Map to ATC and Licensure
Introduction
In order to be admitted to candidacy and receive my teaching license, I must follow a set
of guidelines and fulfill certain requirements. In order to do so efficiently, I will create a personal
map that will help me plan out my time and keep track of my progress. This is an extremely
important step in order to ensure the completion of all of the requirements to reach admission to
candidacy (ATC) and licensure. Because I switched into the English Teaching Education
concentration at the end of second semester of my freshman year, I have only just started the
steps to complete this process. The reason I changed my concentration from Literature to
Secondary Education is because I want to pursue a career as a professor of English and thought it
appropriate and beneficial to have training and a background in education.
Map and Plan
There are two different classifications of requirements to meet in order to reach ATC:
College of Education requirements and accreditation requirements. The former includes reaching
junior status (45 credit hours), completing the two math GEP requirements, and successfully
completing ED 204 (Introduction to Teaching) and its counterpart ECI 204. The latter includes
maintaining an overall GPA of at least 2.75 and satisfying exemption from all three parts of the
Praxis CORE. The remaining steps in receiving my teaching license is to successfully pass my
edTPA, do well in my student teaching, and obtain my Certificate of Capacity. By the end of this

semester, I will have fulfilled the requirement for my ED 204 and ECI 204 courses. At the end of
my sophomore year, I will hopefully have surpassed the required number of credit hours and
reached junior status. This only leaves my two math credits, which I plan on finishing by second
semester of my junior year. Along with these GEPs, I need to complete certain English and
Education core classes in order to satisfy all of my requirements (reference table below). If I
complete all of these steps, I will successfully reach ATC and licensure.

McBride 3
If I am successful in completing all of the steps to ATC and obtain my teaching license,
then I will have many different paths I could take for my career. As mentioned above, I would
love to pursue higher degrees in order to teach English at the college level, but with my teaching
license, I could work for a couple of years before going back to school to save money and have
experience in the classroom. Whether or not I decide to pursue the idea of being a professor in
the United Kingdom, Bible translator, or remain a High School English teacher, my degree and
experience will be beneficial to whichever path I choose.
One of the roadblocks that might come up in the future is the fact that I am planning on
studying abroad in the spring, which would mean that I might not be able to take a math credit
until first semester of my junior year, which would push my schedule back by a semester. If this
becomes an issue, then I can plan on taking some courses over the summer. I am sure that no
matter what issue comes up along the way, I will be able to seek help from many different
individuals in the School of Education who may be of help. With that being said, this map and
plan is a resource that I see myself using throughout my time here at NC State before I am
admitted to candidacy and licensed to teach in North Carolina. I will be able to look back at my
progress and see what exact steps I need to work on next and determine where to put my
attention to ensure admittance and licensure.
