Lesson Plan Pro-forma

Lesson Topic: Area

Class: 8e/Ma
Date: 8/11/16

Area of Programme of Study or

Subject Specification Addressed:
Mathematics. Specifically Geometry in
relation to area of two-dimensional shapes

Room: 6
Period/Time:
2/09:30

Learning Intentions:
Find the area of shapes by counting squares where answers are: an exact
number of squares;
whole and half squares;
whole and part squares.

Skills and capabilities

to be developed:
Students can identify area
based on smaller squares
within a geometric shapes

Success Criteria:
Students must be able to count the number of
squares in a shape in order to determine the area of
the shape

Through using non-standard units, appreciate the need for a standard unit of area.
Find the area of irregular shapes in cm^2 by counting whole, half and part squares

Learning Sequence/Teaching Activities

Stage
Introduction
Time: 10 -15
mins

Teaching Points / Key

Questions
How can you determine
the size of the shape

Teacher / Pupil Activities

Assessment/Verification
of learning intentions

Hook:
-

Have students either work individually or partners

to create shapes out of square pieces of paper

Students share what they

found in creating their

that you created?
How do the shapes on
the grid paper relate to
the shapes you created?

Use the squares to make a variety of shapes or

designs
- Students should work together to measure the
space inside the shape they have created
- Allow enough time to have students create at
least two shapes
- Have students share out the area measures they
found
Mini-lesson
- Introduce area through the PowerPoint
presentation
o Discuss what area is
o Discuss how area is measured
o Work through 2 full square diagrams
o Work through 2 half square diagrams

shapes. I will walk around

the class in order to
formatively assess
student learning.

Development
Time: 15-20
mins

Students finding the area

of two-dimensional shapes
based on squares within
the shapes
What do the interior
squares of a shape tell us
about the shape?

Conclusion
Time: 10 mins

How do the measures of

length and breadth
relate to the area of the
shape?
Determine whether
students feel
comfortable with the
content presented in the

Independent Work
- Students work through the first worksheet of 9
grid designs
- Students should provide their answers on the
worksheets
- I will mark their worksheets as they complete
them, but will probably not get to them all
- We will complete marking the worksheets as a
whole class
- Students will then move on to the second
worksheet of 9 grid designs. This worksheet will
have some half filled squares.
- The class will work through this worksheet in the
same way as the first. We will mark them in the
same way as well.
For students who finish more quickly than others:
- There will be an additional worksheet with grid
paper for students to complete if they finish early
- The students will use the grid paper to draw out
the letters of their names
- The students will then take those drawings to
determine the area of their names
- All students will complete this worksheet if time
allows in class
Lead into the next lesson:
- Discuss with students how the total area of the
shapes based on the squares relates to the
measure of the width and breadth of squares or
rectangles.
- Use the PowerPoint slide to project a rectangle
with squares. Use this picture to discuss the
relationship between squares within a shape and
side lengths
Exit Tickets

These worksheets will

be turned in at the end
of class. These
worksheets will be an
assessment of students
learning in relation to
area.

The exit ticket will be

turned in before the
end of class. Students
can either put their
names on the post-it or
leave it anonymous.
This slip will act as an
assessment that will

lesson. This information

will help determine what
is covered in the next
lesson.

Resources

Use a post-it note for students to write down two

questions
o What is one thing you feel good about
following this lesson?
o What is one thing you do not understand
about this lesson?
