Project 1: Multiple Typefaces

Choice of Theme
In this project, you will create a design focused around design elements, such as a
grid and typefaces/fonts. Your goal is to create a composition which showcases:
A Unified Composition Based Around a Theme of Your Choice
At Least 20 Different Spaces in your Grid
At Least 6 Different Typefaces
Strong Contrast of Positive/Negative Space in each Square
Variety of Textures/Patterns
Focal Point in the Overall Composition

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Brainstorm Your Theme
Choose your theme. Forming your ideas around this
theme can help to unify your overall design. Good
examples of a theme for this artwork could be dreams,
nature, food, science, zentangle, growing up, etc.
Step 2: Plan the Design of Your Grid
A grid is used frequently in art (specifically graphic design) to organize a pleasing
composition. You could choose a traditional square grid, or you could choose to use
circles, triangles, hexagons, etc. Include at least 20 spaces.
Step 3: Plan the Design of Your Composition
There are several examples shown in class that could give you direction. Be sure to
include the following in your composition: 6 different typefaces, strong contrast between positive/negative
space, variety of textures/patterns, and a focal point.
Step 4: Sketch and Outline Your Designs
First sketch your final composition lightly. Use rulers and stencils for your grid if needed. Then outline your
designs in thin and thick sharpie. Take time to erase away pencil. Want to add some color? Discuss your
potential idea with me before you start. You could add colored pencil, watercolor, sharpie, and the list goes on!
Step 5: Turn-In Your Project
Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit
folder on Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
