evaluatedaswellastheintroductionoftwoCanadiancompaniesthatmanufacturethenecessary

device,theadvantagesanddisadvantagesoftheproduct,willbeoutlinedincludingthecostand
shipmentdetails.

TheWindPoweredWaterpumpwillturnlikeawindmillontheupperhalf,generating
energyfromthebladesturningtodrawwaterupfromthegroundormorepracticallypumpwater
downthemountainandintothelowerlandsforcleanandfreshwateraccessinabundancy.Up
onthemountainsmanylargebodiesofwaterarefoundduetotheGlaciersmeltingandwith
greatwindgustsduetothehighelevationontheHimalayanmountaintops,thebladeswillspin
withease.Thepowerproducedbythewindturningthebladesaroundwilldrawthewaterup
fromthelakes,ponds,riversetc.andtransportitdownthemountainbyforceofgravitythrough
steelpipelinestocommunitytapsforeasyaccessbyfamilies.
ManufacturingInformationoftheProduct
ThewindmillwillbedesignedandmanufacturedbyCanadianPondsandguaranteedto
bemadeoutof100%Canadianproducts.HeritageisreallyimportanttoCanadianPondsasit
originatedfromasmallfamilybusinessinQuebecthatstrivedtopreservetheenvironmentand
wantedtominimizepollutionmakingtheearthabetterplaceforgenerationstocome(Canadian
Ponds2016).Theproductincludesthe16meterallsteeltower,2.5metrediameterblades,large

compressor,automaticoildriplubricantaswellasthewaterpumpandconnectingpieces.The
lifetimeofthisproductisguaranteed50yearswithlittletonomaintenance.
ThepipelineswillbemanufacturedbyProliteSystemsInc.atanundeterminablecostdue
tothemanyvariables.Approximately150kmofpipeswillbeneededtotransportthewaterdown
tothemountainstotheTeraiwhereitwillbeinhighdemand.Varyingterrain,slopesand
obstaclesdownthemountainarethemaincausesoftheunpredictablecosttoinstallasetof
pipelinesfromthewatersourcetothepopulation.
MachineryRequired
TobenefittheNepalesecommunityandtheireconomy,theinstallationandassemblyof
thewindmillmechanismwillbecompletedbynativecompaniestoNepal.Canadianswillbe
creatingtheinstructionmanualanddirectionsofassemblyinamultilanguagebookletfor
interpretationofbothcountriesaswellasanythirdpartythatmaybeinvolvedintheprocess.
Nepalesemenandwomenwillbepresentedwithjobopportunitiestohelpsecurethewindmill
andensureitisstructurallysoundandsturdy.HelicoptersareavailableintheHimalayan
Mountainrangesfortourismandrescuethereforenoadditionmachineryisneededtofor
transportationofthepartsanditemstomoreremotelocations.
Thepipelineinstallationwillhoweverrequirelargermoretechnicalmachineryas
trenchesneedtobedug,pipesneedtobelaiddownandconnectedandsomeinsulationis
requiredatthehigherelevations.LocatedinNepalscapital;Kathmandu,isalargeConstruction
companythathasbothsalesandservicesinthistown.KabelcoConstructionEquipmentwas
originatedoutofIndia,howeverhaveexpandedtheirmarketstothemajorityofcountriesinmid
Asia.ThisbranchofthecompanyisoperatedbytheNepaleseandwillcreatemorejobsforthem

andatthesametimeboosttheireconomybecausetheworkerswillbepaidbythecompanythat
hasitsheadquartersinIndia,creatinginternationaltradesandbonds(KCEI,2016).
MarketOpportunityandBenefitstoCanada
After2007,thesteelpipelineindustrytookalargedeficitandhasbeengraduallyworking
backtothenumberpreviouslyproduced.Asof2010Canadawasonceagainincreasingtheir
steelpipeexportswith1.3milliontonnesfrom828000tonesin2009butstillnotbacktothe
numbersof2007with2.04milliontonnes(GovernmentofCanada,2013).Bycreatinganew
marketforsteelpipelineexportsfromCanada,thesteelpipeexportmarketwillbebenefitted
withthepotentialtoexpandglobaltradeandsales(GovernmentofCanada,2014).
CanadaandNepalhaveanalreadyexistingtradeandsalesrelationship,mainlywith
CanadaaidingintheimprovementofNepaleseagriculture,thusinternimprovingtheoverall
qualityoflife.Productssuchasaviation,technologies,paper,healthcareitems,eyeglassesand
equipmentaswellascertainvegetablesandseedsareCanadianexportstoNepaltoaidinthe
povertyandmalnutrition(Anam,Rahman,1991).
Byexportingthepartsnecessarytoputtogetherthismechanism,Canadiancompanies
benefitgreatlyfromtheinternationalbusinessandtradesector.Canadiancompaniescanexpand
theirglobalcontracts.Enablingroomforgrowthandimprovement,theproductswillbringin
profitsandbyhavingothermanufacturingwarehousesacrosstheglobe,shipmentwillbemore
convenientfortheCanadiancompanies(Bailey1986).

beensteadilyincreasingaccordingtorecordsdatingbackto
1990,withacurrentpopulationofapproximately29million
peopleandnotenoughresourcesavailabletofeedthe
growingpopulationwithover2.2millionpeople

undernourished(Somsak,2016).

Thereare3majorlandregionsinNepal,eachhavingauniqueagroecology.Northern
NepalisalmostentirelypartoftheHimalayansandisthemountainousregion,withitsprime
marketbeingtourism.NepalishometomanyofthelargestmountainsincludingMountEverest,
thehighestpeakonearth(Ranaetal.2000).Belowthemountainsthereisatransitionalsection
knownasthehighlandsorhillsregion.Here,forestryisalargeindustryontheelevatedflat
lands,aswellasprimegrazinglandandpasturelandintherollinghills.TheTeraiisthesmallest
agroecologyregionandismostsuitableforgrowingcerealgrainsaswellashousingnon
pasturedanimals.
BriefDescriptionofWaterPumpsandSystemsinNepal
Nepalswatertechnologieshavepreviouslybeguntoimprovewiththeintroductionof
additionalwatertapsaroundmountainousvillagesthathaveaccesstocleanabundantwater.
Upgradingfrom4tapsper150familiestoanastonishing27allowsforcleanwatertobemore
accessibletofamilies(Adhikari,Metal.,2016).Asofnow,Nepalreliesheavilyonground
waterhoweverthatisnotrenewableduetotheunevensupplyanddemand.Asof2005,only

4.7%ofsurfaceandgroundwaterinNepalisrenewablemeaningitreplenishesatthesamerate
asitisconsumed(FoodandAgriculturalOrganizationoftheUnitedNations,2012).

LayingpipelinestorunformthefreshglacierwaterintheHimalayasdowntotheTerai
areas,theneedforgroundwaterwithdrawalwilldecreaseandallowforthegroundwaterto
replenish.Withtheadditionofalternatewaterresources,groundwatermayonceagainbea
renewablesourceinthefuture(WaterEnvironmentPartnershipinAsia[WEPA],2016)
NeedsandBenefitstoImportingNation
Throughtheextensiveinstallationprocess,manyNepalesecivilianswillhavethe
opportunitytobeemployedandassistinthelabourbehindthemechanism.Aninstallationcrew,
maintenanceteamandconstructionemployeesarenecessaryforthisproducttobeavailablein

Nepal.Throughcreatingjobsandworkopportunities,theeconomyofNepalwillbepositively
impactedandcouldpotentialhelpasectionoffamiliesgraduatefromalifeofpoverty(Lokshin
etal.,2010).Thesupplyoffreshwaterwillaidinthebettermentoftheiragriculturalindustry
duetothepotentiallyhigheryieldsandhealthieranimals.Nepalesefamilieswouldbenefitfrom
thisproductbecauseiftheinsufficientwateravailablerightnow,familieswouldfinallyhave
enoughwatertocarryoutmoresanitizationsandcleaningpractices,improvingtheoverallhealth
andwellnessofcivilians.
DuetotheunsustainablegroundwaterlevelsinNepalandthegreatdemandforirrigation
intheTerai,Nepalisnotseentohaveaneffectiveandrenewablesourceofgroundwaterasthe
12km3isingreaterdemandthansupply.Agricultureaccountsforoneofthegreatestdemandsfor
availablegroundwateras57%ofthecropsgrownintheTerairegionareirrigatedandwithgreat
demand,thedepletionofgroundwaterisevident.Thehighdemandforirrigationofcropsmakes
up98%ofwateruseinNepalalongwithlivestock,leavingonly2%ofavailablewaterfornon
agriculturalpurposes.LayingpipelinestorunformthefreshglacierwaterintheHimalayas
downtotheTeraiareas,theneedforgroundwaterwithdrawalwilldecreaseandallowforthe
groundwatertoreplenish.Byallowingthegroundwatertoreturntonaturallevelsandinthe
meantimeuseimportedwaterfromotheragroecologyregions,Nepalmaybeabletosoonhavea
reliablesourceofrenewablefreshwater(WaterEnvironmentPartnershipinAsia,2016).
Nepaldoeshoweverhavemanyenclosedbodiesofwaterinboththemountainousan
Terairegions.Largeglacierlakesinthemountainsiswhereunusedfreshwaterremainsandis
theprimetargetforthewindpoweredwaterpump.Inadditiontothe2323GlacierLakes,Nepal
isalsohometomanywateringholesforwildlife.ThemajorityofthewaterbodiesintheTerai

regionareoccupiedbynonagriculturalanimalsintheKoshiTappuWildlifeReservelocatedat
thewetlandsofBairawa(WaterEnvironmentPartnershipinAsia,2016).Thisisjustoneofthe
manyunusablebodiesofwaterthatcouldpotentiallyberedirectedtotheagriculturalindustryto
growandmaintaincropstoallowcropyieldtobouncebackfromultimatelows(Dubin&Bimb,
1990).SnowcoveredpeaksanddepositswithintheHimalayanalsostoreanabundanceoffresh
waterwithinthecountryofNepal,yetitisnotintherightstatetobeusedinwaterconsumption
byanimals,plantsorhumans(WaterEnvironmentPartnershipinAsia,2016).
TransportationLogistics
Neithercompaniesofferdirectinternationalshipment,anopportunityforapotentialthird
partycompanytostepinisavailable.BothCanadianPondsandProlitePipingwillarrange
shipmenttothecoastofNewBrunswickwhereMediterraneanShippingCompanywilltransport
theproductsacrosstheAtlanticOceantoIndiabymeansofcargofreighters.WhenSuccessfully
acrosstheocean,thecargocontainerswillbetruckedtoNepalanddistributedaccordingly.
Forsimplicityreasons,MediterraneanShippingCompanyrequiresthatyoufillacargo
containerifyouwishtoshipacrosstheocean.Pricesarealsoambiguousontheshipping
containersduetotheuncertaintyofpipelines.Foranaverage40foothighcubecontaineritis
$450forthe31daytravelfromSt.John,NewBrunswicktoMundraIndiaandthen
MediterraneanShippingCompanywithtransporttheshippingcontainerbytruckthroughIndia
toNepal(MediterraneanShippingCompany,2016).

RegionalandGlobalCompetition
Nepalsfreshwateravailabilityisanissuethatisattemptingtoberesolvedthrough
differentglobalorganizations.TheUnitedNationsareeagerlyinvestingmoneyandresources
intoNepalwiththeintentionthatwatercontaminationandavailabilityproblemsmaybesolved.
Differentfrompumpinginnewcleanwaterfromglacierdepositsandlakeathigherelevation,
theUnitedNationsworktowardspurifyingthealreadyavailablewaterintheareas(Foodand
AgriculturalOrganizationoftheUnitedNations,2012).Nepalhashadsomedevastatingwater

contaminations,includingthearsenicleakingintothegroundwater.Itwasobservedthatthe
contaminationislargelyduetotheseparationofionsinmineralscontainingarsenic.Ifthe
mineralstaysintactthannocontaminationwouldoccur,howeversincethecompoundis
hydrophilicitwilldissolveanddissociatewhenexposedtowater(Pokhrel2008).Thisprocessof
purifyingwaterandmakingmorewaterusableisnotnecessarilyacompetitiontothewind
poweredwaterpumpbutcouldserveasaparalleltoit.Onemechanismontheirownwouldnot
beabletosolveallofNepalswaterdevastations,howeverifbothworkedsimultaneously,then
thewaterqualityandabundancycouldbegreatlyimproved.
SomecompetitionintermsofproductscouldincludetheHurhureDandaAgricultural
CooperativeOrganizationfortheyareworkingtoinstallwindmillsandsmallerturbines.These
productshoweverarebuilttogenerateenergyandtransformitintoelectricitytoruninto
households.Thecompaniessupplyingthepartsnecessarytoconstructthewindmillsandturbines
maycompetewithCanadianPond,theCanadiancompanyprovidingNepalwithallparts
necessarytoinstallwindpoweredwaterpumps(Hurst,1990).Steelmanufacturesarelocated
acrosstheglobeandmanystationedoutofEuropeandAsiawouldprovidemoreeconomical
resourcesforNepaltouseforthewindpoweredwaterpump.Thelessthepartshavetotravel
beforeinstallationthelesstheywillcostandpotentiallythebettershapetheywillbein.
CriticalAnalysisandconclusion
Tomakethisstudymoreinformationalandimprovethequalityofstatistics,future
studiesneedtobedone.SpecificelevationpointsandterraindowntheHimalayanMountain
rangeneedtobeaccessiblewithouttraveltheretoenableanestimateonpriceandamountof
pipelinerequiredtotransportwaterdownthemountain.Byknowingthesefactsand

observations,amoreappropriateestimatecanbeconductedontheoverallpriceandfeesofthe
windpoweredwaterpumptoexportedtoNepal.
StudiesontechnologyinNepalwouldaidintheresearchprocessofthismechanism
becauseifalreadyexistingproductssimilararecurrentlybeingdevelopedinNepal,lessofit
mayneedtobetransportedcuttingdownoverallcostwhilestillbenefittingbothcountriesand
theireconomies.Productssuchasallofthesteelneededtoassembleboththewindmillandits
base/toweraswellastheentirepipelinewillbeexpensivetoexportduetotheirweight,soif
NepalmanufacturessteelthanitwillbemorecosteffectivefortheNepalese.
Thelargepricetagthatcomesalongwiththewindpoweredwaterpumpwellexceedsthe
incomeofcommunitiesofNepalesefarmersastheyearnroughly$1CADeachday,totallingto
under$400CADayear.TheNationalGovernmentofNepalwouldinvestmoneyintothese
technologiestoaidinbetterheathcare,lessmalnutrition,higheryields,andhealthieranimals.
Initiallyonlyonewindmillwillneedtobeinstalledandpipelinesdowntothevillagesandwater
wells/tapsintheTerai.Iftheproductprovestobeasuccessthanthereistheopportunityto
installmoreandreachfamiliesandvillagesallacrossNepal,alongwithmultiplewindmillsat
higherelevationpumpingwateroutofvariouswaterreservoirsandlakes.
