DIAGNOSIS
The following information and illllstrations on wiring
diagrams. wiring harness location. fuse panel and fusible link
will aid in electrical diagnosis . Refer to ELECTRICAL
C I R DIAGNOSIS
~ ~ ~ for
~ procedures .
A combination junction and fuse panel is mounted on
the cowl under the instrument panel . Each wire from the
fuse Panel is color coded to simplify servicing .

SHORT CIRCUIT 'IISI'ING

Do not use a circuit breaker in place of a fuse when
checking for a short circuit on cars equipped with the
E l e c t r o n i c Lamp Monitoring System without first
disconnecting the circuit boards at the front and rear body
connectors . Failure to disconnect the circuit boards will
result in damage to them .

FUSIBLE LINK
Cutlass and Toronado have three fusible links. 88, 9 8 ,
Omega and Starfire have two fusible links. These fusible Links
are located in the engine compartment. For location and wire
gage (size) refer to Fusible Link Location IUustrations and
color wiring circuits.
If a short circuit occurs, the fusible link opens,
protecting the rest of the circuit.
A new fusible link can be installed, after the short circuit
is located and repaired, as follows: (Fig. 8A1-13 and 8A1-14)
1 . Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the fusible link from the junction block
or starter solenoid.
3 . Cut the harness directly behind the connector to
remove damaged fusible link.
4. Strip harness wire approximately 112".
5. Slide the new fusible link over harness wire, crimp so
that all wires are securely fastened.
6. Connect fusible link to junction block or starter
solenoid.
7 . Connect negative battery terminal.

be disconnected. If the car has Electronic Lamp Monitorin

do not use a circuit breaker in place of a fuse when check
for a short circuit without first disconnecting the drc
boards at the front and rear body connectors. Remove
printed circuit board at the front, located above the
panel. Disconnect the harness at the rear in the trunk.)
Failures in a circuit are usually caused by short or open
circuits. Open circuits are caused by breaks in the wiring,
faulty connections or mechanical failure in a part such as a
switch or circuit breaker. Short circuits are usually caused by
wires from differect units in the circuit contacting one
another or by a wire grounding to the metal of the body due
to insulation cut through by a sharp metal edge, etc.
The following information may aid in locating and
correcting a failure in the body wiring electrical system.
1. If a major portion of the electrical circuit becomes
inoperative, the failure may be due to improper connections
between the front and rear harness, or between the front
---harness and the chassis wiring connector.
2. If only one of the circuits is inoperative, the failure
is due t o an open circuit or short in the affected circuit,
Short circuits usually result in blown fuses or in the case of
power equipment circuits, in the circuit breaker opening the
circuit. If the fuse is not blown and the circuit affected is a
lamp circuit, check the bulb before proceeding with any
checking procedures.
3 . The dome lamp, key buzzer and courtesy lamp
circuits are designed so that the switches are in the "ground"
side of the circuit. If the lamps remain "on" even though the
jamb or courtesy lamp switches are not "on7', the failure is
probably due to defective switches, or to the wire leading to
the switches grounded t o the metal body. (Door switches are
"on" when the driver door is open.)
The 88-98 Desel Glow Plug system has its own fuse on
the panel and is labeled DIESEL. It is a 5 amp fuse, the glow
plug system will not operate if it is blown.
The 88-98 fuse has a flat plastic body covering the fuse
element. The fuse amp rating is marked on the body of the
fuse.
To determine whether a fuse is blown it can be removed
and visually checked for a burned element. The fuse may be
tested in the fuse panel by grounding one lead of a 12-volt
test light, turning on ignition switch and touchng test points
on the fuse. (Fig, 8A1-15) If the fuse is bad, the light will be
"ON7' at one test point only. If both sides light, the fuse is
OK.

HEADLAMP SWITCH
The headlamp switch controls the headlamps, parking
lamps, tail lamps, and instrument panel lamps. The dome
and/or quarter lamps are turned on by turning the headlamp
switch fully counterclockwise. The headlamps are protected
by a circuit breaker in the headlamp switch. In addition, the
tail lamps dome lamps, quarter lamps and instrument panel
lamps are protected by fuses located in the fuse block. The
brightness of the instrument panel lamps is adjustable by
means of a rheostat built into the headlamp switch. Turning
the knob of the switch dims or brightens the lamps.

HEADLAMP CIRCUIT BREAKER

The normal lighting load is not sufficient to cause the
circuit breaker (located in the headlamp switch) t o open. If a
short occurs, the circuit breaker will cause the lights t o
flicker. This flickering will continue until the cause of the
short is corrected. The circuit breaker is not adjustable.
HORN RELAY (Fig. 8A1-54)
Starfire, Omega, Cutlass, 8 8 and 98 with reminder
package have the horn relay taped to the main 1.P. harness
above the fuse panel. On Cutlass, 88 and 98 without
reminder package, the horn relay is located in the
convenience center next t o the fuse block (88-98) and below
the headlamp switch (Cutlass).

The Toronado horn relay and key buzzer is part of the

junction block mounted on the dash in the engine
cornpartmen t .

The neutral start switch is located on the steering
column, adjust switch as shown in Fig. 8A1-56.
The Cutlass, 88 and 98 have a mechanical lock out.
Refer t o Section 3A for information. However, a backup
lamp switch adjustment is available. (Fig. 8A1-58)

GENERAL INFORMATION
Starfires with L 4 engines in California only are equipped
with an electronic fuel control system. The oxygen sensor
used in this system must be replaced every 15,000 miles and
a flag in the speedometer face reminds the driver when this
service is due. The flag is yellow with the word "SENSOR",
and remains in view until manually reset at the time the
Oxygen sensor is replaced, See Section 6E for oxygen sensor
service.
