INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES

For the final project, students were divided into groups of ten
members and were asked to choose a topic from given options. After that,
we were to carry out the campaign and submit a report on our selected
topic. The options given were youth organisation, education, environment,
health, humanitarian, patriotism and lastly, crime and violence. We have
chosen health and the title we have selected is Eating Disorder. The main
target or audience for our project are the students and lecturers in Taylors
Lakeside Campus.
What exactly does eating disorder means? Eating disorders, also
known as a secret illness, are actually serious and can cause severe
disturbances to a persons eating behaviours. Obsessions with food, body
weight and shape may also signal an eating disorder. Eating disturbances
may include inadequate or excessive food intake which can ultimately
damage an individuals well-being. Common eating disorders include
Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-eating disorder.
Eating disorders can develop during any stage in life, but typically
appear during the teen years or young adulthood. Appropriate treatment
can be highly effectual for many of the specific types of eating disorders,
but if left untreated or unaddressed, it can lead to severe and detrimental
consequences.
Our objectives of choosing and executing this project about Eating
Disorder is to raise awareness on eating disorders among students and
lecturers, as well as educating them about the symptoms, causes, and
effects of Eating Disorders. We hope that through our campaign, they are

able to understand more about this silent illness, and are not afraid to step
forward to seek treatment in dealing with Eating Disorder.

PROJECT PREPARATION
Before the execution of our campaign, we had organized meetings
to brainstorm on ideas on how to attract audiences to our booth. Through
researches and discussion, we had decided to organize a mini game,
which is The Food Pyramid, and to conduct a survey on Eating Disorder.
Not only that, we had also came out with an idea to distribute salads to
participants who took part during our campaign and to provide them with
an easy meal plan to give them an idea on what to eat during breakfast,
lunch and dinner.

In order to help the audience gain a deeper

understanding on our topic Eating Disorder, we had also prepared an

info-graphic poster on the facts, causes, symptoms and method of
treatment. Delegation of tasks in project preparation includes preparing
the survey form and info-graphic poster, creating the meal plan, creating
the food pyramid mini game and lastly, making the salads.

PREPARATION OF APPETISING MEAL PLAN

attached at the appendices section)

DESIGNING THE INFOGRAPHIC POSTER AND PREPARATION OF

SURVEY FORM

The content of info-graphic poster includes the types of eating disorder, the
symptoms, the causes and the methods of treatment. As for the survey form,
questions are prepared and done online.

PREPARATION OF SALAD

In making the salad, ingredients such as egg, cherry tomatoes, lettuce were
prepared. Salads were handled by only one of our group member, Adele, who had
already gotten her typhoid vaccination.

MINI GAME-THE FOOD PYRAMID

Our group members drawing the food pyramid poster and cutting out the pictures
of food that are to be attached on it. The food pyramid poster is then coloured
with bright colours to make it look more attractive.

Chan Yi Fung & Lim Hong Wei.

A survey was conducted among student in the campus, to find out how much does
student actually know about the secret illness - Eating Disorder. Besides, the objective
of the survey is also to come out with a statistic between male and female among
student whos suffering from eating disorder.

We had also invited students to participate in a food pyramid board game. Where
participant are required to paste those food clip art provided into the correct food group
category. This enable participant to know more about the content and nutrition thats
contain in their daily meal.

10

Our group member explained the topic and content of this project and also
specified the objective of us choosing this topic as our project, which is to let
students know what eating disorder is and raise awareness among student on
the side effects of having eating disorder.

After student has done the survey and participated in the food pyramid board game, free
salad is given out to them. Our objective of giving out free salad to our participants is to
encourage and remind them to practice healthy eating lifestyle and do not skip their
daily meals as it would bring many negative effects to our health.

PROJECT OUTCOMES
11

A survey was conducted on 26 th October 2016 from 10am till 3pm to

27

CONCLUSION
Through this project, we are able to determine the level of
awareness between different genders among students and lecturers. From
the data collected through the survey forms, it can be concluded that
females are more acquainted with this psychological disorders as more
females are able to answer the questions prepared correctly.
There was a total of 14 questions in the survey prepared ahead
which comprise of 7 questions regarding the respondent's understanding
towards eating disorders and 7 personal questions mostly related to the
respondents eating habit. A few of our group members then wrapped up
the survey by converting the data collected into pie charts. For the first 7
questions that test on the respondents understanding, 5 out of 7
questions shown that the percentage of females getting a correct answer
is higher than males. For example, question 2 which ask for the cause of
eating disorder. 72% of females knew that eating disorder is caused by
psychological problems while 62% of males got it right. However, there are
2 questions that had shown a higher percentage of accuracy in males than
females. For instance, question 1 which states the definition of eating
disorder. 74% of males got it right whereas a lower percentage of 72%
females got it right. Generally, the first 7 questions had shown higher
accuracy percentage for both genders which indirectly proven that most of
the respondents understand the disease. Nonetheless, 2 out of 7 questions
had a lower accuracy percentage in both genders. Question 3 in particular,
only 22% of males knew that eating disorder would result in red, blotchy
28

skin and on the other hand only 18% of females got it right. But overall,
the responses were mostly accurate about eating disorder and were fair
enough to make a comparison.

Eating disorders had slowly but surely becoming a priority

mainstream health issue all around the world. The rate of eating disorders
in worldwide population is increasing. It has traditionally been regarded as
illnesses which primarily affect adolescents and in particular, young
women. However, in recent years, there is evidence which suggests that
anyone

of

any

gender

may

experience

eating

disorder.

Body

dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and adoption of socially endorsed thin

body ideal as personal standard are one of the few factors that lead to this
issue. Critical processing of cultural and media messages might contribute
to an individuals evaluation of their self-worth. Primarily young adults who
are undergoing puberty would be largely affected by those criticism. There
is no exact treatment for eating disorders as the experience of an eating
disorder is highly individual. However, early and equitable access to
treatment is the best prevention. Do not be afraid of help seeking. Young
adults should not be intimidated by peer pressure, be confident of your
natural selves as beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is not
in the face, beauty is a light in the heart.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTIONS
Adele Lu Khai Syn
(0323151)
Eating disorder has been an issue over the globe for the past few
years and is gradually increasing due to the lack of awareness being
brought up to fight against this situation. Eating disorder was chosen by
my team and I because we feel that in our university life we also tend to
fall into this situation due to assignments. Eating disorder cant be treated
lightly as it will affect our health gradually in a negative way.
On the day of the campaign, my team and I seek help from uni
friends to come to our booth to do a survey on eating disorder to see
whether they really understand about this health issue that most of us are
going through in our uni life. On that day, we distributed task and execute
on it. We have the survey form team, the mini game team and also some
of us doing the explanation on eating disorder, we also gave out some free
salad prepared to encourage more students to stop being the one that has
eating disorder which leads to health issue.
Through

this

assignment,

think

that

communication

and

coordination among the group mates are important. We shared our ideas
during the discussion and we worked as a team during the group meetings
to overcome obstacles. Everyone of us was important to make this event a
success. Thank you to our lecturer Miss Ding for her support.

Leading in the 21st century is a module that doesnt seem
important, actually this one of the module will sharpen the skills of a
student so that they can be standing on the society steadily and will not
be doubt by the others.
Throughout this assignment I learned about seriousness eating
disorder, causes and effect of it. Not only that, teamwork is a key to
making in this assignment, teamwork include communication between
members and there are problems that my team encounter but we solve it
as team, we discuss solution to solve it. I learned approaching people and
communicate with them.
Last but not least, for my team we have been leading each other in
a different way in this assignment, in order to achieve the same goal. I
also visited other team booth to understand what message they are trying
to pass on. From there I accumulate plenty of different knowledge.
Conclusion, I feel that this assignment pumped me with tons of
knowledge and sharpen my skill. If there is another chance I would like to
take part in this kind of activity again.

Our group had chosen Eating Disorder as the title of the topic for
this assignment. Eating is a serious mental illness. It is not a lifestyle
choice or a diet plan. This assignment is about open a booth at our
campus which is related to our topic. We did some discussions, sharing
ideas and giving opinions before organizing the booth. Then, each of us
were given different tasks to do. Even though each of us were doing
different tasks but we still managed to help each other when anyone of us
faced difficulties in doing their task.
Through this group assignment, Ive learnt how to organise a booth
properly. We did everything step by step to prevent mistakes and to make
sure that every details is clear enough and accurate. Planning before
organizing something is very important in order to make things successful.
Besides, everyone of us were led well for this group assignment.
Therefore, now I manage to plan and execute projects and adopt a
proactive approach in conflict management.
Lastly, Ive learnt that teamwork plays an important role for a group
assignment because when one is not willing to cooperate then nothing will
work well. Im so glad that my team members are willing to cooperate with
each other which leads us to have the ability to complete this assignment.
Although we faces some difficulties while doing the assignment, but all of
32

us work together to sort out problems. Ive also gained the courage to
communicate with strangers as we need to give out the survey forms on
the day we open our booth.

Lee Fong Yen

(0321976)
Through this group assignment, I am able to learn how to manage
and execute a project in a proper manner. I have also learnt the correct
way of doing research and to apply them in our group project. Besides
that, this project has also taught me to think out of the box and to see and
solve problems from a different perspective or view. Most importantly, it
has helped me understand eating disorder better, and to be able to
enhance my presentation and leadership skills through the execution of
campaign/project. Through the campaign, I have learnt the proper steps in
preparing a survey form and to collect and analyse data, as well as
interpreting them.
In terms of the topic we have chosen, i have understood what does
eating disorder really means, how it occurs, the consequences of having it
and the methods of treatments. This has also increase the awareness in
me to take steps and precautions to prevent this illness.
As a group assignment, this has encouraged me to learn how to
work with people outside our circle of friends, including those who have
33

different backgrounds and experiences. At times, when there were

disagreements, we learnt how to tolerate with each other and tried
discussing for the best solution.
Besides that, this assignment has also helped enhance teamwork
between group members, motivating each other and helping out one
another

when

there

were

difficulties.

This assignment also

helps

improve leadership qualities and teamwork abilities in every group

member.
Even though there were difficulties in setting a meeting where
everyone was able to show up, we compromised with each others time
and tolerate with each other in order to complete this assignment.
Therefore, we have learnt the importance of communication between
group members when a group assignment is concerned.

Lim Hong Wei

(0322741)
Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean, and that's
what makes a teamwork and a project that requires well planned proposal
to perfect execution work. Connecting with 10 other amazing unique
individuals that are gifted with different abilities in making great work is
what I cherished the most from this assignment.
Throughout this group project, I've gained knowledge and skillsets
that I will not ever acquire from attending lectures. Being able to manage
and execute a project in an orthodox way requires us as a team to do
proper research, applying it wisely as well as thinking of scenarios that
could possibly happen during the event; luckily for us, everything went
smoothly. Frequent times, when working as a group, great ideas can often
clash out among team members, but it usually end up with nothing due to
not reaching out an agreement or getting rejected by lecturers. Which I've
34

learnt to negotiate when ideas are not endorse by team members or

lecturers.
In addition to that, communication and courage played a big role in
bringing this project a success. When a campaign is set up where we
require people to give feedbacks or filling up survey form, I have to pick up
the courage and step up to students and convey the message properly to
them. This has greatly improve my communication skill as well as fighting
my fear in talking to strangers.
It's funny how all the skillsets or knowledge that I've mentioned
above learnt from experience and yet we cannot learn experience.
Experience is something that we have to undergo it, it cannot be created
nor learn it. Regardless of how this event turned out, what matters to me
would be my team members that I can call them my support pillars, as
well as the experience that I've experienced with them.

Loo Siah Mong

(0321995)
Throughout the process of finishing project , I have learnt that ,
teamwork is very important finishing and creating a good outcome . Not
only that , the reason why we choose health organization , eating disorder
is to held awareness among students . We hope that students will be more
aware of the importance of eating proper food meal in daily life.
We learnt that the most important thing in the process of finishing
the assignment is that communicating well between each of the group
members . Besides, although we might have different opinion in the
process of accomplishing this assignment such as different idea of
35

choosing the topic, mini games, design of poster and so on, but i am glad
that we could tolerate each other and learn to work as a team to achieve
the same goal.
During the event , we split the task into few session which is giving
out survey form , mini game session and salad gives away . During the
project execution, I this it is a very good experience to observe the
surrounding as well as capture some knowledge out from the syllabus . In
addition, i would thank Ms, Ding for the opportunity to having this activity
to boost up our courage and confidences to talk in front of strangers and
most importantly for the patient of guiding us step by step on the topic we
chose.
At the end of this assignment , I summarize that i have a amazing
group mates that would help each other when we face difficulties and
learnt to tolerate when facing any difficulties . Most importantly cooperate
and communicates is important in finishing this assignment. As a
conclusion ,although the he period is short, but it is very great to work
with them in this project execution and also the assignment.

Eating disorders might be a lifestyle choice that is serious and often
fatal illnesses that cause severe disturbances to a persons eating
behaviours. In this century of highly-developed technology, people are
often seen to share their daily lifestyle on social media. Judging and
36

commenting on others lifestyle had become a habit. Afraid of being judge,

most of the teenagers are obsessed with food and especially body weight
and shape. Common eating disorders seen among the teenagers include
anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. Some of the
teenagers are still yet to realise that theyre suffering from eating disorder.
And some of them might think lightly on the consequences of eating
disorder. Therefore, for our final assignment, our group had decided to
raise this issue in relation with health care.
To understand more about eating disorder which is also known as
purge disorder, our group had conducted a survey with the passerby
university students. From the survey, we concluded that more females
than males are more pertain to their body weight and shape. As a result,
more females are suffering from eating disorder. Nevertheless, this issue
can be prevented. We should not speak maliciously in person or social
media. We will never know how a nasty judgement on a persons figure
can lead to. Because the person might be affected by our comments and it
could be the cause of eating disorder. And as for us, young ladies, beauty
is not only define by our looks but also our heart. Therefore, be confident
of your natural self.
Via this assignment, Ive learned how to properly host an event.
Event planning is very important for a successful event. Weve learned
how to write a detailed proposal in black and white. Our lecturer, Ms Ding
Li Min, had given us step by step guidelines to draft out our proposal. Ive
realized the importance of teamwork. Fortunately, Ive a team of easygoing members to work with. Weve worked under a merry environment
without conflicts throughout this assignment. Weve helped each other
constantly when we come across difficulties. Ive also gained courage in
approaching passerby by giving out survey forms and interact with them. I
believe that the knowledge Id pick up will enhance my social skills as well
as my leadership skills in the time ahead.

37

Ive always come across news regarding problems like heart

disease, diabetes, HIVs and many other medical problems. Through this
project, I got the opportunity to learn more about a totally different
problem that often occurs among student like us. It is called the eating
disorder. From all sorts of research, I found out that eating disorder, also
known as the purge disorder, is any of a range of physical disorders
characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits. There are mainly
three types of eating disorder which includes Anorexia Nervosa, binge
eating disorder and Bulimia Nervosa. Each type of eating disorder has
different causes and they brings about different consequences as well. But
one thing for sure, it will definitely affect the health of an individual and it
may be fatal if the condition gets worse.
This problem is common among students especially preteens or
adolescents. There are a lot of causes for eating disorder and they may
vary according to different individuals and environment. Hence, it is rather
difficult to determine whether one suffers from eating disorder or not. After
conducting all sorts of research and surveys, we found that more female
suffer from eating disorder. This is because girls tend to be more concern
about their body appearance and this may cause them to eat less in order
to keep their body in their desired way. There are no standard treatments
for this problem as it is best to be tailored according to each individual. As
long as one can maintain a healthy eating lifestyle, for example eat on
time and not to overeat, one can definitely prevent eating disorder.
Overall, I think that it is really important to be aware of own health
condition. People are willing to spend money for annual medical check up
but they dont practice a healthy lifestyle which in the end brings about
serious medical conditions. Being able to participate in this project really is
my honour as I really get to expose myself towards this problem. I learnt
some basics of eating disorder and I truly believe that it may come in
handy to me in the future. Id say that to prepare and start a project from
scratch is really a difficult task as it require a lot of effort and commitment.
Thanks to all my cooperative group mates and lecturer, Im able to indulge
in a healthy teamwork environment. Im really thankful because Ive been
away for a week due to my participation in a study trip to Italy, but all my

38

group mates are considerate and tolerant that they helped to cover my
part during the booth day.
All in all, I learnt the steps to start up a project for example, we
need to prepare a complete proposal which include objective, aim, ways to
conduct and etc. Then, we need to distribute all the workloads according
in order to ease communication and to improve efficiency. After that, we
need to put in effort to make the booth day, which is also the event day a
great success. With all these knowledge and experience, Im sure it will be
an advantage to me when I start to work in the society.

39

Wong Jia Jing

(0327221)
Before a campaign can be executed, first we had to prepare a
proposal for our lecturer acknowledgment and also to get the approval in
order to start our campaign. Therefore, through this assignment, Ive learn
how to properly begin and prepare a proposal formally, making sure all
details are clear and precise in order for our lecturer to understand and
know clearly what is our campaign about. As weve involve survey and
mini game in our project, Ive also learn how to prepare a survey form in a
more effective and efficient way.

Through this project, since weve have

to approach students for survey, Ive learn to be more friendly and

outspoken when going up to student for surveys and this had also improve
my communication skill. Most importantly, Ive also improved my
leadership skill and communicating skill by explaining and presenting on
our project topic, Eating Disorder to student.
As this was a group assignment, working as one and working well
in group/team plays a very significant role in order to bring this project a
success. One of the difficulties weve faced is to set a meeting time
whereby all the member could attend. But with our toleration, and after
compromising with each others time, we manage to complete this project
in the given duration. Weve also learnt to motivate one another when
problems hits, and work together to come out with the best solution.
This group assignment had help enhance team work between
group member as we tolerate each others flaws, accept each others
opinion and work together to come out with solution to problem faced.
Through this assignment, not only our teamwork abilities has enhanced,
our friendship had also grow to be strong. I believe that each and every
one of us had improve our leadership skill and also enhanced teamwork
abilities.

(0327295)
This assignment gave me a great experience with all the
preparation regarding eating disorder. Throughout the process, I had learnt
a lot about eating disorder and found information that are useful to our
daily life. Based on the booth presentation on 26 th October opposite
student central to the university students, there are some people whom do
not know about eating disorder and also the eating pyramid. Therefore,
the booth presentation is helpful in gaining knowledge to the students.
During the presentation, we were to present our survey forms
to the students. In most of the surveys, many teenagers nowadays are
afraid to be judge by other people. They feel insecure about themselves
and not willing to socialize with people. Therefore, they tend to eat less
because they think they will lose weight and become slimmer. In my
opinion, I think it is mentally and physically unhealthy. The mindset of
theirs are due to they are not informative about healthy diets. Therefore,
in this presentation, the respondents played a game to understand the
food pyramid.
Besides, it is important to have teamwork among members. I
am more than grateful to have them as my group members. We could
tolerate each other even we have different opinions. Other than that,
although we all have different timetable, but we try to arrange our
meeting to avoid conflicts and disagreements.

41

In conclusion, this assignment had brought advantages

benefits to everyone. Besides, I had also learnt about leadership and
teamwork throughout this assignment.

Yee Jyh Lin

(0322408)
For this assignment, my group decide to choose Health as our
topic after discussing. Since there is only a few week until the date of
organizing the booth, all my group members have given out their best on
times and ideas to enable us to complete the booth. We split the tasks and
I was assigned to design a mini game for the booth with Lim Hong Wei and
Chan Yi Fung. We had a hard time when doing the game since we all are
bad at designing but luckily other members who completed their tasks
help us immediately right after they completed their tasks. I felt grateful
to them for being supportive and helpful.
On the 26th October 2016, our booth was prepared. The event was
from 10am until 3pm which took 5 hours. After discussing with my group,
we decided to take turns taking care of the booth and I was assigned to
take care of the mini games section from 10-12pm. I felt nervous at start
because I was a shy person but as time passes by, I was getting better
since everyone was quite enthusiastic.
In conclusion, I have learnt the importance of teamwork in order to
complete a task successfully. I also learnt to communicate and cooperate
properly with each other. Besides that, this assignment also allow me to
42

learnt how to avoid unhealthy eating habits and how to eat in a healthy
ways.
