III SEM. B.E. (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING) DEGREE END SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2010
SUBJECT: KINEMATICS OF MACHINERY (MEE-205)

REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM

( 7 /12 / 2010)
Time: 3 Hours.

Max.Marks: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions.
Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed.
1A

1B

Differentiate between the following terms.

i. Completely constrained and successfully constrained motion
ii. Lower pair and higher pair
iii. Four bar chain and double slider crank chain
iv. Machine and Mechanism.
With a neat sketch explain the Whitworth Quick Return motion mechanism
suitable for a shaper. Why it is called Quick Return mechanism? Show how
the ratio of time taken for the two strokes is determined.

04

Figure shows a Toggle mechanism in which the crank OA rotates at 120 rpm
in clockwise direction and is subjected to an angular acceleration of 20
rad/sec2.

06

The lengths of links are shown along the links. All dimensions are in mm.
Determine the linear velocity and linear acceleration of slider D and angular
velocity and angular acceleration of link BD.

a) Involute function.
b) Pressure angle
c) Pitch circle diameter of a gear.
d) Diametral pitch.
Two gear wheels mesh externally and have a gear ratio of 3. The number of
teeth on larger wheel is 57. Module of both gears is equal to 6 mm and a
standard addendum of one module is recommended for both the gears.
Pressure angle is 200. Find the contact ratio of the teeth.

04

Derive an expression to find the center distance between two spiral gears in
mesh.
In an epicyclic gear shown in Figure below, the pitch circle diameter of the
annulus A is to be approximately 324 mm and the module is 6 mm. When the
annulus is stationary, the three-armed spider makes one revolution for every
five revolutions of the wheel S. Find the number of teeth for all the wheels and
exact pitch circle diameter of the annulus. If a torque of 30 Nm. is applied to
the shaft carrying S, determine the fixing torque of the annulus.

State and prove Arnold Kennedys theorem.

Synthesize a four-bar mechanism to generate a function y = sin (x) for 0 < x

< 90 for the input range of = 120 and the output range of = 60 for
three precision points. Use the Freudenstein's Equation to determine the
dimensions of all the links. Take initial crank angles 0 = 300 and 0 = 600 .

A rope drive is required to transmit 230 kW from a pulley of 1 meter

diameter running at 450 rpm. The safe pull in each rope is 800 N and
the mass of the rope is 0.46 kg per meter length. The angle of lap and
groove angle are 1600 and 45 0 respectively. If the coefficient of friction
between the rope and pulley is 0.3, find the number of ropes required.
A collared shaft rotating at 150 rpm carries an end thrust of 50 KN. It has an
outside radius of 250 mm and an inner radius of 150 mm. If power lost due to
friction is not to exceed 2 kw, find the coefficient of friction between the
collar and the bearing.
A single plate clutch with both sides of the plate being effective is used to
transmit power at 1400 rpm. It has outer and inner radii 80 mm and 60 mm
respectively. The maximum intensity of pressure is limited to 10 104 N/m2 .
If the coefficient of friction is 0.3, determine:
i. Total force exerted on the plate, ii. Power transmitted.
