EMShip: Report of Service Boat Group B1 Barbarossa Design Office

1 Introduction
The client contacted our company on 04/10/2016 for the acquisition of a port service boat normally used
to join ferries, car ferries and pilot boats. The main purpose of these vessels is to support larger ships by
transporting people and supplies from port to them.
The client demanded some requirements as presented on Table 1.

The vessel was to be designed so that it reaches 20kn of speed with 80% of its power, while having an
operating range of at least 10 hours as mentioned.

The steps in Figure 1 will be performed in order to estimate the initial values for parameters.

1.1 Design spiral

For the design process, the ship designer needs to consider all the constraints and relate them to the
technical data, the operational conditions and the economic aspects in order to achieve an agreement
between what the shipyard can offer and what the costumer desires.
The stages of design names can slightly change depending on the author but they in general follow the
same schematic as described below:

The requirements were defined by the client, afterwards the group made a regression analysis from
similar ships in order to estimate the breadth and length, henceforward the group went to the third stage,
which consists in find one concept design. For this part, similar port services boats were found in different
shipyards as reference and benchmark. These results found are considered only the first approach and
they need to be optimized. This process is known as design spiral is widespread among ship design.
Below is possible to find from Figure 3 how this process works.

1.2 Regression Analysis

Following the clients requirements, 9 port services boats with similar dimensions and characteristics
were found in order to perform a regression analysis to find an initial value for breadth and length.

Length
Figure 3 - Breadth/Length curve

From Table 2 it is possible to notice a variation of the length from 17 to 20m. The capacities of the
similar ships vary from 12 to 40 people. In our boat, the crew and passengers are in total 12 people, for
this reason the group has chosen the minimum value (18m length) proposed by the client.

EMShip: Report of Service Boat Group B1 Barbarossa Design Office

The speed of 20 knots is considered relatively high, lowering the breadth would be beneficial for the
speed of the ship and its stability would remain acceptable.
From Figure 1, the breadth should be 5.4m, however after showing the first general arrangement to the
client, some remarks were pointed out and the breadth of 5.2m was selected by the group.

1.4 Hull type

Based on the boats speed and length, the Froude number will be in the range from 0.5 to 1 as presented
in the equation below, thence the hull can be classified as a semi-displacement.

20

10.3/

= (0.78)

The semi-displacement hull provides a stable, smooth ride by plowing through waves. The main reason
for choosing this hull shape is the ability of the hull to run at acceptable speeds with minimum required
power.

1.5 Anchoring equipment

According to B.V Rules for Ships less than 65m, Section 5, Article 3, ships having length smaller than 30
meters should have one anchor.

1.6 General Arrangement

The general arrangement of a port service boat is the organization of the owners requirements with the
naval architects ideas. Please see the General Arrangement attached in pdf file.

1.6.1 Main Deck

A crane was designed in the aft part of the ship in order to move provisions and spare parts from port to
the boat faster. Stability and structure calculations were not performed yet, therefore the capacity of the
crane is not decided.
The wheel house was designed to accommodate all the passengers and crew, for safety reasons one
stretcher place was reserved to transport any injured people. There are windows in the ceiling to facilitate
the pilots vision when approaching larger ships. Rail guards were placed around the wheel house to
provide security to the crew when they work in the main deck. One raft boat was positioned in the fore
part to assist in rescue situations.

1.6.2 Lower Deck

The steering gear room was positioned in the aft part of the lower deck, the hydraulic power unit and tank
for the crane were also placed in this room, the access to this compartment is provided from a steering
gear access hatch.
The engine room has the standard equipment such as switchboard, two engines, service batteries,
emergency bilge pump, generator sea water pump, main distribution panel, engine batteries and others.
In the middle part of lower deck is possible to access the galley, a store for keeping provisions and also
the W.C. There is a bench in the galley which accommodates four people seated, just above the bench a

polyvinyl chloride hatch is positioned in order to work as an emergency exit and to provide some light to
the galley. Fore pick access hatch and bilge pump are placed in the fore compartment.

1.6.3 Tank Plan

A 1000 liters tank of fresh water was required by the client, which is positioned between section 17 to
20. The bilge and sewage tanks both have 700 liters capacity. There are two fuel tanks with 2000 liters
capacity.
