis going to be installed. The reason the location of the hole in this partis ettical is that the protruding end of the automatic connector pivot pin restrices the forward movement of the trigger bar If you drill (he hole farther to the back, the bar will not ‘move far enoug) forward fo allow is builtin trigger safety block to pop ‘out inside the tnawer guard. If this happens, you have created an unsafe sun. The tigger safety must not be compromised, since it also controls the position of the trigger bump that activates the firing pin safety. If Your trigger is slightly in, the hump on the trigger may also be iaing up with the fring pin safety and actually pushing it up If the stitker is acei- 2 ‘THE GLOCK EXOTIC WEAPONS SYSTEM “The ame foiory pat after dhe moiestion i dane The pivot hole for she 2 matic connector i en a the rant ppermost comer of the hosing. This is critical. I you inadvertently open up the hole, the spring wil disengage itself and render che part useless. A small fla file is all you need to trim the avea in the side af the sear. If required the file marks can be smoothed simply by wrapping the same file with fine gat emery paper and going over the same area just trimmed. The purpose of cutting some metal in this area of the sear isto ere ate a small gap inside the tigger housing plate to allow the le leg of the automatic connector to seat over the front interior of the housing’ Fight wall The clearance cut will also permit the sear to move freely during operation, ‘During fiting, make sure that the frontend portion ofthe sear is not rubbing tightly against the automatic connector’s lee, There should be enough of a gap berween the two parts to allow for free movernent.
