Standard: 10.3.1.

d: Revise texts using feedback to enhance the effect on the reader and clarify the presentation of implicit or explicit
theme.
Learning Target: I can create goals for myself in order to complete tasks to the best of my ability
AND
I can complete my persuasive letter using the tools I receive in live class.
Success Criteria: Students will complete a Playlist that has each student, depending on where they are in the process of writing
their persuasive letter, complete tasks that will help them finish the letter by the end of the day so they can enjoy their Thanksgiving
break.

Materials:
Playlist and subsequent documents.
Plan:
Before Class:

Students will come in, find their seats, and begin their
gratitude journal. I will ask them to really focus on the
24 hour part of the journal, to stay present. Push
through the day and get your work done and the break
will be as relaxing as it can be with all of their family
under one roof.

Norms, habit, expectations.

Telling the students to stay present will help them focus
on the immediate, so they can focus on class and not
the five day break that comes right after.

Beginning of
Class:

8-10 minutes total: MoZ: Students will create goals

that they want to accomplish by the end of class. I will
ask them to write this on a half sheet of paper, and
make sure that they are SMART goals (we will briefly
go over what SMART goals are.) I will show the
students the Playlist for the day so they understand the
structure of what they will be completing to better set
their goals.
Students will write two SMART goals that they want to
have accomplished by the end of the class period

Having the students set goals for themselves will put

them in more of a position to self-guide through the
class period. They will be working individually and/or
with partners/small groups to complete either
workshopping, drafting, or revising their Persuasive
Letter (due at the end of the day online.)
Every single student missed one or more questions on
allusions in a quiz from a week ago. Id like for them to
go over this in a fun way, add a little bit of different
media in the classroom as well.

today (based on where they are in drafting and

completing their persuasive letter.)
5-7 minutes: Students will trade their goals with a
partner (make sure that Jade and Hope are not
partners) and their partners will assess their goals
based on the SMART chart I will put on the board.
(Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, timebased)
Kahoot quiz over allusions
Activity

Rest of Class:I will then introduce the students to the

Playlist. I will briefly go over every track on the playlist
and show the students what my expectations for class
are. I will ask for questions on the playlist and once all
of them are answered, break the room into the different
tracks so students can be by people who are doing the
same thing as them.

Its been a while since weve devoted a full class to a

playlist, so I want to set expectations and norms so the
students know what they should be doing the entire
class period.

The Playlist:

Track 1: I need to start or finish my first draft.

Students in this track could be anywhere from not
having an idea (Tryan, Hope and Harrison were the
only students to not turn in their outline. Harrison has
been contacting me with ideas, however.)
Track 2: I need to workshop with my peers.
Start off with two questions they want answered during
the workshop. What do they specifically want their
peers to be looking for? (Hint: Is this good? is not a
good question.)
Track 3: I need to revise my letter.
Track 4: I am completely finished with my letter and
know for a fact that I will earn an A and need to make
sure that Im well prepared to go on a well-deserved
Thanksgiving break.
During this time, I will have mini pull out conferences
with the students. I will ask them 1) what their goals
are, 2) their progress on their goals/what track they are

Although I made it my expectation that the students

come to live class with a draft of their letter, I know that
there will be students who have not even started.
Some students may want/need to workshop in order to
revise their drafts, while others may want to spend their
time revising. It will depend on the goals that they set
during their moment of zen.
I dont expect any student (except maybe Jayde Green
and maybe Courtney Norris) to reach track 4. Jayde
has sent me her draft already on Monday morning for
feedback, so she may be slightly ahead of the game.

working on, and 3) what they need from me this hour.

I will let the students know this is what I will ask them
when we meet so they can feel prepared.
Closure:

Be sure to stop students with two minutes left in

class so they have time to self-assesss: Students
will grade themselves (out of 5) on how they believe
they did on accomplishing their goals. They will leave
that half sheet with me.

Self-reflection and goal-grading is good for this class.

Having two concrete things they need to accomplish
will help them out tremendously.

Feedback
Solid lesson. Good scaffolding, strong mini lesson to clarify a concept. Added challenge: could have tried to have kids include an
allusion in their letter (bonus points?)
>Great opportunity to conference with each kiddo. Felt like an ordinary day in a smooth classroom. How did you choose what order
to meet with kids? Try to grab your most-at need students first.
>What will motivate kiddos to keep working through the hour?
>How will they earn point for today?
>Nice, clear, succinct feedback to kids. Really important when delivering instructions.
>Maybe good to pause during conferences and check in with any kiddos. Looks like Tryan is doodling?
>How do you determine seating in class? All choice = nice and flexible. There can be some rational to grouping kiddos based on
track (peer review, drafting, revising, etc). That way you can quickly look around the room and check in.
>Kids started packing up at 12:26
>Pacman screens, finish up what youre working on - slightly contradicting
>TOTD - always good to get one final question from kids -- where are you stuck? What is one question you have for me? What do
you need to do your best work on this?
