UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

-

Addition can be achieved through counting and other processes.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
- Given unsolved equations, the student will be able to add properly with
90% accuracy.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
- 3. Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. Examples: If 8 + 3 =
11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2
+ 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12.
(Associative property of addition.) (Students need not use formal terms for these
properties.)
- 5. Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
MATERIALS:
- Projector/smartboard
- Addition handout
- Internet Explorer
- Pirate Addition video: https://youtu.be/WT_wvvEvkw4
- Add em Up video: https://youtu.be/INHYb1RNaMM
- ToonDoo website: http://www.toondoo.com/
- Printer/printer paper
- Computer lab
BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE:
- The student will demonstrate a clear understanding of addition.
- After this lesson, students will be able to add efficiently.
- I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the
objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in
this course and are not part of this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

- Introduction: The teacher will begin the class with a review over what
the class previously learned about addition. After the short review the
teacher will show two short videos about addition. (5 mins)
- The teacher will play the Add em Up video (3:19 mins)
- After the Add em Up video, the teacher will then play the Pirate
Addition video (4:00 mins)
- After the videos, the teacher will ask the class what they have learned
from the videos and lead a class discussion. (7 mins)
- After the video and class discussion, the teacher will pass out the
addition handout. The teacher will then ask the students Do you
have any questions about what you need to do? (2 mins)
- After answering any questions, the teacher will have the students work
in small groups of four to work on the handout together. (5 mins)
- After the students complete the question and answer handouts, the
teacher will collect them for later assessment. The teacher will explain
to the students that they will make a comic showing the addition
process. Ok class, after watching the videos about addition,
and answering your questions, you should be able to make a
comic about addition. (3 mins)
- Procedures: After the introduction TTW explain to the students that
they will go to the computer lab and they will create a comic of the
addition process. (5 mins)
- Before transitioning to the computer lab, the teacher will state that
they will be using ToonDoo to make their comics. (1 min)
- As a review, the teacher will model how to use ToonDoo using the
interactive whiteboard. The teacher will ask the students Do you
have any questions about using ToonDoo? The teacher will ask
the students Do you have any questions about addition? (5
mins)
- After the teacher answers all questions, the students will transition to
the computer lab. The students will be instructed to apply their
knowledge of addition by making a comic that shows the process of
addition. (30 mins)
- The teacher will assist students with learning needs or disablitities.
- When the assignment is complete, the students will be asked to save
their comics on ToonDoo (The teacher will model how to do this). (2
mins)
- The teacher will instruct the students to pair up with the partner next
to them and have the students compare their comics discussing the
similarities and differences. (5 mins)

Closure: After the students have finished their discussion and

comparing their comics, the teacher will instruct the students to print a
copy of their comic and turn them in for teacher assessment.

MODIFICATIONS:
- I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the
objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in
this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
