LAB 15: Acceptable Use Policy

EAST COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
PLEASE READ AND ACCEPT TERMS OF USE
Educational opportunities can be enhanced and supplemented through the use of the
Internet and our school systems server/network. Teaching students to be digital citizens is
essential in the 21st century. Administrators, teachers, educators, and all school employees will
work together to ensure the safety of our students and staff in relation to Internet, school
network, and any other technology usage. The Internet and school network are to be utilized to
assist educators in teaching our students the NC curriculum. Faculty, staff, students, parents, and
visitors that use the Internet/network must agree to uphold our high standards which include the
following:

Abide by all policies set by East County Board of Education.


Follow all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Abide by and enforce all copyright laws.
Do NOT engage in cyber-bullying, scamming, chain emails, or any activity that
would potentially damage the server.
Do NOT create, store, or transmit fraudulent, illegal, harassing, obscene, or
pornographic electronic communication in any form to anyone.
Any and all information created, stored, and transmitted via Internet/school
network is subject to review, inspection, and/or storage or deletion by school
personnel and/or Board members.
The school network cannot be used for personal profit or gain.
Monitor all students activity on the Internet, school network, and any electronic
device whether school owned or not.
Model safe, ethical, productive behavior and teach children to do the same when
online. Teachers should be aware of recommended time limits for the age of
children in their classes, and model technology usage after guidelines stipulated
by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC),
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), among other expert organizations in this
field.
Follow all guidelines stipulated by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA). Any teachers wishing to include students in social media (i.e. a class
Twitter account), must obtain principal approval and written parental consent.

Students may not be identified specifically. Last names may not be used on social
media.
Comply with the Childrens Internet Protection Act (CIPA), and Neighborhood
Childrens Internet Protection Act (NCIPA).
Filtering software will be utilized to prevent access by adults and/or students to
inappropriate material intentionally or by accident.
Any questions or concerns should be directed to the teacher, guidance counselor,
school principal, or Human Resources Director.
The use of the Internet and the school network is monitored. Failure to follow
these rules, procedures, and any governing laws could result in loss of ability to
use the Internet or school network and/or consequences and/or notification of
legal authorities if necessary.
o Potential consequences for Students: parents/guardians notified, financial
compensation for any damages, In-school suspension or Out-of-school
suspension, or other disciplinary action.
o Potential consequences for Employees: formal reprimand to go in
employees record, financial compensation for any damages, other
disciplinary action, termination of employment.
Employees, students, or any user of the Internet or school network, whether
wireless or cabled, whether by school owned equipment or not, must agree to
these terms of use before gaining access to the Internet or school network.
