Grade One Unit Plan

Remembrance, Peace, Love, and Friendship November 2016 7 classes

Generative Topic: As the students in grade one begin to learn the specific
elements of music such as rhythm and notes, it becomes crucial to have and
understanding of why - why we make music. So whereas the technical aspects
of this unit build on what has been taught to generate a complete knowledge of
music. The real purpose of this unit is to help students understand why we
make music. Building on the themes of the season such as remembrance and
peace for Remembrance day in early November. Then after exploring some of
the more somber themes in music, we will build through the themes of love and
friendship as we move towards the joy of the winter celebrations.
Unit Title: Remembrance, Peace, Love and Friendship
Big Idea: Why we make music and organizing rhythm and notes.
Essential Questions:

1. Why do we make music and how can it express our feelings?


2. How can we begin to use beat to organize rhythm into smaller chunks?
3. How can we organize and notate melodies with more than two notes?
