General Responsibilities + Labs and Equipment

6

In the last 5 minutes of lessons every teacher must check:

- All equipment used is cleaned and returned to the shelves/cupboards
- Text books and booked equipment are counted back
- check the sinks (make sure no matches or rubbish is left here)
- make sure side benches, students desks and teachers desk are clear
- the whiteboard has been wiped down
- the lab is ready for another teacher to use without have to move your
stuff out of the way
Photocopying: We are a large department and have a
substantial photocopying budget. However, please refrain from making
unnecessary copies of resources that are already available to students
through electronic means or in their workbooks. A monthly rundown of
your copying is available on request. Check with GLY if in doubt.
Ordering/ purchasing all orders must go through GLY.
Orders placed without consultation will need to be paid for personally.
Lab equipment - Each lab is colour coded, same as its
door and has its own supply and layout of most everyday equipment
and chemicals e.g. Bunsens and associated bits, test tubes and
associated equipment, beakers, flasks, thermometers, measuring
cylinders, common chemicals - including test solutions, 1mol/L HCl,
1mol/L H2SO4 and 1mol/L NaOH solutions (note: not limewater as this
needs to be made freshly to be effective). MSDS sheets for all bench
chemicals are available in every lab. Please make the time to locate
these in your teaching spaces and familiarise yourself with the safety
information.
Cleaning of lab equipment - please ensure your class
leaves glassware clean after an experiment. There are bottle brushes in
every lab.
A list of equipment that should be in every lab can be found
in Science Department drive > lab inventories
Book any equipment not normally found in the lab with
Leanne. Bookings must be made with at least 24 hours notice in
Science department drive > Booking sheets. See booking resources
p9.
Make yourself familiar with the layout of the labs you are
teaching in. Please let the teacher in charge of the lab and Leanne
know if anything gets broken (fill in the yellow damages inventory in
each lab), needs refilling or replacing. Please ensure that any
equipment and resource used by you and your class is returned to its
7

correct place at the end of the lesson, and that the lab is left in a safe
and tidy condition.
We cannot leave many experiments on the benches long
term because of the number of different classes that have to use each
lab.
If you want to leave equipment out, please check with the
teacher in charge of the lab where the best place to leave it.
Please feel free to display student work on lab walls,
ensuring that you check with the teacher in charge of the lab first.
Corridor walls are also available for display of student work.
Students should not be in the labs before school, at
form time, interval, lunchtime or after school without the
supervision of a teacher.
Accidents happen and if equipment is broken in class
please fill out the yellow breakages sheet so it is replaced. Charge
students for broken equipment if they have not followed the lab rules or
instructions. Check the cost with Leanne. If necessary there is a note
that can be sent home to parents - see GLY if you need one.
All labs must be locked if there is no teacher present.
Email: Please make an effort to check for emails daily, both
DL Science and DL Staff.
Office printers T52 and T44 have networked printers for
staff use. Please do not use these to print class sets of work this
uses too much toner. Only use new paper in printers, not recycled
paper. Reams of paper and printer cartridges are available from
reprographics remember to use the red book.
Staff guidelines and procedures google docs please
take the time to familiarise yourself with the contents of this folder.

Finding Schemes, Unit Plans, Assessments and Marking

Schedules
Schemes and Unit Plans.
Electronic copies:
-Junior and general Science: The schemes for all year levels are kept in the
topic folders in Science department google drive.
-Senior Subjects eg Biology: Science department drive > Senior Biology
> Level 2 Biology. If you find you cannot access any folders you should
have access to see GLY or the TiC of that level.
The TiCs for each year level will advise of any changes to the
schemes.
Note the schemes are suggestions and examples of how to teach the unit they
do not need to be followed exactly. The assessments are based on the student
learning objectives ensure that all the points listed on these are covered for each
unit. Do not change a common assessment task or its assessment schedule
without checking with the TiC first.
Assessments:
Electronic copies: The assessments for juniors and general
Science are on Science department google drive.
Senior subjects The TiC will provide you with a copy of the end
of topic test and marking schedule.
Hard copies: Question sheets for junior assessments will be
found in T44, in the tote tray rack by the window, before a test. TiCs will
usually make copies of the assessment and/or answer booklets although
sometimes you must make your own copies of the write on answer sheets
from the master copies.. See TiCs for details.
Answer schedules for senior assessments will be posted to
WGC4me where appropriate.
Do not hand back assessments until the TiC has given the all
clear, as there will be some students and/ or classes still to catch up.
Storing of Assessments
Please collect and file all junior end of topic tests back in after
marking as all classes sit the same tests. Please do not return to the students
at the end of the year.
Collect senior end of topic tests back and store until advised they
can be returned (usually just before school examinations).
NCEA internal assessments are put in alphabetical order for your
class with a cover sheet of the grades, with the check-marked students
highlighted. TiCs will store these in labelled boxes in the hall cupboard on
right of lift on 3rd floor after samples of student work for external moderation
have been removed.
11

Staff Absences
Unexpected absences
- Contact KAJ (relief SMT person) the night before or by 6.00am on
021906458 (texting is fine, but remember to identify yourself)
- Also cc GLY (0277417610)
- You are required to set the stand alone work for your relief lessons, please
email lesson plan / details to SMT relief person and GLY. Contact GLY if any
textbooks and/or worksheets are needed.
Expected absences
If you know you are going to be away prior to the event - complete the
lesson outline on the Kamar planning sheet Teachers/planner and events/
select the right day/ select lesson/ fill in form/ Print lesson attach any
resources to it and hand to Jo before 4.00pm the day before.
-If you require class sets etc to be available for your class, book these in
advance on the Science booking sheet
Note: for both unexpected or expected absences it is preferable that you do
not set video based lessons as this would require a science dept member to
help set up which is difficult to manage around their own lessons. However, if
you wish to do so you may organise this with a willing member of the Science
department. If you are setting relief that requires department textbooks,
laptops or netbooks please make a note to the reliever to count these back in.

Recording of marks
We must keep accurate records of all relevant assessments. For all
NCEA assessments please keep a record of results in the following way,
either as a google file or in your physical markbook.

You will also need to enter all common assessment activity marks into the
appropriate files in KAMAR. This needs to be done immediately after the
assessment so that the files are up to date for processing and reporting and
submission purposes for NZQA. It is up to you to get this done as soon as
possible after going through the assessment for verification of grades or
marks with your class. TiCs will enter the second green tick for each
14

assessment; this will publish the grade on parent portal. TiCs will be
highly appreciative if they did not need to chase up grades or marks for
the appropriate processing purposes. In the comments column please
enter a breakdown of the student results, ie N3, A4, M2, E1. And if a student
has not sat an assessment for any reason, please note this in the comments
column too, eg absent due to illness / at hospital school / family
bereavement / opted not to sit.
Before any marks are submitted to NZQA please make sure any students
involved have signed off their grades.
Encourage students to keep their own log / record of assessment results.
Remember parents can see what is written in the comments column even if it
only has one green tick. TiCs will double green tick all common assessments.

Trips + Extension Opportunities

If you wish to take a class out of the school for a trip you must follow the
regulations in the Staff Manual as google docs trip form 2016
Overnight trip planning 16.
Taking your class somewhere else for the period
If you are NOT going to be in your timetabled room, please remember leave a
note pinned to the corkboard on your door and let the Main Office know of
your whereabouts and what class you have with you e.g. P3 Monday 11SC
BNS Library.
Junior science Nobel prize programme
This is an opportunity to extend our junior students. The programme will
require students to complete a series of extension projects that run alongside
the year 9 and 10 syllabus. Students may gain a bronze, silver or gold award
at the end of the year. See BNS for details.
NIWA Science Fair
In 2016 the Science fair will be part of the junior science extension Nobel
prize programme. BNS and HAC will oversee this.
JYPT and NZYPT
NZYPT is an extension opportunity for senior physics students. JYPT will be
part of the junior science extension Nobel prize programme. See CAM for
details.
ICAS Australian Science Quiz
This is on Tuesday 31st May, 2.45 - 3.45pm (permission letters will be given
to you for distribution to your classes) but entries must be in by Thursday 28 th
April at the very latest. Please encourage any students (Y9-13) to rise to the
challenge. Cost $8.50.
15

This is a skills based test with very good analysis of results provided which
we can use to identify able students so we can extend them. See GDM for
more details.
Thinking With Evidence
All year 9 and 10 classes will sit this assessment online during their science
class in the first two weeks of term 1. You will be provided with instructions
and logins for your students. You do not have to mark this, marking is done
for you. The data gathered from these assessments will be used as baseline
data for science and in tailoring the junior syllabus as necessary. It is also
extremely useful information to use in class when deciding groupings or
scaffolding lessons. It is important that all staff analyse their class
assessment results and discuss possibilities of using these with the TiCs of
Year 9 and 10. The test will be sat again in Term 4 to compare students
progress during the year.
Science Associates
Any students interested in giving up a lunchtime once per week to help out in
science department. Jobs may include soldering, labelling, dismantling,
bottling ginger beer, preparing or making resources and anything that Leanne
may need an extra pair of hands for. GLY and DXA will call a meeting in Term
1.

Lab Rules and Homework

Lab Rules
Make sure these are the first things written in all Year 9 and 10 exercise
books. Go over them with Year 11 and if they have forgotten them get them
to write them out also.
The Lab rules are:
1. Line up and wait quietly outside the lab until a teacher tells you to go in.
2. Bags must be left in a safe place where the teacher tells you to put them.
3. NO eating or drinking in the lab.
4. Safety glasses must be worn when heating anything, including water, and
when using corrosive chemicals.
5. Accidents and breakages must be reported to the teacher immediately.
6. Treat equipment carefully and use it only when you are told to.
7. Clean up and put away equipment after use. Wipe up any spills
immediately.
8. Work and move quietly in the lab.
Homework
The most important aspects of homework are that it is set where necessary
and is varied. It should be easy to mark. The department has no set rule as
16

to how much homework each year level should be doing, but bear in mind
that many of our students have high levels of extracurricular commitments so
homework should only be set when it is important to learning rather than as a
routine. Homework should be related to the lesson it follows, or to work about
to be undertaken. For students sitting NCEA, we have a school-wide policy to
minimise homework where possible.
Homework could be in the form of:
* writing up a practical
* collecting data
* making observations
* learning or memorising
* revision
* long term projects or research
* answering questions
* exercises or problems
* puzzles or games
* plotting graphs and interpreting them
* experimental work relating topics to the home

Work Standards, Discipline and Safety

Work Standards
All students are expected to participate in group and practical work. Work
records are to be maintained and guidelines as to their appropriateness kept
at Years 9 and 10. Please make a point of discussing with your students
things that you consider to be important when they keep a work record and
how you will inform them of their progress.
Discipline
Teachers should make sure that all students are aware of the classroom rules
of WGC. These should be on the wall of all rooms. In addition all science
teachers are aware that the school laboratory holds the potential for
injury to students. The highest standards of behaviour are therefore
required from every class. The hazards in the laboratory and the standards
of behaviour required will be explained to each Year 9 class during their first
few science lessons. Each class at Years 9 and 10 will have the schools lab
rules as the first item entered in their science exercise book. From time to
time all classes from Years 9 11 may need to be reminded of these rules.
Teachers must not hesitate to use the schools discipline procedures. Do not
let things get to a position that is hard to deal with before you act.
Janet McCAllister (MCJ) is the Specialist Classroom Teacher at WGC and is
available to help and advise you.
Safety
Leanne has a copy of the CoP (code of practice) for schools exempt
laboratories, if you have not seen this document please ask to have a look at
it.
Curriculum document if you require one of these please ask.
17

Appraisals, RTCs, Goals & PD

Appraisal PRTs and new to WGC will have a full period observation by
GLY. As part of new RTC process all staff will have two observations (can be
walk-throughs) during the year.
Registered Teacher Criteria and personal goals for 2016 Staff will be
advised at the beginning of 2016 at whole staff meeting of school-wide
approach.
Department goals 2016 we will be co-constructing these during our
