Weakness/Opportunity for
Improvement

I have great
Interpersonal skills and
have the ability to
connect on a personal
level with many
different people.

I sometimes struggle with

patient and family
education because I
sometimes lack confidence
in my own knowledge. I
need to place more trust in
myself and the education I
have received so that I can
effectively pass it on to
others.

I am empathetic, and
have become more so
throughout my
experience in nursing
school.

Unit Related
Leadership

I have great
interpersonal skills and
have the ability to
work well with multiple
personality types.
I lead by example.
I value teamwork and
treat others with
respect.

I struggle sometimes with

being entirely culturally
competent.

I generally lack confidence

when I am new to an
organization, which
discourages me from
taking leadership roles or
taking charge in certain
situations.
I do not enjoy dealing with
conflict, although I feel I
am capable. I find myself
avoiding it at times, which

Short term goals/strategies
Present-2 years

I will focus on honing my

patient and family
education skills by
trusting myself and
reviewing material as
needed so that I am
confident when I provide
education to others.
I will be proactive in
providing patients and
families with the
necessary education

Date: 12/05/2016

Long term goals/strategies

3-5 years

I will take on a leadership

position on the unit and help
develop unit education protocols
for patients and families.
A goal I have is to view
everyone equally and
nonjudgmentally, which will
shine through in the care that I
deliver.

I will continue to exercise

my interpersonal skills
and will set stereotypes
and personal
judgements/assumptions
aside when working with
patients and families of
different cultures or belief
systems.
I will put the effort in to
get to know the unit I
work on so that I gain the
confidence to take action.
I will not avoid conflict,
but will address it calmly
and confidently when
necessary.
I will practice saying no
when someone asks me

I will apply for management a

leadership or management
position, such as charge nurse
or nurse manager, so that I can
play a bigger role in ensuring
that patients receive the highquality care that they deserve.
This will also allow me to play a
bigger role in ensuring the unit
is functioning at its highest
capacity.

is usually not beneficial.

I am a people pleaser and
will often help others at
my own expense because I
have trouble saying no. I
often find myself
overloaded with tasks or
projects because of this.

I chose to read The

Disease to Please: Curing
the People-Pleasing
Syndrome by Harriet B.
Braiker, PhD because I am
a people-pleaser and
would like to learn when
and how to draw the line
between my own wants
and needs and the
demands of others. This
book helped me
distinguish that fine line!

Shadowing
Experience

I aim to be someone that my

coworkers feel they can come to
for help and express their
feelings openly.

I plan to pass the NCLEX

and gain my certification
as a Registered Nurse in
AZ.

I would like to write an article to

be published in a nursing
journal. The topic will likely be
in pediatric oncology, as I plan
to specialize in pediatric
oncology when I go back to
school to get my DNP degree.

I plan to become certified

to administer
chemotherapy once I
transfer to the pediatric
hematology/oncology unit
in a year or so.

to do something that I do
not have the time for.

Research Nurse in Adult

Neurology (with the
University of Arizona.) In
her role as a nurse
navigator, I was able to
witness her providing
excellent education to
parents of children with
infectious diseases. By
watching and listening to
her I feel I learned better
techniques for providing
patient and family
education.
I participated in two
professional development
activities: BLS for
Healthcare Providers
course and a flu shot clinic
at the University of Arizona
College of Medicine.
During the flu shot clinic I
screened health care
workers for
contraindications to the flu
vaccine (such as egg
allergies or previous
Guillain-Barre Syndrome),
administered flu shots to
health care workers, and
provided education to
health care workers about
the vaccine and what to
expect after the vaccine.
During this experience I
got a lot of practice
providing patient
education!
