Lesson Topic: Geography of Spain

Content Objectives: Upon completion of

the live lesson, students will be able to:
Identify the five principal
regions of Spain on a map provided
Determine the climate and
physical features of each region
With 90% accuracy.

Language Objectives: Upon completion of the

live lesson, the student will be able to:
Demonstrate verbally a
knowledge of the climate, food,
landmarks, and activities for one region
presented in the lesson
In an oral/informal assessment after the lesson

Learning Strategies:
-Modeling: In order to practice correct pronunciation, the teacher will use the map handout to
have the student repeat the country names based on the teacher model.
Justification: Having the student repeat the teachers pronunciation of the vocabulary
term will allow him to begin to discuss the content verbally.
- Technology based picture sort in which student identified physical geography of each region
through a picture.
Justification: Visually based activities will reinforce the audible information the student
is hearing and will serve to benefit speakers of all language proficiency levels. This is
for Review
- Use a chart as an alternative to the extension activity, which lays out much of the information
covered in the lesson and has the student identifying facts about the regions of spain.
Justification: If the student has made any mistakes in their oral presentation at the end
of the lesson, alongside addressing them, the teacher can identify any gaps in
understanding and reinforce the weak areas before the lesson is over.
- Four Corners: Each region will be broken down into a four corner layout for jotting down
ideas/notes; each will have the following labels: climate, food, famous location, past-times.
Justification: This allows the student to visually separate all of the factors that we will
be talking about. It allows to optimum organization.
Key Vocabulary:
Galicia, Basque Country, Catalonia,
Andalusia, Madrid

Materials (Including supplementary &

adapted):
Map of Spain handout, 20 Term chart
(Extension A), PowerPoint (information and
game),

Motivation: The teacher will provide the student with a list of 15 terms in order to activate the
students prior knowledge and bring up any familiarity with Spanish culture they might have.
This will serve to motivate the student in pursuing that knowledge further with a lesson on
Spanish geography. The student will have to identify the 5 terms out of 15 which are
principally Iberian Spanish, while the residual 10 terms are Hispanic in origins, but have a

stronger Latin American identity.

Presentation: The teacher will hand out to the student 5 four corners sheets that correspond
to the five principal regions of spain. The teacher will explain that each sheet has a space
provided for the students to take notes on each of the four geographic features they will be
studying: Climate, Food, Famous Landmarks, and Activities. The teacher will present each
region in a regulated method that includes introducing the features in the order described
above. The student will use colored markers to fill in each region of spain on a map provided
with the initial motivation prompt. The student will record notes from each slide in their
respective area, with the teacher regularly asking the student to confirm verbally one thing
from each slide.
Practice & Application:
At this point in time, we will have the student turn over the four corners and map.
Using a blank map with a word bank that give the student the colors to use, we will ask the
student to color in the area that corresponds to the cultural aspect of the region that we are
describing. After doing so, we will prompt the student to say the name of the region that they
colored.
Directions written out:
Please turn over your four corners activity and map (do the action as we ask the student).
Thank you, okay, so now we are going to see what you can remember about Spain using this
worksheet *gives worksheet and needed colors*. I want you to look at the directions *points
out directions.* Using the word bank provided, color in each region of Spain on the map
based on each description labeled 1-5 (point out the map part and the questions). *Reads
each question aloud to the student.* Ask her to respond to each one as we go along, then ask
her to color it in upon giving the correct answer.

By identifying and describing which region would be most desirable to live in,
utilizing an oral application. The oral explanation should include information about the
following topics covered during the presentation:
