Evaluation 2- How Effective is the Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary

Texts?
For a bands branding to be recognisable it is important that there is a strong link
between the music video and ancillary products. I desired to create a strong
bond between the two so that a sense of branding and distinct style could be
achieved. The main image used on my album cover and magazine advertisement
is a snapshot from our music video. This enables a direct link between the main
product and ancillary texts. The underwater bath scene is one of the most
emotional throughout our video; therefore, I chose to use a snapshot from this
location as it mediates the power of emotion. This would allow Lilys feelings to
be continued through to the ancillary texts. The styling of our band member is
the same on my digipak, advert and throughout the video, mediating a strong
bond between the three. The minimal makeup and styling used enables a sense
of verisimilitude, allowing a realistic look to be produced.
The overall style of my ancillary texts is very simplistic, similar to the style of our
music video. All the locations used are very minimal and plain. The bed scenes,
for instance, allows full attention to be on Lily, due to the plain white bed sheets
and wooden bed being the only other things in the shot. Similarly, the image
used on my album cover enables full attention to be on the band member as the
rest of the shot is simplistic and mono-tonal. The framing of shots throughout our
video are all very precise and well thought through. This is similar to the image
used on my magazine advert and digipak. Lily has been centrally framed on the
image on my cover and advert, which is also seen during our video. We carefully
considered the framing of our shots so that our final video had a professionally
looking finish and conveyed generic conventions shown in an actual music
video.
Throughout our video a mixture of eye contact and non-eye contact scenes are
used. The aspects where Lily makes eye contact with the camera are very
engaging and mediates a sense of emotion and inclusion with the audience.
Lily makes eye-contact with the camera on the main image used on my cover
and advert. This conveys a feeling of verisimilitude as the audience will feel
engaged with the Lily. As well as eye contact, Lilys facial expressions stay the
same throughout the photography used and during the video. The vacant
expressions convey sadness and a visual representation of Lilys emotions.
Despite Psychedelic being a duo, Lily is the member who represents the both of
them. The bands record label (Notion Productions) would demand to have one
lead that would create a sense of branding for the band. Due to this, Lily is the
only member on my digipak, advert and within our music video. Instead of being
in the public eye, Marina would be part of the production side to the band- this
allowing her to still play an active role within the band. We were inspired by
Dyers theory of having a star image is shown in our video and my ancillary
products. Lily was constructed into a star image who would be relatable to the
audience, due to her emotion shown throughout. This star persona has been
shown during our music video and on my digipak and magazine advert,
generating a strong bond between all three products.
Our record label logo features on my ancillary products as this is a generic
convention of digipaks and magazine adverts. Despite the logo not featuring in

the video, the video as a whole represents the label due to Lily featuring in it.
The use of the record labels logo, on my ancillary texts, would bring the
products together as a brand which Psychedelics target audience could
relate to.
