Suspension lift
A power boost makes this an extraordinary
on-road performer, but the suspension is
biased towards off-road use. A +2in lift via
Terrarma springs held with heavy-duty
spring relocating plates and Fox Shocks
dampers give more under-chassis clearance,
and the KAM front axle is just gorgeous.
People are
surprised how
quick it can go:
0-60 in about 8
seconds instead
of 14.7 seconds
Hot engine
The key to the extra performance is the Turbo
Technics variable-nozzle turbo, an Allisport
intercooler and an Allisport uprated exhaust
manifold. This set-up supplies lots of cool air
to the motor at lower revs, hence the huge
torque. The IRB remap then shoves in the
right amount of fuel.

Pre-pros star at
Dunsfold Open Weekend
The weird, wonderful and the very rarely seen... a truly stunning success

private collection of
Land Rovers drew a
global audience to the
Springbok Estate near Alford,
Surrey in June.
The biennial spectacle that
is the Dunsfold Collection
Open Weekend never fails to
impress, but this years display
was outstanding even by the
organisers own high standards.
No fewer than 122 of the
collections vehicles were lined
up with military precision,
ready for inspection by the
massed ranks of enthusiasts.
As if that wasnt enough to
please everyone, there were
more than 20 other Land Rover
club displays packed with more
interesting and/or rare Land
Rovers to ogle, including the
Series I 88-inch belonging to
LROs Mark Saville on the Land
Rover Series One Club stand.
The centrepiece of the
weekend was the gleaming
line-up of pre-production 80in
machines. Never before have
13 (14 if you include the rolling
chassis) pre-pro Series I Land
Rovers been assembled in one
place, not even in the factory

The engine is epic, and at
17.5mpg it drinks about as much
as an old Rover V8. Thats quite a
thirst, but considering
the nature of the beast, its

borderline acceptable.

mouthful, but its a milestone
to be proud of in the nal year
of Defender production at the
original Land Rover factory.
Every one of those two million vehicles,
from pre-production Land Rover No 1,
HUE 166, to this unique Defender 90 station
wagon registered S90 HUE for Solihull,
90 and, well, you can guess the rest has
travelled broadly the same journey, and been
built in a similar way, on the same part of the
West Midlands site, for almost 68 years.

THE BUILD
Would you like to help build Solihulls twomillionth Land Rover Defender? Its a call I
never expected to take (not least because we
thought theyd done that two years ago), and
one with a very short, and immediate answer.
Trivial matters like sending LRO to the printers
on a sunny Friday would have to wait.
Being a special build, this Defenders journey
down the production line was more drawnout than most. It was officially born on May
21, the day before my rendezvous with it, but
by the time I caught up with the Defender
2,000,000 at Lode Lane there were still a few
important jobs left to do

Large potholes encourage all the vehicles
suspension to ex noticeably and the tyres
scrabble up the sharp edges.
Weve a bit of drive to the next lane
and follow the A591 between Skiddaw,
Englands fourth highest mountain, and
Bassenthwaite Lake to Keswick.
Opting to avoid traffic in the town, we
follow the bypass and continue on the A591
south to Dale Bottom. We can actually see
our next greenlane zig-zagging its dusty
way up the hillside a mile before reaching it,

We reach the gate at the same time as a
family of cyclists. They offer to shut the gate
for us, so we continue up the rocky hill, with
more zig-zags making the climb more vehiclefriendly. Suggestions have been made that the
name Old Coach Road may be a misnomer
that the coaches would have taken a different
route. And it would certainly make more sense
for coaches to follow the less steep route in
the valley that the A66 currently runs along,
but that depends on how soft the ground
is in the valley many ridgeway routes exist
because the ground is rmer. And, initial climb
aside, the route is fairly at.
The other point against it being a coach
road is the ground conditions. While it is
certainly stony most of the way, water running
along it has caused a signicant amount of
erosion. The Discos axles twist as they cross

Since 48-year-old civil
servant Phil was in his early
thirties he has spent most of
his holidays discovering the
Maghreb in North Africa.
Creating this lightweight
110 camper took three
years, but he now uses it for everything from driving to
work in Yorkshire to crossing the Sahara. His Land Rover
passion started with a Range Rover Vogue SE, followed
by a 165bhp 3.5-litre ex-Rover SD1 V8-powered Ninety. A
more docile 300Tdi Defender 90 County hardtop replaced
that, followed by a brace of Td5 Defenders.

work can be a better buy.
So, when I bought my tatty
Lightweight last year I was
under no illusion that it would
be trouble-free. In fact, the
rst thing I did when I bought
it was make a list of everything
Having to blag a
tow-start from a
passing Vauxhall
Corsa driver was
just a little
embarrassing
When I removed the front
pulley it was obvious why it
was leaking the seal surface
was badly scored, rendering
it useless. Fortunately, Ive a
couple of spare engines, so one
of those relinquished a pulley in
considerably better condition,
allowing me to put it back
together, just in time to head
down to the Drive-in Heritage
day at Eastnor Castle.
Apart from a couple of
greenlaning trips, Id only really
been pootling round since I
bought it and the 250-mile
round trip would allow me to
check the Lightweight properly.

Before
wheel wobble on
my Defender TDCi
needed investigation.
The likely cause was
obvious and gleefully accepted:
the 265/75 R16 BF Goodrich
All-Terrains were cracked and
bulging, thus finally done for.
Why would anyone be pleased
that 700 worth of tyres were
now defunct? Well, the fat ATs
that I initially fitted to my 300Tdi
Defender, Naomi, in 1997 were a
mistake. The steering was like the
Titanics and the tread instantly
filled up with mud off-tarmac.
But I felt obliged to get my
moneys worth out of them. They
were soon demoted to summer
footwear for 30,000 miles. In
2007 I bought Denzel, the TDCi,
as a tow vehicle and fitted the
ATs to refurbished wheels where
they survived 55,000 miles.
On discovering their demise my
plan was to fit a more practical
235 replacement, but I slapped
on a set of 205/80 R16 Michelin
4x4s as a temporary measure to
get straight back on the road.
Well, not quite straight back.
On removing the rear wheels it
was clear the brake pads were
also past their sell-by-date. New

ones arrived the next day, but the
wrinkly metal spring clips werent
included a must-have as the old
ones had disintegrated.
Two days later I got Denzel back
to work on the 205s it drove so
much better. Doing the maths, I
had lowered the overall gearing
by about nine per cent. First gear
is redundant except for hill starts
and pulling off with a big trailer.
Second-to-sixth feels closer to
first-to-fifth on my 300Tdi, and
acceleration is vastly improved.
Clearly these would not be the
best option off-tarmac as Ive lost
37mm of ground clearance, but
for towing and road use theyre
perfect, with the bonus of much
less drivetrain wear due to the
reduced unsprung mass. But I
have to give full credit to the ATs;
85,000 miles over 18 years with
5mm of tread left is amazing!

Freelander 2 I looked at
and test drove lots of
4x4s. I decided on a Freelander
2 due to economy, reliability, its
performance on and off-road...
and my wife saying yes! I was
also impressed that the SD4s
0-60mph time was 10.5 seconds,
so not too bad for a 4x4.
I use the Freelander for my
everyday transport, pay-andplay, and greenlaning. Its a great
off-road vehicle and never runs
out of grunt. The traction control
is excellent and certainly helps
when in the mud.
Like any 4x4 that is pushed
hard, it will get stuck, as Ive
found out for myself but in
my experience the Freelander is
truly a wolf in sheeps clothing!
Its a great feeling when other
4x4 owners are expecting me to
get thoroughly stuck and the car
rises to the challenge.

May as well get all the wee and poo stuff over
in one issue
I hate road salt, so my Freelander 2 spent the
winter laid up at a caravan park. But cars dont
like standing around, so I kept the battery
connected and visited once a week to give it a
drive, polish surface rust off the brakes, charge
the battery and make sure everything was
working. And clean off the starling poo.
Theres a big wood near the caravan park,
where starlings head at dusk usually a ock
of about 100. Then a bigger ock appears,
then a couple more, then they all combine
into one huge swarm. Its a fantastic, jawdropping spectacle. Id stand there looking
upwards then remember about the bird poo,
quickly shut my mouth and duck under the
Freelanders back door! Every time I visited,
starling poo was everywhere until about the
end of March, when it stopped. Before: always
starling poo. After: no starling poo at all.
So, what is it with starlings? Is starling poo
seasonal? Some LRO reader must know,

surely? Do let me know.

Misplaced confidence
Feeling massively condent with my state-ofthe-art off-roader and nave in the extreme,
the good mate who had volunteered to be
winch-man and I thought ourselves to be an
unstoppable team. Full of misplaced
condence, we entered the next event that
was near enough to get to without resorting
to a trailer which happened to be the
Ultimate Challenge event.

bit sorry for us
Jerry Thurston presented Salvage Squad in 2002-03, now on Quest! Hes now a writer and show compere, still squeezing in

THE RADIOS
By the mid-1950s, parts of the British Army were
using radios that would later make up the Larkspur
system. They were issued to Royal Armoured Corps
and Royal Artillery units; then, from 1962, the system
was rolled out across the rest of the Army under
Project Larkspur. Our 109 carries a Pye C12 or C13
set, an R209 receiver in the centre, and others we
cant identify but there will be a reader who can!
He sent me a
couple of pictures
and gave me the
chassis number.
This was the real
deal, all right!
feature I could nd was a pair of freewheeling
front hubs and even those were the rare
Dualmatic type!

The commander
would no doubt
have been either
in the vehicle or
in a nearby tent
or awning
heavy-duty towing and on this vehicle it
carries not only a tow hitch but also a pair of
lashing eyes for good measure.
Civilian-pattern station wagons also had a
rear-mounted 16-gallon fuel tank, but the
Army asked for twin 10-gallon underseat
tanks with a changeover switch.
As a result, theres a blanking panel
riveted over the rear ller aperture, and
a neat little changeover switch in the middle
of the dash, with an engraved brass plate
acting as a label. Under the bonnet are
two electric fuel pumps, another
non-standard feature.
Lighting arrangements are special too. The
FV-pattern headlamps are no surprise, but
these station wagons must have been among
the rst vehicles to have the front sidelights
and turn signals stacked vertically a militaryonly arrangement that allowed room for a

It really is astonishing just how much you can find
out about a vehicle if you track down and look
through surviving records.
25 CL 74 is on chassis number 1619-00040,
which makes it the 40th 1959-season 109 station
wagon for the home market. In fact, there were
only 106 of them! According to the despatch
records at the Heritage Motor Centre, it was built
on April 27 1959 but did not leave Solihull for the
Central Army Vehicle Depot at Ashchurch in
Gloucestershire until July 20.
The Army records show it as receipted in at
Ashchurch on July 30. It served until February 14
1962, when it was struck off (formally withdrawn)
at Ruddington.

Phil Webber recently picked
up an interesting item of
Land Rover memorabilia, and

about it. Well, I think I do
but annoyingly I cant pin it
down the way Id like to. So I
wonder if you can help...
A label on Phils nd calls
it an LR-1 Deluxe Portable
Integrated CD Radio Cassette
Recorder, which says all you
need to know. Another label
on it has a December 1999
date, although I cant work
out the country of origin from
the pictures Phil sent. Im in
no doubt that its a genuine
Land Rover accessory, as
the box carries authentic
markings in the style favoured
at the time.
Im sure I have seen one of
these, and I think that was
in the early 2000s during a
visit to the old Land Rover
Collections HQ in Wallingford.
But can I nd it in any of the
catalogues of the time? No, I
cant! But Im sure somebody
out there can tell me about it.

HOW TO TAKE A
WINNING PIC!
Get a grip
Good photography is mostly about knowing where to point the camera and
how to hold it. Make sure the lens is clean and get a rm grip of the camera (or
phone). To keep it steady, lean against a tree or vehicle if you have one handy, or use
a tripod. Most photos will work better in landscape rather than portrait format.
Its not always possible to choose the perfect location but, if possible, try to get
the sun behind you. However well composed the shot is, a blazing sun
streaming into the camera or blotches from Newton Rings will almost certainly
ruin the shot. Avoid telegraph poles growing out of the roof, too!
There are odd occasions when just a part of a vehicle makes a good photo;
when we are showing details in a story about a vehicle, or a wheel spinning in
a trial, but in general wed much rather see all of it just like you would try to get
your grandmothers hat in a family shoot. Take your time to get it right.
In the best photos the subject isnt usually in the centre of the shot, it will be
offset a bit, most commonly horizontally. This is known as the rule of thirds:
imagine a grid breaking the scene into nine rectangles, centre your subject on one of
the grid lines and let the scenery ll the rest.
Move around the vehicle for different views and/or move the vehicle. It looks
much better if we can see two sides of your Land Rover, and try getting a shot
from low down too. It is often difficult to see how good a photo is on the little screen
on the back of your camera, so take a few of each shot one could be a winner! LRO

The masterplan
Editor-in-chief John Pearson bought this 2002
Discovery 2 Td5 as an everyday vehicle, freeing
up his ex-G4 Challenge Defender for adventures.
The Disco came with a service history and a wad
of dealer invoices detailing past repairs. Its
sound, yet inevitably there are jobs that need
doing. Britparts Steve Grant gave it a going-over,
looking for faults and now were xing them. Last
issue we cured an engine oil leak, replaced the
rear suspension bump stops and Watts linkage.

I have a late 1953 Series I
80-inch. The bottom hose
has a connection, an outlet
for a smaller rubber pipe that
connects to a copper heater pipe
across the top of the engine. It
works, but looks like a lash-up.
However, the rest of the vehicle is
very genuine. Could it be correct?

was a lash-up. But I stand
corrected by my friend
Heath Smith who has just such a
thing on a very original 1953
80-inch in his yard at the moment.
Just one parts catalogue gives a clue
though the accompanying drawing
only shows the usual curved metal pipe
including outlet (part number 231832)
between radiator bottom hose and
water pump.
However, the parts listing has different
items for tting a heater to vehicles after
36100134. This appears only in the March
1953 Parts Catalogue. By the July 1953
Parts Catalogue (86- and 107-inch) the
usual 231832 metal pipe is back again.

You mention the vehicle has recently had a clutch replacement was
the spigot bush and/or ywheel also replaced? Commonly, noises can
originate from an excessively worn ywheel or spigot bush, or the clutch
release bearing if the slave cylinder is dragging. Its difficult to know where the
noise is coming from without hearing it, but I suggest you also inspect the
crankshaft torsional vibration damper and universal joints. David Long

The Defender SVX was unveiled in
November 2007 to celebrate Land Rovers
60th anniversary. The limited-edition
Defender, based on the 1999 SVX concept,
was a hit but delays in production meant
that deliveries to customers werent made
for 12 months. However, nowadays it
makes for a characterful companion for a
summers worth of top-down fun
whatever terrain you use it on.

MW was already
imagining the future of
the Defender in 1999
when it unveiled an SVX
concept at the Frankfurt motor
show. The concept wasnt dissimilar
to the vehicle that Land Rover
launched to celebrate its 60th
anniversary in 2007.
Two hundred SVXs were made:
140 soft tops and 60 station
wagons. Despite the exclusivity of
the station wagon, its the soft top
that remains the most desirable.
In fact, SVXs are more desirable
than they were new. The SVX
won a lot of fans at its launch and
initial uptake was good many
buyers sent deposits before theyd
even seen one. All that interest
didnt immediately translate into

Its a waiting game
With just 140 soft-top SVXs around, the chances of nding a selection
to choose from are slim. Getting hold of one is a case of being patient
and waiting for an example to appear on classied websites or asking a
specialist dealer to track one down that may be for sale. The SVX Owners
Club (svxclub.co.uk) is a good resource for nding a used model; and any
members looking to sell their vehicles will likely list them on here rst.

out. Check the soft top stows
properly against the B-pillars.
Make sure
that the roof folds
easily and isnt
ripped or worn
in any of
the creases
need to lower with the door switch
so check this works too.
The long production run of the
Freelander 1 means that a variety
of engines are available. The Td4
diesel is the most desirable, and
as such commands the highest
prices, while the 1.8 K-Series petrol
is the cheapest, mainly due to its
reputation for failed head gaskets.

Often called the prettiest Land Rover of them all, the Series II and IIA set the basic style of the Land Rover for the next 50 years. Its 2.25-litre petrol engine is all
but bulletproof; not that powerful but very strong. Alloy body panels survive the passage of time better than the steel bulkhead and chassis. Look out for Series IIIs
masquerading as Series IIAs to get free road tax view models with a Series III bulkhead and front wings with suspicion, though it may be legit.

Series IIIs are still relatively cheap, but really clean, unmolested examples are becoming harder to nd and dearer to buy. Many suffer from chequerplate rash and
white eight-spoke wheels. Tdi engine upgrades ruin originality but make the vehicle a great daily driver. Late-1970s examples have a reputation for rust, so are best
avoided unless theyve already had a galvanised chassis tted. Free road tax now extends to those built pre-January 1, 1974.

ANNIVERSARY PARTY

the invitation came in from their
friends in the Land Rover Owners
Club of Southern Africa, a group
from the KZN LROC were well up
for it even though it meant a
500-mile round trip to the venue
near Clocolan, about 100 miles
east of Bloemfontein. Distances
are huge in that part of the world!
The KZN LROCs Michelle Anne
De Lange takes up the story.
We set out on our trek early
on Easter Friday, having plotted
a route that avoided main roads.
That turned out to be a great
decision we enjoyed fantastic
scenery as we travelled through
the Drakensburg region, stopping
for coffee breaks and photo
opportunities. A high point of
the journey was the Golden Gate

Understanding differentials
Differentials (usually
known as diffs) allow
your wheels to turn at different speeds,
which needs to happen when you
drive round a corner. Theres one in the
front axle, one in the rear axle and, for
vehicles with permanent four-wheel
drive, a centre diff in the transfer box.
They send the most torque to the
wheel with the least grip which is
a problem off-road because its the
opposite of what you want. So most
Land Rovers with
permanent 4x4 have
a centre diff that can
be locked up.

THE PROS!

Always
engage diff
lock before an obstacle, not in
the middle of it. Its best to be
travelling slower than 15mph
when you engage it, and you
should be moving in a straight
line, without wheels spinning
when you do, or you risk
damaging the transmission.

Low range
Acting like
a second
gearbox, low range gives you
an extra set of gear ratios.
This gives better engine
braking, off-road control and
low-speed torque for pulling
big loads. Third gear in low
range is about the same as rst
in high range.
Its best to be stationary
before switching between
TRACTION CONTROL
Traction Control (TC) works
by applying the brakes to any
wheel it senses is spinning
faster than the others. Torque
then tries to nd the easiest
way through the differential,
so goes to the wheel opposite
the one that has grip, getting
you moving. Hill Descent
Control (HDC), introduced on
the Freelander 1, uses TC to
apply brakes and control your
descent down steep slopes.
CLEARANCES
TERRAIN RESPONSE
Introduced on Discovery 3,
Terrain Response offers you
automatic presets for the
throttle, brake response,
gearchange and suspension,
depending on the terrain you
want to cross.
These presets make offroading easier, but they cant
bend the laws of physics and
theres only so much they
can do if no grip or ground
clearance is available so
dont rely on them.
