The role of Science and Technology in International Security

Technology is a big part of todays world. It can be a good thing and a bad
thing. The use of drones by Countries has provoked a lot of controversy. They are
used for both surveillance and military strikes. Southwest Asia uses drones to gather
intelligence on suspect terrorist groups. Others such as Latin America use them to
help combat drug trafficking and deforestation. The part that makes this
controversial is the idea and legality of a country using drones to spy on another.
It is very understandable to why this is such an issue. The U.S has carried out more
than 400 drone strikes on suspected militant targets in Pakistan alone and 90% of
the victims from the drone attacks were not the intended targets.
Another topic of issue is chemical weapons. This is something that my
country is surely a part of. In the Syrian civil war, chemical weapons attacks are alleged to

have been carried out by the Islamic State, Bashar al-Assads forces, and rebel groups. Over the
last 5 years over 1,500 people have been killed in my country due to the use of these chemical
weapons.
In the past for the drone subject the UN General assembly passed a
resolution calling on the US to comply with international law and respect human
rights in regards to the drone strikes. For chemical weapons , the UN passed the UN
Chemical Weapons Convention in 1992. It has been signed and ratified by 192
countries.
These two topics directly relate to Syria because of all of the conflict that has
been going on lately. The US has been using drones for attacks and surveillance.
The military spokespeople have refused to give details bout which aircraft is
undertaking the strikes and which arent. This goes back to what was said before
about the dangers of using these drones. As stated earlier, most of the time 90% of
the victims arent the intended targets. That means innocent civilians of Syria have
been dying or injured. Though these attacks are meant for ISIS, they are not being
effective. There has not been any real cases of Syria using drones but Syrian allies
( Russia & Iran) have begun unleashing suicide drones that land and explode, to
help Syria with the rebel problem that they are having.
Chemical weapons play a very large part in Syria. Use of chemical weapons in
Syria has been confirmed by the UN. The most deadly attacks were the Ghouta
attack in the suburbs of Damascus that was in 2013 and the Khan al-Assal attack in
the suburbs of Aleppo also in 2013. Even with the past UN action to help stop the
use and production of chemical weapons, Syria is still producing and using them.
Syria presents the following resolutions:

Researching where chemical weapons are still being manufactured and targeting
possible black market sales of chemical weapons
An agreement on detailed guidelines on the rights of suspected terrorists and the
use of drone attacks
