The Personality Measuring Scale of Altruism

By Trisha Almojuela, Alyssa Co, & Lanz Deiparine
As defined in social psychology, altruism refers to an "other-oriented" motivational state or
behavior with the primary goal of increasing or benefiting another's well-being(Batson, Ahmad,
&Lishner, 2009). As a motivational state, altruism sometimes propagates prosocial, helping, or altruistic
behaviors, that focus on the welfare of other people (Burks &Youll, 2012).Altruistic behavior is a
sacrifice of ones resources for the benefit of others, representing a tradeoff between ones self-interest
and regard for others. Resources can include time (helping an elderly person cross the street, visiting a
sick relative), money (donating money to a religious organization), or flesh (donating blood, plasma or
organs) (Ben-Ner& Kramer, 2012).A person is altruistic if he is willing to bear a cost in order to benefit
the other person (Milchtaich, 2012).
The aim of this survey is to assess your level of altruistic behavior in given situations. In
connection to this, all statements below were designed and chosen to describe various situations where
altruistic behavior is being manifested. Please rate each as not at all applicable, slightly applicable,
neutral, applicable, or very applicable, depending on how you perceive yourself in that situation, by
checking the box which corresponds to your answer. Kindly respond to each question/situation honestly.
All your answers will be kept confidential.
