Lesson Plan

Teacher Name: Hilary Jonus

School: Mesa Verde Elementary

Subject/Grade: 1-2
Date: 10/04/16
Learning Objective: I want the students to be able to learn and decode six new sight words.
Links to Arizona State Standards: 2RF.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word
analysis skills in decoding words.
Time Frame: 30 minutes
Anticipatory Set: YouTube video, The Sight Word Song (Version 1), Harry Kindergarten
Music on Smartboard
Relevancy: The purpose of this lesson is to increase the students reading fluency by adding six
new sight words to their vocabulary.
Check for Understanding: Each page/activity has the six words on it, which we will review
each time to make sure they are retaining the words.
Assessment: I have big notecards with the six words on them that I will have on a chart hanging
up in front of the students during the whole lesson. Once we complete the activities, I will have
each of them read all six words on the notecards to assess what they have learned. I will keep
track of each students level of reading fluency for these six words.
Learning Connections: Part of the students curriculum and classroom goals are to increase
their reading fluency by learning new sight words each week. They will use their prior learning
of decoding new words and apply it to this lesson.
Learning Task Description: I will implement multiple methods during the lesson such as the
see and say method when using the notecards, constant repetition, and through games such as a
word search. The activities are engaging and fun so that the students will be more willing to
learn.
Modeling: Before beginning the lesson, I will explain to the students that we will be working on
learning sight words and start by showing them the notecards. For each activity, I will go over
the sight words again, explain the directions, and then complete the first task for them so they
can see how it should be done. For example, for the word search I will find the first word and
circle it while explaining that the words can be found in multiple directions.
Guided Practice: The students will complete a word search, learn how to alphabetize the new
words, and color code by matching the words to a color. Once they have finished the lesson and

learned the new sight words, they can use the new words to help them decode similar words
while reading during other classroom activities.
Special Class Characteristics: I will modify the pace of my teaching strategies based on each
students academic level. For the higher students I will challenge them throughout the activities,
and for the lower students I will make sure to teach at a rate that meets their needs.
Closure: I will pass around a toy microphone and have each student summarize by having them
tell me one thing they learned during the lesson.
Materials and Resources: Smartboard, YouTube, notecards, paper activities, colored pencils,
pencils, scissors, glue, and toy microphone.
