MUMBAI:BanksinIndiawilleitherreplaceoraskuserstochangethesecuritycodesofas
manyas3.2milliondebitcardsinwhat'semergingasoneofthebiggesteverbreachesof
financialdatainIndia,peopleawareofthemattersaid.Severalvictimshavereported
unauthorisedusagefromlocationsinChina.
Ofthecards,2.6millionaresaidtobeontheVisaandMasterCardplatformand600,000on
theRuPayplatform.TheworsthitofthecardissuingbanksareStateBankofIndia,HDFC
Bank,ICICIBank,YESBankandAxisBank,thepeoplesaid.
ThebreachissaidtohaveoriginatedinmalwareintroducedinsystemsofHitachiPayment
Services,enablingfraudsterstostealinformationallowingthemtostealfunds.Hitachi,which
providesATM,pointofsale(PoS)andotherservices,couldn'tbereachedforcommentlate

HDFCBanksaidithadalreadytakenactioninthematterafewweeksback."Besidesadvisingthosecustomerswhoweknowhaveused
anonHDFCBankATMintherecentpasttochange(their)ATMPIN,weareadvisingourcustomerstouseonlyHDFCBankATMsaswe
believesecuritycontrolsatsomeoftheotherbankATMsmaynotbeatparwithHDFCBankATMs,"aspokespersonsaid."Wetakethis
opportunitytoreiteratethatit'salwaysprudenttochangeATMPINsfromtimetotime.Itpreventsmisuse."

whitelabelATMserviceproviders,"SBIChiefInformationOfficerMrutyunjayMahapatratoldET.
"Therefore,asaprecautionarymeasure,wehaveblockedsixlakhdebitcards.Wehaveassuredourcustomersthattherehasnotbeen
anybreachontheATMnetworkofSBI."
Visa,MasterCard,ICICIBank,AxisBankandYESBankdidnotrespondtoqueriessentlateonWednesday.
BankshadbeenreceivingmultiplecomplaintsfromcustomersaboutcardsbeingusedinChinaatvariousATMsandpointofsale
terminals.TheyinturnalertedVisaandMasterCard.AforensicauditisbeingconductedbyBengalurubasedpaymentsecurityspecialist
SISA.
Somesourcessaidthemalwareinfectiontookaboutsixweekstodetect,compromisingtransactionsthattookplaceduringthisperiod.As
manyas3.2millioncardswereusedontheHitachinetworkduringthistime.
