Procter and Gamble Business Profile
Touching Lives, Improving Lives. Procter and Gamble (P&G) was founded in 1837 by
William Procter and James Gamble as a soap company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Their primary
product at the time was Ivory soap. In 1911, the company began to diversify and started to sell
Crisco shortening. 178 years later, they are one of the largest consumer goods corporations in the
world. Their products are split into 4 primary corporate functions: Beauty, Hair & Personal Care,
Baby, Feminine, & Family Care, Fabric & Home Care, and Health & Grooming. Their 2016 net
sales are 65.3 billion dollars. Being a Cincinnati-based company, P&G is a major partner with
the University of Cincinnati. The Carl H. Lindner College of Business utilizes the PACE
curriculum to ensure the future success of their students. PACE stands for Professionalism,
Academics, Characters, and Engagement. The pillars of PACE can be clearly seen within Proctor
and Gamble.
Procter and Gamble uses professionalism throughout their company. They're known for
being a trustworthy brand and making their consumers lives a little easier with their products.
On the P&G website they have a link for their professionalism and describe what they see in
each one of their workers. Throughout the whole company they have 127,000 employees in 80
countries; each worker is expected to perform well. P&G provides internships and co-ops for
college students because they want it to be a learning experience to see how a company may be
run.

When recruiting, they look for each potential employee to reach their greatest talents.
Their motto when hiring is, we hire a person, not a position. P&G wants to focus on the special
characteristics and unique qualities of each individual worker. After being hired, they expect you
to express your top talents and blend those with other employees who have different top talents
to create an efficient work environment. While working with others, Procter and Gamble expects
you to relate with one another, compare ideas, and connect with other employees when taking on
a task. P&G desires dissimilar groups to meet up to bring out everyones creativity. The company
is establishing a diverse mix of people. P&G is familiar with being efficient and bringing out
new ideas from their worker. They want you to reach your full potential while increasing the
companys growth. Procter and Gamble is known for only using top ingredients, trusted by
moms, creating a clean surrounding and being known for having a professional work
environment. They are dynamic, innovative, and collaborative. P&Gs goal is to hire the best
people to help move the business further in the market by knowing what consumers are looking
for.
Procter and Gamble ranks very high when it comes to education. Their focus on
academics within their company is a perfect lead example for other companies to follow. The
three things that really set Proctor and Gamble apart from other companies are their coops/internships, development programs, and their abundance of scholarship opportunities.
Co-ops and internships are the perfect way for young professionals to learn the way of the
company they wish to work for. They learn valuable information about the company, and also
gain experience to better set themselves apart from other applicants. P&G offer an abundance of
co-ops and internships to students all across the United States. By giving these opportunities to

young college students, they open themselves up to finding the best possible employees for the
future.
Procter and Gamble also offers an amazing opportunity to grow your skills through their
development programs. Directly through their website, you can go on and sign up for a
development program that is specific to what you are studying in school. For example, if you are
studying finance in school or accounting, they have development programs that help you learn
more about your major and how it can be applied to a particular function at P&G.
The final of many different ways P&G is involved with academics is scholarships. P&G
offers an abundance of scholarships to those who are strong in their academics. Procter and
Gamble are really about their education, and with the scholarships they offer, they can help a
given amount of students obtain higher education with less of a financial burden.
All in all, P&G puts a lot of effort into finding and training the best possible employees
they can. By finding younger people interested in working with them, this allows them to work
with them early in order to have the best pool of employees within their company over the years.
And with good employees comes good work, which leads to the growth within their company,
which is ultimately the overall goal of any company.
The Lindner College of Business defines Character as having the strength and conviction
to both lead and work with teams made up of diverse social, cultural and economic viewpoints.
At Procter and Gamble, diversity and inclusion is at the core of progress and innovation. The
multibillion dollar consumer goods conglomerate has a commitment to its employees that states
Everyone valued. Everyone included. Everyone performing at their peak. P&G enables
behaviors that lead to a culture of innovation by focusing on each individuals skills and
passions. According to their Diversity and Inclusion website, they excel at diversity by

incorporating their missions in their purpose and vision for the company. By hiring a diverse
group of individuals, P&G becomes an employer of choice that hires, engages, and retains the
best talent from around the world.
In order to allow minorities to feel comfortable in the company, P&G has a variety of
employee groups and organizations so these personnel can have a sense of community. These
employee groups include: Asian Pacific American Leadership Team, African Ancestry
Leadership Network, Hispanic Leadership Team, People with Disabilities, and more. In addition,
P&Gs non-discrimination policy ensures all employees, regardless of race, color, gender, age,
national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status,
citizenship, disability, veteran status, HIV/AIDS status, or any other legally protected factor, are
treated fairly and equally. Sophie Blum, P&Gs European Brand Manager, states that we are a
company driven by results so its very fair. You deliver results and regardless of who you are,
your background, then you progress. They know that fostering a supportive and encouraging
environment can inspire every employee to be their personal best. To win, P&G must value,
respect and include the people who make P&G possible.
While it is important to have the highest level of character in regards to a companys
employees, P&G is one of the largest worldwide consumer goods company, and therefore must
represent a diverse set of consumers. P&G serves the world, and therefore they create brands and
products to improve the lives of the worlds consumers now and in the future.
The last section in the acronym PACE is engagement. Engagement is the support, and
service or social responsibility an organization has throughout its community and areas in need.
While most organizations tend to help mainly within their community, Procter & Gamble spreads
the charitable works across the entire world. Currently, Procter & Gambles top program is the

P&G Childrens Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) program. This program gives nearly one billion
people, in seventy-five different countries around the world, access to clean drinking water by
giving out P&G Purifier of Water packets. This technology for purifying water was created by
P&G along with the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Along with this program of
global water purification, P&G is a main responder when countries are struck with cholera
outbreaks, floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters.
Another side of engagement is either service or social responsibility. Procter and Gamble
is a major supporter of social responsibility. Throughout the years, they have been working on
and implementing procedures to have a positive impact on the environment. However, these
procedures cant be completed all at once, so they have set goals and deadlines to hopefully meet
in the future. These include reducing the energy use at P&G facilities by 20% per unit of
production and reducing greenhouse emissions by 30%; both goals are set to be completed by
2020. They are also ensuring that 90% of all packaging is either recyclable or that programs are
in place to create the ability to recycle it. Also, by the year 2020, they plan to reduce water use
in each unit of production by 20% in manufacturing facilities.
Even though Procter and Gamble has a huge part in the support of global responsibility
and takes on large tasks in many other countries, they could still be doing more. P&Gs
headquarters is located in Cincinnati, Ohio, which has many areas struggling with low income
families along with drugs and violence. With the power and resources P&G has, they could most
likely be making a larger impact in their community.
In conclusion, Procter and Gamble is a company that represents the very core of the
Lindner programs PACE ideals. Their main focus is to satisfy their customers all over the world.
The company believes in the highest level of professionalism in the workplace to ensure the

Group 12 |6

productivity and efficiency of the corporation. In addition, the company also offers a variety of
opportunities to allow their employees to grow within the company. Many leadership programs
for employees allow them to build their way into managerial positions. They follow a motto of
Everyone valued. Everyone included. Everyone performing at their peak. to truly showcase
their belief in diversity and inclusion. Finally, P&G has a commitment to give back to the
community and world through a variety of sustainability efforts. Through these efforts, the
company truly represents the Lindner College of Business core values of Professionalism,
Academics, Character, and Engagement.
