Lesson Plan Template
PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson:
Math:
STANDARD 2 Shapes/Geometry
Through their explorations, play, and social interactions, children identify
and
describe simple geometric shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle) and show an
awareness
of their positions in relation to other objects.
STANDARD 5 Patterns/Algebra Through their explorations, play, and
social interactions, children identify, repeat, and describe simple patterns
using concrete objects.
List the Learning Objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson. Use the
following format: Students will be able to
Students will be able to identify the simple shapes like circle, triangle,
square and rectangle. They will also be able to use the simple shapes to
create their own pattern of some sort.
Describe how the objective is relevant to students lives.
I will explain to the children that these shapes are all around in their daily
lives. Like for example when they are eating. Their piece of pizza is in the
shape of a triangle so they will be able to make connections to different
things throughout their everyday life.
List the words relevant to the content area that you will either introduce
and/or review during your lesson.

Triangle

Square
Circle
Rectangle
Pattern

List the materials you will need to teach the lesson.

iPad
Different shape objects
Paper
Pencil
Crayons or markers

ASSESSMENT
Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to
measure students level of understanding toward the learning objective(s)
prior to teaching the lesson.

APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson pre-assessment. (if

applicable)
Is your pre-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?
Describe the timeline as to when you plan to administer the preassessment?
(Recommended timeline is a minimum of two days prior to teaching your
lesson).

Create and insert a table/chart/graph that shows the pre-assessment data

results. (if applicable)

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have
demonstrated they know) will be used to design the lesson objectives,
instruction, and post-assessment.
Done after Pre-Assessment
Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment
you will use to measure students level of understanding toward the learning objectives after
teaching the lesson.

For the post assessment I will have the children show me that they
understood what the shapes were by telling me which shapes they used in
their pattern. I will also have them create me their own pattern to see that
they understood what a pattern was.
APPENDIX: Include a copy of a Key/Product (completed by you, the teacher) which
provides a model of the desired outcome.

Is your key included at the end of this lesson plan?

TECHNOLOGY
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to
incorporate into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.
I plan to use an iPad for this lesson sense it is a distance learning lesson
their will not be a SMART Board to use to demonstrate what each of the
shapes are or what a pattern is but I plan to also use my computer to show

them what each shape looks like if they do not fully understand by the
drawings that I have laid out for them.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to
meet the needs of all learners and accommodate differences in students
learning, culture, language, etc. * Be sure that these accommodations are
based on what you identified/described in your contextual information
(Task I).
Different accommodations that I will put into thought are they are between
the ages of 3-5 so I need time to move around in between different
activities so I will have me go over things with them for about 10 minutes
and then I will let them play for about 5-10 minutes to get away from me
direct teaching them and then I will call back and then finish the lesson.

MANAGEMENT
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student
behavioral/developmental needs in order to keep students on task and actively engaged
throughout the lesson.

I will watch to see when they are starting to get restless and I will then let
them go for 10 minutes and play and then I will have them come back and
we will finish the lesson. I will also tell them if I feel that they arent
listening I will say to them 1, 2, 3 eyes and ears on me.

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
I Do
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome of
learning objectives)
Describe how you will activate student interest and present the learning
objective in an engaging way (this is your lesson opening).

I will ask them know you know what shape this is? I will hold up objects
that are square, circle, rectangle, and triangle. I will then wait for their
response. I will then go through the list of shapes and show them pictures
of each shape and I will tell them a few things about it. Like for example I
will tell them that a triangle has 3 sides. A square has 4 sides. After we go
over what each shape is we will then talk about what a pattern is. I will
show them examples of different patterns.
Describe how you will communicate (to students) how the objective is
relevant to their lives.
I will tell them that there are so many of these different shapes in the world
around you. Like for example look at the clock that is a circle. And there
are so many shapes that are around that you dont even realize.
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to
model/explain/demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of the
objective. (cite theories/theorists)
Piagets theory of Schemas will be used because the students will be
repeating the words and making their own examples to make connections
to the words. Like for example can you find one of the shapes that we just
talked about around your house somewhere?
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on
to guided practice.
I will hold up the shapes and I will have them tell me what each one of the
shapes are before moving on.
We Do
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to
practice the skills and content needed to meet the learning objective(s).

We will create different patterns together using different materials from

their home using different shapes. We will them also create a pattern
together by the child deciding what shapes to use and then we can talk
about what order we want to put them in to create a pattern.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on to independent
practice.

I will ask the children what shape do you think comes next in the pattern
that we created. And if they do well then we will move on to the You Do.
You Do
(Students engage in independent practice)

Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills
required by the lesson objectives? (this is the post-assessment)

The children will create their own pattern by either drawing a pattern or
getting different objects that are different shapes to create a pattern. After
they create their own pattern they will have to tell me what shapes they
used and what shape would come next if they were to continue the
pattern.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of your post-assessment.
Is your BLANK COPY of the post-assessment included at the end of this
lesson plan?
Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective and any
skills/content that were taught in an interactive manner (whole/small
group, etc.).
To end the lesson I will have them show me their pattern and then they will
share what shapes they used like they did in the You Do part of the lesson.

ANALYZE
(This portion may only be done after the post assessment is
collected/scored.)
Describe the results of the Post-Assessment and be sure to address the following:
Students progress from pre-to-post assessment. (if applicable)
Factors that may have influenced the post assessment results.
How the results of the post assessment highlight what areas of the
lesson will require re-teaching (if any).
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph (below) that shows the post-assessment data
results. If you used the same document for both the pre and post assessments, it is strongly
encouraged that you show the comparison.

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Description:

REFLECT
List and describe two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction
(successes).

One thing that I felt that went well was my cousins were super excited
about going around their house and finding the objects of different shapes.
Another thing that I thought went well was when I was teaching the lesson
I asked my cousins if they needed a break and my little cousin McKinley
said No! Keep going this is fun! and so did her older brother so that was
nice to see. In my lesson I used very clear directions on what I wanted
them to and they seemed to follow them quite well and did not have any
questions. I also used student center learning in this lesson as well.
Another this that I felt went well was the children seemed to really enjoy
that they got to pick what objects they used to create their pattern with. I
believe this part went well because they got to choose what they wanted
to use and how they were going to create a pattern.
List and describe two things you feel were challenges during the planning, implementation
and/or assessment of the lesson.

One of the things that I felt was a challenged me we when we were

FaceTiming we had poor connection in parts of the lesson so I either
couldnt see them or they couldnt see me. There was also a time when my
voice was delayed the childrens mom said. That is not necessarily my fault
because technology is not always dependable all the time. But, we got
through the lesson and we just had to hang up and call back or I had to
move to another pace because of my internet connection. Another thing
that I felt was challenge was that when the children first started the lesson
they did not really get the concept of me saying 1, 2, 3 eyes and ears on
me. I am not sure if that was because they could not take me as their
cousin serious because normally I dont say that and they might have been
really confused by that.
List and describe two ideas for redesign you would make if you were to teach this lesson
again.

If I were to do this lesson again I would make sure we both have strong
internet connection before I taught the lesson. But, I know that we cannot
always depend on that. Another thing that I would change is I would try to
do a better quality assessment before. I believe this would have went
better if I could have taught this lesson face-to-face. If I were to do this

lesson again I would definitely do it in person. This lesson was way

different teaching through distance learning than teaching this lesson faceto-face. For this reason I thought it was harder to keep their attention in
the beginning just because this was a new way for them seeing me. I feel
that that is how it is most of the time when it comes to distance learning. It
all depends on the grade level that you are teaching as well. When I took
online classes over the summer I felt they went well because my teacher
had clear directions on what we were supposed to do for each assignment.
And I feel that if that is there it will be easier on the student and also the
teacher as well.
