What makes a person a hero?
How do heroes react differently to obstacles they face compared to the average person?
Preassessment: Each student will have a notecard. They will buddy up with neighbors and
write down what they think of when they think of heroes.
On the same notecard, they will discuss: What do the following have in common?

Star Wars
Harry Potter
Mulan
Lord of the Rings

Lesson Objective(s): To understand the archetype of the heros journey, to identify that a
hero does not give up in the face of difficulty

All tiers will perform the Read-aloud play The Hunt for Medusa and identify the
steps in the Heros Journey
All classes will divide into groups and perform a read-aloud myth from another
culture (Native American, Norse, Asian, etc).
Tier 1 only Students will read The Twelve Labors of Hercules together and
create a poster. If support is needed, students can use the audio version of the
story that is in the literature book. The poster will be a large wheel with the steps of
a Heros Journey. Each student will do one illustration to contribute to the poster
and will put it in the correct section of the Heros Journey.

Tier 2

All tiers will perform the Read-aloud play The Hunt for Medusa and identify the
steps in the Heros Journey
All classes will divide into groups and perform a read-aloud myth from another
culture (Native American, Norse, Asian, etc)
Tier 2 Only
These students will read The Twelve Labors of Hercules and choose a movie to
compare it to. They will make a giant Venn Diagram comparing The Twelve
Labors of Hercules and a modern hero movie. They can illustrate the similarities
and differences.
OR
These students will read The Twelve Labors of Hercules and create a Venn
diagram comparing and contrasting the mythological hero with a real life hero
living today.

Tier 3

All tiers will perform the Read-aloud play The Hunt for Medusa and identify the
steps in the Heros Journey
All classes will divide into groups and perform a read-aloud myth from another
culture (Native American, Norse, Asian, etc)
Tier 3 Only
These students will write their own hero stories using the Heros Journey
archetype as a pattern for their writing. They can use the READ WRITE THINK
site as an organizer to plan their myths.

Those are a few of the illustrations the students made from The 12 Labors of Hercules

Collaborating on this lesson together was a lot of fun. We did several lessons
together throughout the mythology unit, and I think it was positive for all. It gave the
faster moving students in her class a broader conceptual framework and some more
challenging options. It gave my students a chance to collaborate and have variety and
choice. It also worked out well, because one of her students may be about to be
screened for gifted, so I am glad we worked together first.
