What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)

Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)

Objectives- What are you

teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to
do after this lesson? Include
the ABCDs of objectives:
action, behavior, condition,
and degree of mastery, i.e.,
"C: Given a sentence written
in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able
to re-write the sentence in
future tense D: with no errors
in tense or tense contradiction
(i.e., I will see her
yesterday.)."
Note: Degree of mastery does
not need to be a percentage.)
Rationale
Address the following
questions:
Why are you teaching this

SC.1.N.1.1: Raise questions about the natural

world, investigate them in teams through free
exploration, and generate appropriate explanations
based on those explorations.

Why are materials and procedures important in a

science investigation?

Students will be able to explain what materials are and

how they are used.
Students will be able to explain what a procedure is and
why it is important to follow it by actually following a
procedure to complete an experiment.

I am teaching this objective so that students

understand how to gather all the materials and follow a
procedure in order to complete an activity.

objective?
Where does this lesson fit
within a larger plan?
Why are you teaching it
this way?
Why is it important for
students to learn this
concept?

Group Size:
Whole

Date of L

This lesson fits within the larger plan of the science

investigation process as a whole. Each day they are
learning a new process.
I am teaching the lesson this way so that students can
grasp once concept at time and see how it all fits into
the science experiment.
It is important for students to learn this concept
because they will need to know how to gather materials
and follow procedures like in following a recipe.

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Address the following:
What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?

What Content Knowledge

is necessary for a teacher
to teach this material?

What background
knowledge is necessary for

The formative evidence I will be collecting during this

lesson would be a worksheet that has you list the
materials from the experiment. Under the materials
section there is also a procedure section and it lists First
I, Next I, and Then I; students will fill out what they did
in steps.
The summative evidence I will be collecting would be
my pre-assessment that I gave at the beginning of the
lesson. It is a worksheet that students are cutting out
materials and procedures and gluing it in the correct
column and then writing the definition of a conclusion.

The content knowledge that is necessary to teach the

material would be knowing what the definition of
procedures and materials are and why they would be
important in an investigation. Materials are items that
are needed in order to make something. The procedure
is the step by step process that a student would follow.
The teacher would then need to explain that the
materials are useful in order to complete the
experiment and the procedure tells you how to do the
experiment.

The background knowledge that students would need to

a student to successfully
meet these objectives?
How will you ensure
students have this
previous knowledge?
Who are your learners?
What do you know about
them?
What do you know about
their readiness for this
content?

Group Size:

know the elements of what goes into the experiment,

they may not know what they mean, but they should
know there are steps in an investigation.
I will ensure students have the previous knowledge by
asking questions such as:
What do I need in order to complete this experiment?
How do I know what to do?
My learners would be my first grade students.
I know they enjoy doing science experiments; I just
want them to know what the purpose of the
experiments is.
I know they have done experiments in the past and I
think they will do well with the new vocabulary based
on their past experiences with science investigations.

What misconceptions
might students have about
this content?

Misconceptions students may have about this content

would be getting confused about vocabulary. They will
have to know what the word material and procedure
means.

Lesson Implementation
Teaching Methods
(What teaching method(s) will
you use during this lesson?
Examples include guided
release, 5 Es, direct
instruction, lecture,
demonstration, partner word,
etc.)

Introduce Science by explaining

that we are going to be learning
about materials and procedures
today. Transition the students by
having them sit on the carpet
facing the rocking chair. Say
Bodies up, Chairs in, 1,2,3
students will say break and walk
to the carpet.
Engage: Read the story The Little
Red Hen
Once the story is finished, have
students return to their seats and
remind them that before an
experiment we want to make our
hypothesis. Have them write how
many pennies they think will fit in
the cup of water on a sticky note.
Relate the ingredients in the red
hen book to materials. Based on
their pre-assessment many of the
students realized that the
materials were items needed to do
the experiment. Relate the
materials to ingredients and the
procedures to the directions
Explore: Once they have finished
their hypothesis they will actually
get to test out their hypothesis.
Each table group will have their
own cup of water and pennies to
test out their experiment. They will
have a specific procedure they
need to follow.

Step 1: Fill cup up with water

Step 2: Put pennies in until the
water overflows
Step 3: Count pennies
Emphasize that the procedures are
step by step directions.
They will then write their actual
number of pennies on the other
side of the sticky note.
Explain: Bring the group back
together and discuss their results. I
will then ask students what
materials we used during this
assignment?
Have them turn and talk to their
shoulder partner about what would
happen if you didnt have the right
materials?
I would then go into asking about
the procedure or the step by step
process they did in the
experiment, I would ask the
question what was the procedure
for this experiement?
Have them turn and talk to their
partner about what would happen
if we didnt have a procedure.
Show the brainpop video on
science investigation that better
explains materials and procedures.
Elaborate: Have students write
out the materials needed in order
to make a peanut butter and jelly
sandwich and have them write out
the procedure for it.
Evaluate: Have students fill out
the materials and procedure
portion of the planning worksheet

for the experiment we did today.

Conclude the lesson by asking
what are materials and why are
them important?
Along with asking what is
procedure and why is that
important?
Have students put their sticky note
in the back of their bee book and
their assessment sheet in a pile on
their table, collect it for the
conclusion portion for tomorrow.
What will you do if

a student struggles with the content?

If a student struggles with the content I will pull
them into a small group and talk about
procedures in their real world like their morning
routine or lining up for lunch. If they struggle
with materials I would have them think about the
materials they need in order to finish their work,
like a pencil, paper, glue, scissors.

What will you do if

a student masters the content quickly?

I would have students write their own procedure
for brushing their teeth and the materials needed
in order to complete the job.

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the

interests and cultural backgrounds of your
students?
This lesson connects to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of my students because they will
learn how to read materials and follow a
procedure to be able to follow recipes that could
be passed down through their family.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect

to/reflect the local community?
This lesson connects to reflect the local
community by learning everyday procedures
whether it be the laws, rules, or just a procedure
on how to act in a grocery store.

How will you differentiate instruction for students

who need additional challenge during this lesson
(enrichment)?
L.D. I will pair her with someone who is higher so
they can help her with reading the material.
L.B. I will allow her to work with someone to help
her with her spelling.
E.H I will allow him to work with someone to help
with reading and provide pictures.

How will you differentiate instruction for students

who need additional language support?
I will differentiate instruction for students who
need additional language support by supplying
pictures along with words so she can look at it
and know what it is.
Accommodations (If
needed)
(What students need specific
accommodation? List
individual students (initials),
and then explain the
accommodation(s) you will
implement for these unique
learners.)

The accommodations that I will provide would be

reading the directions of the experiment out loud to the
entire class.

Materials
(What materials will you use?
Why did you choose these
materials? Include any
resources you used. This can

The Red Hen book

Pennys
