PROCEDURE

Introduction

(8 min):

Teacher asks students to find a spot on the carpet for our new word family
book

Last week we learned og and today we are going to learn about a new word
family. Words that end in u and g
Read Billy the Bugs New Jug
Stop reading throughout to prompt students with questions, calling on those
with their hands up
Show students the new worksheet and ask them to get out their LA duotang
and put the worksheet at the back, then write their name on it
Ask students to make their way back to their desks
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Students are expected to have
their listening ears on and put their hand up if they would like to add to
conversation. No talking over each other and no talking over teacher.
Students respond when called on.

Teacher hands out worksheets and helps students put in their duotangs and
then grabs students attention and proceeds when everyone is quiet

Brainstorm on SMART board words that end in ug

Brainstorm a minimum of six words, use popsicle sticks to choose students to


come up to the board to participate

Rhyme/song:
Put the b with the ug, what do you get?
b ug bug! clap hands
Run through the rest of the list of words to help students put the words into
their long-term memory
Introduce the craft, showing them what we are making (showing steps) and
letting students know what materials they will need (scissors, pencils, pencil
crayon/crayons)
Assessment: Students previous knowledge of words outside of what was
read in book

Teacher walks students step by step and demonstrates each step:

1) Name on top of craft

2) Cut out list (strip, not single) of consonants


3) Slide list through slits on bugs body
4) Make note of each ug word you see and fill in on the spots allotted
5) Once teacher checks you have 7 ug words, colour bug
When students are finished their craft, they put up their hand for a teacher to
check
Craft goes in mailbox to go home and student gets out their worksheet in their
LA duotang
Assessment: Students ability to come up with ug words
Accommodations: Teacher walks around class assisting students with their
crafts and answers questions

Teacher explains to students how to fill in worksheet (they will have done
same worksheets before, different words) as each student completes craft.

Students fill in ug words on one worksheet and then print 5 ug words three
times practicing their printing
