With Moorabool Shires fire danger period
approaching, Detective Senior Constable
Nathan Ractliffe said there would be no
tolerance towards reckless behavior.
Fire restrictions will commence in
Moorabool at 1am on Monday December 12.
Detective Ractliffe said with the above
average rain and extensive growth, a
significant increase in fire activity was
anticipated.
Zero Tolerance means that it is illegal to
light a burn off or cause a fire to be lit without
a permit during the fire danger period, he

said.
If your actions are reckless to the presence
of a fire in the fire danger period you can
expect to be spoken to by the police.
The Zero Tolerance strategy, which was
first introduced to Moorabool during the
2005/2006 fire danger period, saw a 65 per
cent reduction in turnouts to illegal burns a figure that was welcomed by the Bacchus
Marsh and Ballan Fire Brigade Groups,
Victoria Police and Moorabool Shire.
Detective Ractliffe said before undertaking
any burn-offs, residents are to ensure they
are familiar with the rules and regulations

The intent is that if an offence is detected,
the Police will be requested by the Fire
Brigade to attend and investigate any alleged
offence.
Moorabool Shire Mayor, David Edwards
encouraged residents to visit the CFAs
website, which has a wide variety of
information on what people can and cant do
during the declared fire season.
A written permit can be issued by a
municipal fire prevention officer or the CFA
district office and is required to burn off
grass, undergrowth, weeds or vegetation.
Lighting a fire in open air without a permit

is an offence and can bring a penalty of over
$21,000 and/or 12-months imprisonment.
I also ask that, especially given our wet
spring, landowners be considerate of their
neighbours and make sure they present fire
hazards by keeping their land clear, Mr
Edwards said.
From a Council point of view, no Local
Law Permits to burn will be issued during
this time.

Families in need will experience the joy of Christmas
this year, thanks to Ballan
District Health and Care.
The local health clinic is taking donations of unwrapped
gifts for children and adults.
BDH&Cs newest social
worker, Esther Hill said the
appeal was a great way of
having gratitude for what we
have and paying it forward.
The appeal targets all ages,
there will of course be quite
a focus on the children, but I

think its important for all of
the ages to be represented,
she said.
Its important to recognise
that there are people within
our community that are less
fortunate than us and would
be gratefully appreciative of
gifts this Christmas.
A Christmas tree is located
in the foyer of the GP Super Clinic that is decorated
with Giving Stars made by
BDH&C aged care residents.
Ms Hill said the stars would
specify the age and gender

of those receiving the gift.
People can bring the presents to the GP Clinic and
give it to the ladies at reception; they will then be gifted
to the appropriate people,
she said.
The Giving Stars appeal
got a surprise boost when
WestWind Energy Managing Director, Tobi Geiger
presented the Health Clinic
with a $1000 cheque.
Christmas should be a
time of joy and happiness,
but for some households it

can be extremely difficult,
Mr Geiger said.
WestWind Energy is committed to the community,
thats why were delighted
to be able to help Ballan District Health and Care with
its Christmas appeal, which
will go a long way to making
Christmas a little brighter
for many families.

Court in action

Moorabool Shire council has won
a court case against a man accused
of using his property as a dumping
ground.
Tony Anile appeared in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates Court on Friday
December 2.
A council ruling, which came after
a number of complaints from nearby
residents, described Mr Aniles
property as unsightly.
The drama began almost a year ago on
January 6 when an authorised council
officer visited the property.
Since this date there has been numerous
warnings and an infringement notice,
together with many adjourned court

cases.
The court heard that Mr Anile also
allowed a fellow property developer to
dump waste on his worksite, despite a
looming council infringement.
Unimpressed
by
his
actions,
Magistrate Gregory Robinson said the
accused was effectively running a
private dumping ground.
It also looks like youre ignoring
what the council is asking you to do.
Mr Anile was ordered to pay a fine of
$1119.90 and costs of $1650 to Moorabool
Shire Council.
In a separate and unrelated case,
a man has been given 120-hours of
community work after forcing police to

give chase.
At around 5:40pm on June 20, Brandon
North was observed riding a trail bike
on Halletts Way in Bacchus Marsh.
When Police turned on their sirens to
apprehend the individual, the learner
driver sped away, but was eventually
caught.
In his defence, the accused claimed
that he took off because he was scared.
In his sentencing Magistrate Robinson
chose a community corrections order
over revoking his license, which the
accused claimed he needed for his job.
I think its better that you work, have
a job and pay taxes, Mr Robinson said.

Investing in more ambos

Bacchus Marsh will receive a boost in ambulances resources
following the largest ever-funding increase in Victoria.
A new 24-hour team with 14 full-time paramedics will be
introduced to Bacchus Marsh alongside a new ambulance
vehicle.
Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard visited the Ballan
ambulance station last week to celebrate the hard work of
local paramedics and said patients in Moorabool will see
the benefits.
The 14 full-time equivalent paramedics will be in addition
to the existing Bacchus Marsh team of 23 paramedics who
currently provide 24-hour ambulance coverage from the
station.
The announcement is part of a record $500 million
investment over five years to employ 450 more paramedics,
buy new vehicles and build new branches across the state.
Bacchus Marsh will also benefit from the establishment of
a new super response centre to meet growing demand in
Melbournes northwest.
The centre will enable flexible deployment of additional
paramedics who can support local paramedics to respond
during periods of peak demand.
Were also delivering $2.5 million to build the new stateof-the-art ambulance station in Bacchus Marsh, which will
further boost local resources needed to enable paramedics
to quickly respond to local medical emergencies and save
lives.
Ambulance performance in Moorabool Shire continues to
improve, with the average Code 1 response time of 16:42
minutes in the September quarter, an improvement on the
17:30 minute response times a year earlier.
I congratulate the hard work of our local paramedics, its
thanks to them the people in Moorabool can have the peace
of mind that emergency care is close by when they need it
most, Mr Howard said.

There were a lot of sad faces
around Bacchus Marsh last
month, for a lady who spent
her life bringing smiles to
the faces of others.
Margaret Bennet, known as
Mad Marg, was well known
for her antics as a clown
she performed at a variety of
school fetes, churches, and
kids parties in the Bacchus
Marsh area and up to Ballan,
also performing in street
parades.
She was married to Richard, and had three children.

Her funeral was held at
the Holy Trinity church in
Bacchus Marsh, with the
church over-flowing with
mourners.
Her performing partner of
35 years, Alan Beckensall,
spoke at the funeral.
Mr Beckensall remembered
Mrs Bennet as an outgoing
personality who loved entertaining children.
I would say it was time to
come home, and she would

say no it isnt. Theres still
some kids over there I
havent given a lolly to, or
whatever she was handing
out. She loved putting smiles
on the kids faces, Mr Beckensall said.
She loved her church, her
family, and her performing probably in that order.
She was very, very devoted
to her church.
Mrs Bennet passed away at
the age of 75.

a business that had its fences
cut with welders and tools
with an estimated value of
$80,000 stolen.
A report tabled at the 16
November council meeting
stated that eight streetlights
could be installed on the existing poles for $15,000.
The report recommended
the project be funded with
a special charge scheme for
the landowners, or through
councils Capital Improvements Program in the next
financial year - however Cr
Tatchell put forward a motion to fund the $15,000 out
of the Central Ward Reserve
Fund.
The quote came back very
reasonable. Hopefully this
will deter some of the things
that have been going on up
there, Cr Tatchell said.

It may not have been an act
of God, but light will now
be cast on two streets in the
Ballan Industrial Estate with
the hope of deterring further
acts of theft and burglary.
Owners of businesses, in
Smallmans Road and Haddon Drive, wrote to Central
Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell asking for help to install
lighting; while there are
power poles located within
the estate, there are no public streetlights.
Over the last several years
multiple businesses have
continuously
had
their
properties broken into and
numerous items with huge
amounts of value stolen,
read a letter signed by the
business owners requesting
the lights.
The list is an extensive one.
Most recently one business

has been broken into twice
in two weeks with perpetrators doing extensive
damage by cutting the security fencing in numerous
sections to gain access to the
property and removing multiple items ranging in value
from $100 - $5000.
One business had a forklift
and various tools stolen;
another, over the past 12
months, has had damage
done to the perimeter of his
property with his fencing
being cut for perpetrators to
gain access to the property
and had car parts and tyres
stolen.
The CFA storage shed has
had padlocks cut and damage done to the security door
from attempts to jemmy it
open; another business had
buildings broken into and
items stolen, with damage
to fences as they were cut to
gain access.

Western Water is warning people to be on

the lookout for illegal activity at reservoirs
and water supply tanks after security fences
were breached several times over the past
few months.
Entering a protected drinking water storage
area is illegal under the Safe Drinking Water
Act, with penalties as high as a $9,300 fine, or
six months imprisonment for a first offence.

quality of our drinking water is absolutely
critical.
Drinking water is a resource shared by
the whole community, and we would ask

anyone who sees someone illegally entering
a reservoir to contact us or the police.

drinking water, and we dont want anyone to
get injured or worse.
Mr Holt said drinking water storages,
including reservoirs and tanks, are
surrounded by fences and clearly marked

Any trespassers are likely to be captured
on CCTV and were looking to increase our
surveillance to ensure that anyone breaking
the law gets caught, Mr Holt said.

Over 150 bookworms from Ballan Primary

School have celebrated their success in the
Premiers Reading Challenge.
Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard
visited the school on Thursday (November
17) to present 163 young students with their
certificates.
Mr Howard said to qualify for the reading
challenge, participating students in prep
to Year two were required to read over 30
books in a six-month period.
Students in Years three to ten were required
to read 15 or more books.
Some students demonstrated their love of
reading by reading many more books, he
said.
Reading is a vital skill and the Premiers
Reading Challenge is a simple, effective way
for young Victorians to discover the joy of

a good book and establish life-long reading
habits.
Mr Howard congratulated the students

who had successfully completed this
years challenge and awarded them with
a certificate signed by the Premier and six
former Victorian Premiers.
Its great to see the enthusiasm that Ballan
Primary students have for taking up the
challenge to read more books which will
have long-term benefits for their learning in
the future, he said.
Well done to the teaching staff and parents
at Ballan Primary and all the participating
schools for supporting the Challenge.

facilities in
the shire?

The Moorabool Light Orchestra is returning
to Bacchus Marsh to help celebrate Christmas.
The annual Christmas concert will be held
on Sunday December 18 and will feature
one of Australias leading sopranos, Maxine
Montgomery.
Recreational activities are

important, but we need more
things for the kids in town.
Something different to entertain them.

We need an indoor swimming pool and shade sails

over the existing pool.

Maxine has been the recipient of a number

of impressive awards including the Robert
and Betty Salzer Award in 2004 and the
2009 Opera Foundation Vienna State Opera
Award.
This year, she has worked with BLOC Music

Theatre in Ballarat on the recent production of
The Drowsy Chaperone. Maxine performed
the title role whilst working as both choral
and assistant director.
Maxine will join more than 40 members
of the Moorabool Light Orchestra for the
Sounds of Christmas, which will include
a pleasant afternoon of Christmas music as
well as a segment showcasing Australian
Christmas carols and poetry from
Australiana Bush Poet Geoffrey W Graham.
The performance will be conducted and

directed by Barry Wilkins OAM, the
Moorabool Light Orchestras Musical
Director, and led by Robert Wrzaszcz,
with Frank Clark from Radio 3BA Ballarat
102.3FM as compere.

Sounds of Christmas will be held at the
Bacchus Marsh Public Hall. Admission is
just $20 and tickets available at the door from

They are so important, but

we need to have something
like a Youth Centre where
people can go and hangout. Maybe it could have
table tennis tables or billiard
tables.

important and they need to
be bigger and better. In the
shire, especially Ballan and
Gordon, the footy grounds
are out of date; they are too
small. They were built years
ago with limited funding.

thing I think needs improvement is the walking track
around the river in Ballan.
There is a footbridge in Ballan, but none down the Melbourne end.

Dont waste an opportunity

Moorabool households who
applied for a green waste
service have received their
bins ahead of Councils kerbside service to commence in
January next year.
The non-compulsory collection service will be available
to properties in urban areas
of Bacchus Marsh, Hopetoun
Park and Ballan.
Moorabool Shire Mayor
David Edwards said Council had received a great response from residents eligible for the service.
He said residents were who
had not yet applied were encouraged to sign up.
The service starts in January and we have more than
600 residents already in the
system to receive that first
green waste bin pick up, he
said.
The service forms part of

out the front of the shop for
children to send their wish
list off to the North Pole.

The cost of the service has
been set at $50 from January
to June 2017.
Annual costs are likely to be
$80 to $100 a year, applied to
the Annual Rate and Valuation Notice, plus the one off
cost of a new bin.
The cost is dependent on
take up rates - the more

residents that apply for a service, the more cost effective
the service will become.

completing a Waste Service

URBAN GREENWASTE SERVICE
Applications are still being taken for Councils new kerbside greenwaste collection to commence
next month - January 2017. Residents in Residential and Low Density Residential zoned areas
are eligible to receive the service. Delivery of bins/lids to those who have already applied has
started.
With approximately 15 to 20% of kerbside garbage being made up of organics, the service is part of
Moorabools strategy to reduce the amount of waste to landll. Further details about the service

POOL SAFETY: KNOW YOUR OBLIGATIONS

Moorabool Shire Council is reminding property owners that every private swimming pool or
spa capable of containing a depth of water exceeding 300mm requires a building permit prior
to its installation.
The building permit will specify that a childproof safety fence and gate must be built and approved
before the swimming pool or spa can be used. The importance of adequate and compliant
fencing around home pools and spas cannot be underestimated.
Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for children under 5 years of age in
Victoria. Pool fencing signicantly reduces the risk of drowning with research showing that the
risk of drowning in a fenced pool is about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool.
Our children need to be protected from such accidental drowning.
Safety Fence Tips
Maintain gates and fences regularly to ensure they comply with the Building Regulations.
Fit correct safety measures to gates, doors and windows.
Make sure no tree branches, pool pumps or pot plants etc are near the safety fence and be
sure that anything able to be climbed is not placed in a position where children could climb
to gain access to the pool or spa.
A safety fence is required if you have an inatable pool lled with water which is deeper than
300mm.
Position any chairs, boxes, pool pumps etc so that they cannot be used to climb the fence to
access the pool or spa.
Pool and Spa Regulations
It is law that swimming pools or spas on private residential properties in Victoria are provided
with safety fences to restrict access to the pool or spa.
Swimming pools that require safety fences: in-ground pools, above ground pools, hot tubs,
Jacuzzis and spas.
Any pool or spa fence, gate or door must be maintained in good working order.
All gates and doors providing access to a pool or spa must have self-closing and self-latching
devices and open away from the pool even pools and spas built before laws were introduced in
1991 to make fencing compulsory.
It is an offence to prop open any gate or door providing access to a pool or spa.
A building permit must be obtained prior to the installation of all pools and spas with a depth
greater than 300mm and for the safety barrier.
FINES
The Building Act 1993 contains penalties for pool owners who install a pool
or spa and fail to carry out work in accordance with the Act.

Watching the round baler

follow the rows of raked hay
over the weekend took me
back to a time when blisters
turned to calluses, and the
open walls of the hay shed
were closed in by the sweet
smell of a summer harvest.
There are few kids that
grew up in the bush that
didnt earn pocket money
sliding their hands under
the baling twine and thread
baring the thigh on a pair of
old jeans, hoisting the bales
above the knee for stacking.
Hay carting is and was hard
work, but many of lifes lessons have been taught either
throwing bales up onto the
tray of a J5 Bedford, or stacking them into the shed. The
characters were as colourful
as the language, and young
boys became men, or at
least until they went back to
school at summers end.
You could always tell the
city kid, when he turned up
wearing shorts; by smoko
he was wearing the farmers
oversized harvest pants tied

lamb roast.
It goes without saying that
the pick of the jobs during
the hay cart was driving
the truck. Most bush kids
learned to drive a Bedford,
or an old Inter before they
could reach the pedals.
Driving the hay truck didnt
take a lot of skill; put her in
first gear, dont run over the
bales, or the blokes lifting
them for that matter, and if
you hit the fence you would
be fixing it long after everyone else has knocked off for
the day.
Most of the crews I worked
with as a kid rotated through
the driving seat to give the
stackers a break and keep
the whole concern moving at
a steady pace. The only other
time you got a break was the
return journey to the hay
shed.
Whilst by todays standards
sitting 12ft high on a stack of
unstrapped hay bales with a
10 year-old driving the truck
standing up might appear

somewhat dangerous, it was

common place back in the
day and many a country kid
learned the values of hard
work on the back of a hay
truck.
Getting paid by the bale
taught young people the
harder they worked the
more they made, a concept
that seems to have been
filtered out as modern machinery has replaced those
hands-on jobs of the past.
Even in the early days of
hay carting as innovation replaced manpower, the simple fitting of a hay loader to
the side of a truck meant one
less person on the ground.
Lifting the bales from the
field onto the back of the
truck was probably one of
the most practical tools of
the day.
It was a simple machine that
scooped up the hay bales on
to an elevator driven by its
own wheels; you could basically cart hay with two people, a driver and a stacker,
with the speed determined
by whoever was driving the
truck. I am sure all those old

hay trucks had dents in the
roof from the stacker banging on the roof or the odd
wayward bale toppling over
the cabin.
But on a good day, two people and a hay-loader could
run 1000-1200 bales into the
shed give or take a hernia
and a trip to the chiropractor. I still reckon stacking
them in the shed was harder
than loading them; a corrugated iron roof when the
mercury starts to rise would
make an Eskimo break into
a sweat, especially near the
end of the job when the stack
gets closer to the roof.
Even the hay-baler has come
a long way since becoming a
stationary press that sat in
the barn, to a mobile fodder
factory, albeit reasonably agricultural; pardon the pun.
You could imagine the
farmers relief when the
bales could be pressed in
the field, and stacked neatly
in the shed. Whilst there is a
bit of conjecture about when
the first mechanical hay-
baler graced the fields, its

believed to be in the late 20s
when a practical machine
took over the task.
Back then they could bale
about 70 an hour on a good
day; practically nothing
by todays standards, and
I would imagine it would
have been about as reliable
as a three wheeled billy-cart
going uphill.
Watching the process today, where hay baling and
carting is a one person operation, the big round and
square bales have all but replaced the baby bales of the
past, and the heavy lifting is
all done by one machine that
simply changes implements
for cutting, raking, baling
and lifting on and off the
truck.
Whilst the number of small
bales in a big bale varies depending who you speak to,
and what weight they come
in at, its fair to say I loaded
the equivalent of 450-500
bales on a semi-trailer on the
weekend in under two hours
and didnt raise a sweat; I
even strapped them down.

But as I was sitting down
on the veranda drinking my
espresso coffee looking out
at my handy-work with not
much to admire, I pondered
on what the young people of
today have missed out on.
Those school holidays carting hay burned up enough
energy to keep me out of
trouble; I learned the harder
I work the more I will get
paid. I learned that making
hay whilst the sun shone
would see people through
the darkness of winter, and
I learned that working with
people rather than against
them would always get the
job done.
Maybe this Country needs
to slow down. Working
people can help carry the
load of those that cant work;
the satisfaction of a job well
done can only be achieved
if you have a job in the first
place.
One of the few lessons my
late Father taught me was
that easy things are easy to
do, and too soon forgotten.

Annual Awards Evening

Tanker Nissan Patrol.

annual awards evening
Member for Macedon MaryAnne Thomas handed over
the keys for the new tanker,
with the State government
providing $94,667 and the brigade contributing $17,333.
Not bad for a town with a population of only 400, Ms
Thomas said.
The historic gold mining town has long been protected
by this fire brigade and Blackwood residents live in one of
the top three bushfire prone areas. Blackwood is specially
challenged.
I have no doubt the community hold the CFA and volunteers
efforts in high regard. The importance of this community
is not to become complacent, and this community takes
responsibility for itself.
Ms Thomas said the new state-of-the-art vehicle would
help Blackwoods brigade members continue their incredible
tradition of community service.
Three members were presented with Service Awards, Ross
Hall (10 years), Lloyd Henderson (15 years) and Ken Whiffin
(25 years).
Six National Medals were presented to: Gary Amy, Lloyd
Henderson, Thomas Pywell, Ian Stewart (40 years), George
Stockdale (60 years) and Ken Whiffin.
Alen Slijepcevic, CFA Deputy Chief Officer and Brad
Boatman (Operations Manager District 15) presented Thomas
Pywell with a Commendation of Service.
Mr Boatman said Tom Pywell received the award in
recognition of his courage.
Upon arrival on scene of an extremely bad accident in
Greendale, he quickly ascertained the condition of the
injured occupants and had the initiative to stay close to the
vehicle to provide constant verbal contact and comfort, with
the severely injured passenger.
Tom upheld the highest ideals of the CFA putting sanctity of
life before his own discomfort in exceptional circumstances.
Mr Pywell said it is just what you do in a situation we are
given.
The life skills and training I have developed over the years
enabled me to do that on the day.

Victoria, I would like to sincerely thank the community
of Moorabool for supporting
the recent Moorabool Relay
For Life.
More than 160 Relayed on
Saturday 26 Sunday 27 November in 12 teams, walking
overnight to show that Hope
Lives in Moorabool for those
experiencing cancer.
During the overnight Relay,
there was laughter, tears and
no doubt, a few sore feet. But
the strength shown by local Moorabool community
members was a public dis-
play of support for anyone

with a cancer experience.
So far, over $32,000 has been
raised by Moorabool Relayers, which will help fund
Cancer Council Victorias
support, prevention and research programs.
The money raised at Moorabool Relay For Life will help
Cancer Council Victoria continue to provide programs.
A particular focus this
year is on improving bowelscreening rates, with the
latest statistic showing that
only 38.1% of eligible people
in the Shire of Moorabool
participate. We recommend
WHATS ON
bowel screening every two

years between the ages of 50
and 74.

continue the fight against

The Bushfire and Natural
Hazards Cooperative Research Centre have released
an updated bushfire outlook and things are looking
worse for Victoria than earlier predicted.
Communities in almost
all of Western and Central
Victoria now face an above
average risk of bushfire this
summer.
Heavy rainfall throughout
the year has led to very high
fire fuel loads across the
state.
Now that December has arrived conditions are expected to get hotter and much
dryer. This is the perfect
storm of conditions in which
large fire events can occur
across our region.
We know that local communities are under threat
and yet inexplicably State
Premier Daniel Andrews

refuses to reverse his ridiculous decision to take our firefighting Skycrane helicopter
from Ballarat and place it in
Moorabbin.
We need to send a strong
message to Daniel Andrews
that we must keep our Skycrane in Ballarat to protect
Western Victoria.

The REIVs September
quarter figures show twobedroom houses in regional
Victoria are providing the
states highest gross rental
yields, at 5.3 per cent. With
a median price of $245,000,
this property type has recorded solid rental growth
in the past year, up two per
cent rental to a weekly me-

This is good news for investors in regional areas as
the rental yield that is, the

price - is vital for financial
planning. The ideal combination is a low purchase

Three-bedroom

regional investors, with a

An unbeaten century to
opener Lachie Herring has
the Darley Lions in the box
seat after the first week of
their Ballarat Cricket Association First XI match against
last years Grand Finalists
Brown Hill.
Herring carried his bat
through the Darley innings
to score an impressive 134
as Darley finished the day
on 8/291 at Darley Park in
the Lions last First XI match
before the Christmas break.
Herring received great
support from middle order
batsmen Hasitha Wickramasinghe (36) and Matt Cape,
who made 60 at better than
a run a ball with seven fours
and two sixes as part of a
121 run partnership with
Herring, whos 134 came
from 239 balls with just ten
boundaries.
Darleys Second XI let their
game against Buninyong get
away from them, with the
Bunnies scoring 5/345 off
their allotted 80 overs.
The Lions were looking
good with the score at 5/115,
with Ben Longhurst and
Craig McDonald having
snared two wickets each,
but that would be as many
as they would get as Buninyong batsmen Michael Flynn
and Darcy Tasker batted the
day out, both making centuries as part of an unbeaten
230-run partnership for the
seventh wicket, giving the
Lions a massive score to try
and chase down next week.
Things are looking similarly glum for Darleys Third
XI, who were dismissed for
125 in their game against
Brown Hill at the Hub, with
the Bulls just ten runs away
from victory on 3/115 at the
end of the first days play.
Only opener Bryce Galea
(49) and Clint Salisbury (26)
could have any luck against
the Brown Hill bowlers, who
made short work of the Lions
middle and lower order after
Darley had worked their
way to 2/85 before Salisbury
was dismissed.
In return, the Bulls knocked
off all but ten runs of their
chase inside 28 overs despite Lions captain Liam
Jordan taking two top-order
wickets.

Darleys way when opening
bowler Tyler Cox dismissed

first over of the day, but from
there Wendouree were able
to build partnerships in the
heart of their batting order
to ensure the Darley batsmen had some work to do in
order to claim their first victory of the season next week.
Cox ended the day as the Lions most successful bowler,
with figures of 2/23 from
his eight overs, with fellow
opener Mitch Ward, Corey
Beaton and Liam Monaghan
claiming the remaining
wickets.

After winning the toss and
sending the home side in,
Darley were able to contain
Wendouree White to 7/98
from their 25 overs, never allowing the Wendouree batsmen to establish themselves
at the crease. The Lions
bowlers shared the wickets,
with Ryan Densley claiming
two wickets and Ben Taylor, Noah Simmons, Austin
MacBeth, Hayden Nash and
Jaylan Altay each taking a
wicket.
In reply, Darley sit on 3/148
after their 25 overs, with
Jaylan Altay scoring an impressive half-century before
retiring, and Hayden Nash
and Lane Havelberg both
scoring 25 to leave the Lions
in a strong position, and
will be hoping to claim the
remaining three Wendouree
wickets early next Saturday
without the Red Caps passing their score.

bowled first and had Mt
Clear on the ropes at 4/54
after 18 overs, but a late partnership of 53 in the final 7
overs saw Mt Clear at 4/107
at the half way mark. The
best of the Darley bowlers

with 2/15. Darley got off to a
great start with openers Aaron Cadman (50 retired) and
Luke Hayward (18) putting
on 87 for the opening stand,
before late wickets brought
Mt Clear right back in the
game. At stumps Darley

just in front.

the team, Johnny Horan took 2 great catches. Vincent
Weatherhead led some excellent bowling with 2 /0, Daniel

led by opening pair of Matt Golding and Mackenzie Popple
with a 62 run partnership before being retired. All batters got
off to good starts with Daniel Pascoe making 55 before being
compulsory retired.

Bill Hawkens rink led the assault by continuing with their
good form, to draw away from their opposition to record
a 10-shot win. Steve Sullivans rink continued the trend to
record its first rink win of the season with a 6-shot win, with
Charlie Grants rink scoring 4 shots on the last end to record
a 2-shot win. These collective 18 shots covered the rink of Ben
Gould that went down by 10 shots, after establishing an early
lead but losing 9 of the last 10 ends.

Division 2 v Daylesford
Despite Peter Thistlethwaites rink bouncing back from a
bad loss last week, to record an 8 shot win, and Bob Delaneys
rink which was playing catch-up bowls for most of the day
before gaining 7 shots on the last 3 rounds to salvage a
draw, Avenue did not seriously challenge Daylesford on the
composite scoreboard.
Peter Glass rink went missing after the tea break when
they led 15-9, to only win 3 ends for the remainder of the
game, eventually losing by 8 shots. New skip Alan Bensons
rink had a day to forget with the opposition scoring 21 shots
before Avenue opened their account, ultimately going down
by 34 shots.
Final score Avenue 87 lost Daylesford 121.
Division 5 v Central Wendouree
Being ladder leaders Avenue faced a danger game against
second placed Central Wendouree (away). With Mike Roberts
rink maintaining their winning vein with a 6-shot win, and
the returning Dave McKendricks rink scoring an 11 shot win
it wasnt enough to cover a rare loss by Di Hardiments rink
(13 shots) and Ray Humphreys rink (13 shots) for Avenue to
go down by 9 shots overall.
The win still keeps Avenue inside the top 4, but the side
needs to keep winning to ensure they stay there.
Final score Avenue 87 lost Central Wendouree 96.
Division 7 v Waubra
Against ladder leaders Waubra this week, Avenue lost all
four rinks. Only Stan Cummings rink had a real struggle
ultimately going down by 15 shots. Despite the loss, Avenue
still sit in third place on the ladder and face a must win game
against Daylesford next week.

Competition commenced after the presentations with Kiara Ive recording 6 Personal Best
(PB) results. 12 athletes produced 5PBs while 173 of the 189 athletes in attendance obtained at
least one PB. Nelson Banigo broke another long-standing Centre record, running 10.99 secs
for the Under 8 60m Hurdles, breaking a 34 year old record. Keely Rich (Dolphins) also set
a new record in the Under 15 Javelin, throwing 21.52 metres, to break her previous record.
