Student Name: Benjamin David Hall

Date: December 2, 2016
Standard One:
1/21 - ARD Meeting (1): While Ive been in many meetings like this the structure is much more
strict at PHS, and Im having to think about what my role might be as principal
1/22 - ARD Meeting (1): The two principals Ive worked with have very different styles! This
one was different because it was done over the phone. Facial expressions and hand motions
abound.
4/18 - Honor code committee meeting (1): Today we were able to look at an individual case of
plagiarism and help a student find a path to future success, rather than slapping on a punitive
punishment. Assuming he keeps his end of the bargain (re: authentic work), he'll be just fine and
hopefully learn something from the situation.
10/31 Student academic and behavioral interventions (4): Spent a significant portion of the day
speaking with students and parents about their academic and behavioral issues and how to
resolve them in a way that maximizes learning and time spent in class rather than in the
discipline system.
11/10 Discussions with students re: laptop distribution/maintenance/care (1.5): Used individual
discussions with students to highlight the positive educational effects of having and utilizing
technology in the classroom.
11/11 AP staff meeting to discuss science team instructional practices (2): Was able to be a fly on
the wall for this AP team meeting to determine appropriate actions to be taken with regards to a
specific teachers function within a department setting. Also, discussion centered around how
best to team numerous students experiencing academic and behavioral issues.
11/11 Supervision of students, staff, and parents during gift market (6): This was a long night.
Straight from the standards, I was able to monitors multiple forms of student data (teamwork,

work ethic, parental involvement, et cetera) to inform instructional and intervention decisions
and to close the achievement gap.
11/15-11/17 Region VI Jazz clinic & concert (10): These were three relatively low-key (but long)
evenings of making sure kids were in the right place, region teachers were helping the process,
and the building was secure outside the auditorium zone. It was a lot of fun!
11/18 Parent teacher conference (.5): This was a conference for one of my band students with all
his teachers. Our goal was to come up with a unified approach to communication with his
family, and to help him complete work in a timely manner.
12/1 Winter jazz concert duty (4): A great way to cap off my practicum experience. With the
students and teachers I know best putting on a great concert, this was an easy "gig." However, I
was concerned about building use on a late school night, and had to be vigilant to ensure all other
parts of the building were unoccupied and secured.

Standard Two:
1/21 - Interview with prospective tutor (.5): Very informal setting. I didnt just observe; he kind
of threw me in with the dogs with his comment, What do you think? Any other questions we
should ask? I need to develop an interview toolbox.
1/22 - Work on filling tutoring positions (1): I was tasked with finding more applicants for our
freshman math tutoring positions. Spent most time researching workings of useful college
job boards (mainly TCU).
3/22 - Observed simulated "45-minute" teacher evaluation (1): What I learned from my first
observation and the subsequent discussion? Its all about the angle. Take away judgment and
rely on data. Ask questions and let the teacher describe the lesson. Coaching mindset! Teacher
should leave conference feeling positive and as though they made and accepted their own
recommendations for improvement...
3/28 - Interviews with prospective tutors (2): It's a completely different story doing your own
interview with prospective employees! I found that I need to be much more prepared with
questions that are relevant to the process. I forgot many things I wanted to cover, and felt like I
was "winging it" a bit at the end. Need to do more research on effective interview strategies...
4/12 - Mock walk-through evaluations (1): Conducted mock walk-through mock evaluations and
discussed observations with possible feedback/solutions. Great activity that I would love to
repeat ad nauseam until I graduate.

9/13 - Filling of tutoring positions (2): Much like I did in the spring, I was able to get some
experience filling out job postings and responding to the inquiries of prospective math and
science tutors.
10/31 Walkthrough evaluations (4): Spent significant time today doing walkthrough
evaluations and accompanying reflection discussion. Nice to get some experience scripting in
the real world and gain some perspective on how the new system is working.
11/8 Monitoring of testing environment for Benchmark (4.5): Spent lots of time walking the
hallways to monitor student and teacher monitoring behaviors.
11/11 Freshman and upperclassmen lunch duty (2): This duty station was a bit different in that I
was able to spend my time discussing teacher behaviors regarding duty stations and their affect
(or lack thereof) on the schools academic culture.
11/18 Shadowing AP's during a.m. (4): I was able to shadow several AP's during their allotted
morning walk-through times gaining some valuable insight into how teams can help or hinder
the evaluation process.
11/29 T-TESS walkthrough observations (4): Spent the morning doing walkthrough observations
with my campus mentor what a great experience! It was nice to be shown what it looks and
feels like to give quick but meaningful feedback to teachers. Also nice to see several different
approaches to the process. It felt good that our opinions were similar, but it was nice to hear an
expert talk about moving forward.

Standard Three:
1/21 - Math team leadership meeting (.5): Observed principal discussing needs of the department
for an upcoming professional development day. What a great way to let departments
help determine the needs of teachers/students.
1/27 - Math team leadership meeting (1): Asked questions about the relationship between district
and campus-level professional development goals. Most waiver day info comes from the district
level but is implemented at the campus level.
1/29 - Golf cart duty supervised by Dr. Hall (1): Lunch duty is all about letting your presence be
known, but also about developing any relationship that you can. Not only do students need to
know youre there, but they need to know why you are there.
1/29 - Golf cart duty (1): As per Dr. Hall, this competency could be listed with just about any
action that I might take as an administrator. Ethical actions are a non-negotiable.

2/4 - Referral system training for tardy students/lunch detention (.5): We were explained how the
new systems in place for tracking tardy students and lunch detentions will work. The school is
totally backed up with tardy students and the accompanying detentions, and the principal interns
are to be saddled with providing relief. I'm quite nervous to get in the discipline game. Mostly
just afraid of not having all the answers and not being able to connect with kids who are already
in trouble.
2/16 - Golf cart duty (1): I think the weather affects the moods of students, and how they interact
with one another, greatly. Its interesting to note how relaxed they are when the weather is
beautiful, and how tense everyone is when the weather doesnt cooperate.
2/18 - Golf cart duty (1): Doing the golf cart thing during lunch periods is great fun to me. Its
just a great opportunity to get to know as many kids as possible, and for them to know that
somebody is out there watching, yes, but also caring about them and enthusiastically trying to get
to know them.
2/23 - Benchmark testing duty (3): This was for the Biology I benchmark exam. I was tasked
with monitoring halls and classrooms in preparation for the "real deal" later this semester. It's
interesting what different teachers will and will not allow their students to do.
2/24 - Benchmark testing duty (4): This was for the Algebra I benchmark exam. Learning much
about the different expectations teachers have for students.
2/26 - Golf cart duty (1): Working hard as I can to develop relationships with as many different
students and student groups on campus.
3/1 - AP office discipline (2): What I'm encountering now, as I get more involved with discipline
at my school, are the same feelings I had as a beginning teacher I don't immediately know what
to do with the situations I'm facing. I don't immediately know what to say. Perspective gained...
3/3 - AP office discipline (2): Today was even more interesting! My first encounters with alleged
drug use and physical abuse/bullying. When two students arrive in the AP suite and immediately
start filling out witness statements, what do you do? Well first, make sure everyone is OK!
Always get the nurse involved. Student safety is first...always.
3/7 - AP office discipline (2): What's interesting now about my (our?) involvement in the AP
suite is that we're at the point now where "what would you like to start with" is the daily
question. That makes me feel like we're getting in to the groove!
3/8 - AP office discipline (1): Discussion is what I'm missing from these AP duty shifts. I need to
seek out more advice more "what would you have done here" opportunities.
3/10 - AP office discipline (2): Today I had to leave right as one of my internship colleagues was
able to stay to help work on a big behavior issue. It's hard letting (balancing) our teaching time
restraints get in the way of this new and interesting principalship thing.
4/8 - Softball game duty (3): Game duty at my first Paschal softball games! Attendance isn't
nearly as high as that of the baseball games, so I divided my time between the two events over
the course of the evening. Being in an open-air stadium, I feel like it would be easy for just
about anyone to sneak illegal substances into the games. It's not student or family behavior I'm
worried about, it's the stuff I can't actually see until it's probably too late!

4/22 - Golf cart duty (1): Im learning more about how to balance relationship building with
maintaining safety/order during a very hectic time of the school day. It was nice to note that
several groups of students were happy to see me again. Wondering now, is that a good or bad
thing?
9/9 - Howdy dance (4): Monitored my first ever school dance! Wow, was that interesting. No
A/C and nearly pitch black dancing conditions. Had to make it uncomfortable for a few students,
but pretty much everybody is there to have a good time. Much like I remember it, actually.
Most of the action was happening before kids entered where a few were caught under the
influence of various substances.
11/29 Office discipline (3): Spent the last part of the day calling students in to clean up the mess
that was left before the holiday break. Lots of parent contact practice this afternoon!
Standard Four:
1/29 Game duty (3.5): Dealing with crowds at sporting events is a process. Its going to take
some time to figure out exactly how to deal with people in such high-strung situations. Parents
can be more competitive than the kids as I found out at this first JV girls basketball game.
1/19 Freshman and upper-class lunch duty (2): For as many kids as we have in the cafeteria, it
surprises me there is rarely more than 2 adults supervising.
1/20 Freshman and upper-class lunch duty (2): What the administration is trying to do is keep
teachers on task during the day. I get that, but not so sure its safe for kids.
1/22 Fire drill observation (.25): Observed basic workings of fire drill execution. More detail
will be revealed with future drills. This was quick and dirty.
1/22 Freshman lunch duty (1): This was a crazy day with the rain falling outside. Kids were
much more energetic and needed constant reminders to chill.
1/28 Golf cart duty (1): Students are happier when the weather is nice. Seasonal affective
disorder may have a place in the discussion about school discipline and managing crowds in
general.
1/21 Golf cart duty (2): This is still lunch duty, but taking care to maintain security around the
building during lunch times. Freshman stay on campus and its a bit more involved that upperclass lunch when most students leave.
1/26 - Golf cart duty (1): Learning a bit more everyday about how to interact with students who
may have never seen me before. Wearing a smile and simply asking how their day is going or
what they're up to seems to be best route so far.

1/27 - Golf cart duty (1): It's great to watch Mr. Del Toro interact with students everyday. I
mentioned the fact that he speaks almost entirely in question form. It seems to get quite a bit of
information out of the students.
1/27 - Discipline rounds with Del Toro (.5): There was an incident in a classroom and we spent a
portion of the afternoon talking with individuals involved, taking/revising statements, and
making sure a student received appropriate care. There is a lot of literal leg-work that goes into
collecting all the relevant information for any discipline issue. Lesson learned.
2/3 - Assist with tardy lunch detention round-up (1.5): Got a taste of the new lunch detention
system for students who have been tardy 8+ times. The referral system and tardy systems are not
connected in any way. Must keep documentation in both. There's got to be a better way? It
does work with the scan-able ID system.
2/5 - Basketball game duty - solo (3.5): This was my first solo sporting event duty operation! It
was great/easy. JV and Varsity girls basketball teams did well. It's amazing how much you hear
when you're responsible for the entire place. But I went with what Ozuna told me in that
everything to do with the actual event is the referee's call. It's hard being a raging sports fan and
only being able to half-watch the games. My neck hurt from darting my eyes around to all the
exits, concessions, and ticket table.
2/8 - Freshman lunch duty (1): Filling in last minute for an AP when situation arises. Thinking
about how I might approach working on a team and helping my fellow administrators.
2/9 - Discipline hearing/ Assault investigation (2): Sitting in on the administration of a summary
suspension and beginnings of a subsequent assault investigation to determine whether police
should be involved.
2/10 - Discipline notifications for ID policy (1): Actually worked a few referrals for the first
time. This was a soft working with help from one of the APs, and we were really just notifying
the kids that "next time you'll be punished" and clearing the referrals from the system.
2/16 - Tardy policy lunch detention notifications (1): This is my real first foray into the discipline
realm. The interns have been asked to shoulder the burden of dealing with the new tardy system
employed by the school.
2/18 - Tardy policy lunch detention notifications (1): The schools new tardy system is flooding
the referral system. Were using a tardy system that isnt even directly linked to the referral
system... Its creating a mess, and I am doing my part to ease the stress on our referrals. Doing
our best to mitigate by not issuing referrals, but using lunch detentions instead. Well see if any
headway is made at the end of this 6-week period.

3/15 - Varsity baseball game duty (3): Each assistant principal seems to have his or her own
checklist (or not) of things to look for in any given situation. At my first Paschal baseball game,
the AP I was with was more nonchalant then I was. I feel like I was the one looking over my
shoulder. Or maybe he's just very comfortable with what he deems to be a very relaxed
environment.
4/22 - JV/V Baseball game duty (4.5): Wow. What a long set of games! That varsity game was
hard to watch at the end, but its really great to see students showcase their hard work. The
crowd is really easy going and there are many parents supporting the students at these events.
11/8 Investigation of bullying and acceptable use of technology (2): Upon hearing of a social
media incident that happened on the way to a football game, an AP and I began our investigation
by taking statements from all students involved.
11/29 Freshman lunch duty (1): My last (before graduation) lunch duty station! I really enjoy
doing this because I have such a good time getting to know the students outside my department.

Standard Five:
1/19 Textbook check-in/out and book room tour/organization (1): Got a tour of paltry book
storage, and learned how to work the electronic system.
1/20 Textbook check-in/out (2): Handled the book room by myself. Easy gig when youre not
the one in charge of maintaining organization of $1.2 million dollars worth of materials...
10/12 Freshman lunch duty (1): While creating and sustaining positive relationships with
students on lunch duty, Dr. Hall and I discussed (at great length) district and site-based policies
regarding lunch scheduling and extra-educational responsibilities of faculty/staff.
10/12 Final evaluation conference (1): In addition to continuing our discussion described above,
Dr. Hall gave me a detailed overview of my responsibilities leading up to graduation.
10/12 Homecoming dance duty (4): While maintaining relationships and order at the
homecoming dance, I spent lots of time speaking with the APs of PHS about systems currently
in place and how best to serve our students in the future.
10/31 Custodial practices refinement (1): Spent time learning how Paschal is refining the
practices and duties of the custodial staff for more efficient operation and communication.
11/1 Girls basketball game duty (4): First games of the season! Was able to go out and support
our basketball teams while helping to maintain a safe and successful environment for our
students. Several new policies to implement for on-campus athletic events, and everything went
smoothly.
11/7 District and school discipline policy discussion (2): While I also did a bit of discipline
during this period, the part that stuck with me the most is the discussion of our district and
building discipline policies/framework.

11/9 Discussions with students re: laptop distribution/maintenance/care (2): Brought students in
for discussions about why they had yet to complete laptop paperwork, and discussed all the rules
and regulations regarding the 1-to-1 program.
11/11 Discussions with students about laptop distribution/maintenance/care (3): Brought students
in for discussions about why they had yet to complete laptop paperwork, and discussed all the
rules and regulations regarding the 1-to-1 program.
11/14 Boys basketball game duty (4): What a hectic environment compared to girls basketball!
It feels like the entire process is all about reading the crowd and how everyone is interacting.
This was not a game I could just sit back and (mostly) enjoy I felt on high alert!
11/22 Boys basketball game duty (5.5): Quite the marathon of an afternoon but very quiet
because the games took place during Thanksgiving week break. A good way to make myself
more familiar with the boys basketball program culture.
11/29 Girls basketball game duty (4): The end of my last long day of practicum. What a great
way to end things getting to watch some great basketball and build relationships with parents
and the community. Lots of Panther pride tonight!
