CT OBSERVATION 2 LESSON PLAN

Focus Concept: Interpret and Solve Problems Using Bar Graphs

Date(s): 11/16/2016
Essential Question(s): How can you solve problems using data
represented in bar graphs?
Vocabulary: bar graph, data, title, scale, labels, intervals, horizontal bar graphs, vertical bar graphs,
pictographs, key
Related Centers/ Resources: Problem Solving with Bar Graphs
Opening (Engage):
Students will independently complete pg. 84, Example. Monitor,
select, and sequence students to share their strategies with the class.
(They may use KWPL, counting back on the bar graph, algorithm,
etc. in order to solve the problem).

*Building Understanding (Whole Group Exploration-Core):

Have students work with partners to complete the Bar Graph
Problem Solving packet. (Make sure to add the pictograph symbols
and pictures for question #13). At this time, groups may be pulled
for reteaching concepts as needed. Use HOT questions to facilitate
discussion within the small groups.

Pair/Share HOT Questions:

What can you tell just by comparing
the lengths of the bars in the graphs?
Explain.

Pair/Share HOT Questions:

What do you need to find?
What operation(s) will you use to find
the answer?
What are the steps you used to find the
answer?
Can you write another math problem
using the same data?
What other challenging questions can
you answer using the data in the bar
graph?

*Independent /Small Group Practice (Differentiation):
