Education is something many people strive to receive so it is our responsibilities
as teachers to provide the best for our children. People around the world may not
receive a great education, or an education at all, and yet, they still try to receive one.
Education is something we should not take for granted so teachers need to make sure
that it is given to the children as best as possible to be able to work in the real world.
As teachers, we need to be able to teach our students important aspects so that
when they grow older, they are able to care not only for themselves, but for the younger
generations. Students will need to be able to financially run the country and not only
think of themselves, but for the other people they are caring for. Students need to be
able to think critically, smart, analyze information and go beyond the surface. In order to
do so, we must figure out what it is we want the children to learn and what will help
them in the future. Wilson and Peterson (2006) discussed what they thought was
knowledge and what students should learn and said that students need to help develop
flexible understanding, including both basic factual and conceptual knowledge, and
must know how to use that knowledge critically (p. 107). Students will be able to strive
and reach for something beyond their expectations with their knowledge and
information.
In order to be a great teacher, teachers must know and understand that children
learn at different speeds and in different ways. No two children are the same. As a
teacher, I must understand that one specific teaching method may work with most
students but there may be a select few who do not learn that way. I need to be flexible
in the ways that I teach and understand the different types of theories that are used in
classrooms. It is necessary to incorporate essentialism and progressivism into my

classroom. By focusing on the child rather than the curriculum will allow the student
grow into a more educated student. It allows students to look for the answers, to think
critically and on their own to solve the answers rather than telling them one way to
solving them. This will help the students in life because in college and in the work place,
they will not be handed one type of problem or answer that can be solved easily-they
will have to think and solve it on their own. Preparing them for real world scenarios will
help them flourish in life. Essentialism comes into play because of the belief that there is
a standard of information that students need to know in order to do well in life. By
realizing that curriculum is always changing, it allows me, as a teacher, to focus on the
most important parts of it so that the students are getting the basics as well as the
always changing information needed in the classroom.
There are many different ways in which children learn and ideas of how teachers
should manage their classroom. Students must understand that if another classmate
answers the question wrong, there is nothing wrong with that and they will not be made
fun of for doing so. Being able to have a classroom where the students feel safe is
extremely important. I can recall when I was too nervous to answer any questions out
loud for the fear of being made fun of. Once the students feel like they are safe and
understand that they will not be picked on for having the wrong answer, learning will
happen. I think that students should be able to work in groups and discuss with one
another. That will allow them to find their own mistakes and see how another student did
their problems and if they solved it a different way. There also needs to be open
communication between the teacher and the students. Students need to understand
that they are able to ask questions if they do not understand something and the teacher

needs to be willing to answer the question with enough information. I also think that
students need to be rewarded when they do good deeds as individuals and as a group.
One way that the students can be rewarded is by a marble jar and for each good thing
they do as a group or individually, a marble goes into the jar. Once the jar is filled, they
receive a reward.
When teaching, we will be faced with students from all over the world with
different cultures and beliefs. In order to make sure that all students are treated fairly,
we must ensure that equality is given to each and every one of the students. I believe
that the classroom should be welcoming to all of the students, regardless of race,
ethnicity, disabilities and the children differences. I want to make sure my students feel
safe and understand that my classroom is a safe place for them. In addition, each
student may be in the same grade level but that does not mean that each is up to par
with what they need to know so I will make sure never to assume that they know certain
information.
Making sure the information being presented to the children is accurate is
extremely important. I believe that students need to work with others at times as well as
work individually. In addition, the way I present my information needs to vary. As Wilson
and Peterson said, it proves far more tractable when individuals learn by doing;
that is, when they are solving authentic problems situated in meaningful contexts (p. 5).
Not all students learn by visually seeing it or being told the information. I need to make
sure the students who are hands-on are able to do hands-on work. I will need to make
sure that I teach to each type of learning style, that is, auditory, visual and kinesthetic.

I believe it is important for teachers to be constantly researching new ways for
activates that they can do with their students. Brandsford, Darling-Hammond and
LePage (2005) discussed how if teachers take many courses within their subject matter,
they were more qualified at teaching their students. In addition to researching new
effective techniques, teachers must have a welcoming personality and must be devoted
to their students. I believe it is important for teachers to have an upbeat personality
because it allows the students to be eager to go to class, and want to learn. The
personality of the teacher will reflect on the entire classroom and be a positive
reinforcement for the students.
Teachers have a duty to make sure that their students have a great education to
go far in life. Teachers are constantly learning and growing to ensure their students
learn to their best abilities and making sure that their classroom is safe for them. We
must always think of our students and that they are always first on our list to ensure
they receive great education. To do so, we as teachers need to find new ways and
different techniques to teach the material in the best way possible for our students.
