Independent Work
- Students work through the first worksheet of 9
grid designs
- Students should provide their answers on the
worksheets
- I will mark their worksheets as they complete
them, but will probably not get to them all
- We will complete marking the worksheets as a
whole class
- Students will then move on to the second
worksheet of 9 grid designs. This worksheet will
have some half filled squares.
- The class will work through this worksheet in the
same way as the first. We will mark them in the
same way as well.
For students who finish more quickly than others:
- There will be an additional worksheet with grid
paper for students to complete if they finish early
- The students will use the grid paper to draw out
the letters of their names
- The students will then take those drawings to
determine the area of their names
- All students will complete this worksheet if time
allows in class
Lead into the next lesson:
- Discuss with students how the total area of the
shapes based on the squares relates to the
measure of the width and breadth of squares or
rectangles.
- Use the PowerPoint slide to project a rectangle
with squares. Use this picture to discuss the
relationship between squares within a shape and
side lengths
