1. Engr. Romulo R. Agatep

Seminar Report

Former President of IECEP Inc.

PECE, APEC/ ASEAN Engineer

Principal, RA Consultant

Manarin, Kathleen Mae C.

Lecture Summary:
Engr. Agatep discussed about ASEAN (Association of
Southeast Asian Nations) engineers and the things that
ASEAN engineers do. There are list of countries around the
world who are considered as member economy of the
Engr. Agatep encouraged the ECE students to three
licensure exams. These countries compete as well as help
one another to develop global innovation and solution for
the betterment of tomorrow. Engineers work hand in hand
that is why they can work with other countries. Engr.
Agatep encouraged us, engineering students, to pursue to
take an ASEAN licensure exam because of the advantage
and opportunity that it will provide you, whether you are
inside or outside of the country.
He also differentiate APEC and ASEAN license. An
APEC engineer is a person recognized to be a professional
engineer that is within an APEC economy. These engineers
have fulfilled an authorized body in that economy, operating
in. accordance with the criteria and procedures approved
by the APEC Engineer Coordinating Committee. According
to the speaker, Philippines is one of the countries that are
included in the ASEAN, APEC, and ACP member economies.
Engineers who have these licenses are given the privilege
to work with multiple projects. He also imparts with us the
qualifications or requirements needed in order to be an
APEC and ASEAN Engineer. Some qualifications include:
(1) should be a graduate of BS in ECE and (2) should at
least two years in responsible charge of significant
engineering work. Lastly, Engr. Agatep advised us to have a
set of skills such as an ability to apply the principle of good
design into the interest of ears of manufacturing in the
industry.

Summary of Learning:
Philippines, being a third world country, have lesser
number of engineers compared to other countries. Only few
engineers in the Philippines are granted with ASEAN,
APEC, and ACP licenses. During Engr. Agateps talk, the
purpose or role of ASEAN engineers was discussed. ASEAN
Engineers collect, tabulate and disseminate information on
the education systems, engineering curriculum, recognition
of degrees and qualifications, accreditation of qualifications
and requirements for achieving professional engineer
status of each ASEAN Institutions.
He also gave guidelines or pointers on how we,
engineering students, will be able to be surpass and have
ASEAN,

APEC,

and/or

ACP

licenses.

Our

program,

Electronics Engineering, have several licensure exams,

namely ECT, ECE, PECE, and ASEAN. ASEAN is considered
as one of the highest licensure exam and is taken by
professionals who have been in the industry for a long time.
This licensure exam requires numerous qualifications. I
have learned that engineers granted with such license are
given a privilege to work with engineers that are part of the
ASEAN group over the world. It means that they can work
outside the country.
Engineers who have these licenses belong to a group
which promotes two objectives, namely: (1) to promote
goodwill and mutual understanding, and (2) to establish
and develop ASEAN baseline standard for the engineering
profession with the objective of facilitating the mobility of
the engineers within the ASEAN countries.

2. Engr. Grace B. Aguilos

Chair Education and Student Affair Committee

IECEP Inc.

Lecture Summary:
Engr. Grace Aguilos topic is focused on the goal
settings of the students. She talked about how we,
engineering students, can achieve our goals on time. She
gave tips and pointers on how we can achieve goals on the
right time. According to her, in order to accomplish these
goals, we must first know them by heart and how to set
each of those. Goal setting is an important method of:
Deciding what you want to achieve in your life. Separating
what's important from what's irrelevant, or a distraction.
Motivating yourself and building your self-confidence,
based on successful achievement of goals.
Summary of Learning
Successful business people, professional athletes, and
achievers in different aspects and fields set their goals.
Goal setting gives us a long term vision and a short term
motivation. It focuses our acquisition of knowledge, and
helps us in organizing our time and our resources. In the
said talk, I realized that in order for us to be motivated we
should know why our goal is important, why should we
achieve it, and what will be the significance if we succeed.
We can write it down on a piece of paper and place it
somewhere that we always see, such as in bed room, or in
our wallets to keep us reminded and motivated. As time
passes by, there will come a point wherein you will lose
confidence, enthusiasm, and motivation in achieving these
goals. It is natural because all of us will experience that
stage and we must surpass it. These are challenges that we
will experience and will strengthen us in achieving our set

goals. Even top-notchers of board exam use goal setting to

attain what they have right now.
We must first have a clear and definite vision of what
our goal is and why we want to achieve it. Once we
accomplished that, the odds of attaining it are reduced.
There are numerous steps and ways in order to have an
effective gal setting. Whether you follow it or not, at the
end of the day, it is still up to us on how we will achieve
these goals. Lastly, goal setting is important because it
shapes our dream. It is our first step and last step in our
journey of becoming a successful person.

Title: Broadcast Industry

The speaker also discussed the things that Electronics

Engineer and Electronics Technician do in the field of
broadcasting. The careers in the broadcast/ CATV Industry
are divided into three: for the office, for the production, and
for the transmission. Planning, training, designing, and
purchasing engineer work in the office. On the other hand,
for the production, the maintenance engineer comprises of
the technical director, video, audio, and OB Van engineer.
Lastly,

for

the

transmission,

the

telecommunications,

satellite and TOC Systems engineer are responsible for the

transmitter technicalities. The outside plant and head-end
engineer are responsible for the field service technicalities.
In line with the mentioned career above, it has its
corresponding job requirements. According to the speaker,
each engineer wanting to be in that position should qualify
with the requirements. We should have good oral and
written communication skills as well as analytical skills,
should be physically fit, and should be willing to take
calculated risk.
Lastly, the speaker gave number of benefits that we can
get if we engage in the broadcast industry.
Summary of Learning
With the abrupt change in technology, the broadcast
industry over the world faces numerous competitions from
cable, direct broadcast satellite, and internet. The Cable TV
(CATV) is one of the fast growing industries in the
Philippines. Our country having almost 150 broadcasting
organizations, comprising of radio networks and television
networks, there is no doubt that there is a fast development
of the ideas and products produced in this field of
engineering.

There

are

numerous

major

players

of

broadcast network in the industry such as ABS CBN

Development Corporation, and others.

The future development of the broadcast industry in the
Philippines is dependent on the technologies and local
production capabilities that each of the players or company
will establish. Also, it is also dependent on the identification
of right mix of program and solidifying the legal framework
of the company. The engineers in this field are the one who
are giving us endless solution and improvement in the
CATV industry.
I have learned that in this field, I can apply the
principles and theories that were discussed in the academe.
This is the real application of what we have studied and
learned for number of years.
Lastly, there are always benefits once we engage
ourselves in a specific field. In broadcast industry, these are
some of the advantages that we can have: (1) meet a lot of
people, (2) travel for free, (3) exciting job particularly in
production, (4) work with stars and celebrities, (5) company
provides assistance in dealing with government agencies,
and (6) prestige.
Title: Corporate Management

communicate with each other, whether it may be in rural or

urban areas.
Engr. Estradas talk started with his story. He is a man
with humble beginnings. He is a graduate of Electronics
Engineer and when he graduated, he worked in a photo
studio. As you can see, his work is not in lined with his
course program that is why his father got mad and told him
that he did not study for five years just to end up working in
a photo studio. Because of that, he engaged himself in the
industry, looked for telecommunication companies. As time
passed by, his skills and abilities where developed and it
helped him to get where he is right now. In Globe
Telecommunications, they work together as a team in order
to develop and improve the mobile communication system
of the Philippines.
He also discussed the working environment that they
have in the company. He handles numerous managers and
distributes tasks accordingly. The speaker also talked about
the reasons behind having poor signal strength in some
places in the country which led them in the development
and improvement of mobile services. Engr. Estrada did not
only share his experiences, but he also encouraged each
and every one of us to be interested and to love the field of
telecommunication because we are ECE students and there
will come a time that we will be the one doing his job.
Summary of Learning
The speaker, Engr. Estrada, is different from the other
speakers that conducted a talk in the convention. He did
not prepare any slides or power point presentation;
however, he shared his experiences and relates it with us.
In my opinion, I find Engr. Estradas strategy of presenting
a better one because we can relate to what he was talking
about.

Corporate management is the process of leading,

administrating and directing a company. Business tasks
often performed by corporate management might include
strategic planning, as well as managing company resources
and

applying

them

toward

attaining

the

company's

objectives. Despite the fact that he handles numerous

managers or department, he still manages to distribute
tasks accordingly. This is where corporate management
comes in. With the talk that he conducted, I learned the
value of time management and the impact that it might
have in our lives. His story only proves the well-known
quotation Experience is the best teacher. It is indeed true
because as you experience different things, your attitude
and abilities are being develop. You are being mold into a
better person and the experiences that you have will always
leave a mark in your life.
Lastly, the problems that we are experiencing in the
telecommunications industry can be solve easily if the
corporate

management

efficiently.

Handling

plans

accordingly

telecommunication

and

works

problems,

especially in large company or businesses is difficult, but if

the engineers, as well as the government work hand in
hand, these problems will have solution and can be
resolved in a short span of time.

started it with a slide Hindi lahat ng pogi naf-aartista,

yung iba ENGINEER. The audience laughed and its a
sign that the speaker caught our attention. The talk started
with defining what a forum is and giving us instructions
that has something to do with turning off our phones, and
others. He kept on giving us teasers and even gave a joke:
definition of the acronyms of different schools. For example,
MIT : Mga Inhinyerong Talentado.
After giving us a teaser, Engr. Lina introduced himself. He
came from University of the East College and he is a PECE
and an ASEAN Electronics Engineer. He owns a company,
ISDN (Integrated Systems Data Networking, Inc.) which
handles fire detection and alarm system, BGM/PA System,
Structured Cabling, LAN, CCTV, Nurse Call System, BMS
and Building Integration. He is the CEO / President of the
said company and its been in the industry for 21 years.
With the limited time that the speaker has, he imparted
with us goal setting and life time planning. He compared it
with the literal things in order for us to understand it well.
He

also

discussed

to

us

the

importance

of

time

management as well as the mission and vision statement of

their company. Their mission is to bring to the marketplace
state-of-the-art technology that will serve the needs of our
clients, now and in the future. The core values of the
company are also discussed. Lastly, the speaker left us with
a piece of paper wherein we can write our plan in life. This
will serve as our check list whether we achieved our goals
or not.
Summary of Learning
Engr. Lina is a speaker who related engineering things
in real life. He easily caught our attention by saying pick up
line and jokes that are related to electronics engineering.
With his talk, I learned the essence of having plans in our
Seminar Report

life. I learned the acronym DWTOA which is related to gal

setting. DWTOA stands for Decide what you want, Write it
down, Time tables, Organize the list of plan, and take
Action on your plan immediately.

In doing things, we

should set a table in order to finish things quickly. The

number one reasons why some people get to finish things is
faster rate of time is because they are absolutely clear
about their goals and objectives. We should not be easily
distracted from others. We should always have time
management. We should write things down and set a
deadline to each and every goal that we have. In line with
setting gals, we should also have an action done in our
plan. In order to achieve any kind of success, execution is
the key to everything.
In life, I always believe that we should always aim high
and hit the market of success. Engr. Lina did not only boost
our determination, but he also strengthens our courage to
become a successful licensed electronics engineer. We
should always have faith, focus, passion, and discipline in
the things that we do. Also, we should not forget to smile
and relax because all we need is to balance our time in
order to cope with the deadlines that we set.
