LTC 4240: Art for Children

Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Stories

Lesson Overview/Summary*: (This is like an abstract of the structure and procedures section)
- Students will be given a science lesson about the lung inside the human body. They will then
take the organ and create a story using image of the organ. They will have to color an image of
that organ to go along with that story.
Key Concepts for each area (1-2 each): What you want the
students to know.*
1. Visual Art: Elaborate on an imaginative idea, create personal
satisfactory art work
2. Literacy: conduct short research projects that builds
knowledge about a topic, demonstrate command of the
conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation,
and spelling when writing
3. Science: Science relates to the human body

Grade Level*: 3rd

Class Periods Required:
(please circle)
1

Essential Questions (1-2)*:

1. How does your story relate to the organ of the lung?
2. What are the functions of the lung and how do they
relate to story telling?

Lesson Objectives/Goals: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): What

you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to . . .
Design the organ based on their story
Be able to explain detail and how to create it
2. Literacy: The students will be able to . . .
Create a story based on a specific organ they chose
Create s story using proper punctuation, grammar, and use transition words correctly
3. Science:
Discuss the functions of the lung
Have an understanding of how the lung affects the human body
Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)

(3-4)

1. Visual Art (May use NAEA National standards):

Anchor standard #1- Generate and conceptualize

Instructional Strategies (Teachers approach to helping students

achieve learning)
Teacher will need to do research on the lung and
create a lesson that it is able to understand for third

2.

3.

artistic ideas and work

Anchor standard #3- refine and complete artistic work
Literacy:
Writing 1a. Introduce new topic and write and opinion
Speaking and Listening 4. Report on a topic, tell a story
Science
Big Idea 1 DOK Level 1, Identify issues that affect
personal safety
Big Idea 3 DOK Level 1, Identify different life changed
and events

Content Areas Integrated*:

1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artisit: Nick Cave)
Different media used for students to see visuals on how
different lungs work
2. Literacy
Having students be able to tell stories about anything.
Realizing they are authors and anything can be made to
be a story
3. Science
Taking a look at the human organ of the lung and
explaining the functions

graders. Make the content able to be understood by

younger students. Use hands on activities for students
to get a hands on experience.

Lesson Structure & Procedure(s) Sequence of events of the lesson

elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion ,please be
very specific, walk me through step by step of the What of what is
happening with a rationale as to WHY you are doing this):

Day 1
1. Students will come in to an image of a lung on the board
2. Students will be asked to identify the image and when able
to identify they will brainstorm with their table about what
functions they know about the lung
3. A lesson will be given about some of the functions of the
lung at a level that students can understand, they will also
learn of some heath problems that can come from lung
issues.
Day 2
4. Students will have a review secession of how to write a
story
5. Students will review punctuation, and transition words
6. Students will then create their own story based on the
image of the lung
Day 3
7. Students will have a peer look over their story and make
corrections
8. Students will have teacher look of their peer edited paper

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template

Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or demonstrate)*:
I will show an image of an actual lung and see if the
students can identify what organ it is

Formative Assessment strategy: (how will you assess while the

learning is happening?)

Formative assessment will take place during the lesson

while walking around and looking at the image students
are creating, also when I am going over their peer
edited rough draft

and sign off if they are ready for their final draft
Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set, how will student share what they
learned):

Students will close with their colored image of their

lung and have their final story wrote attached to their
image

Summative Assessment strategy*:

Summative assessment will be a rubric given to
student and teacher explaining what is expected from
students final story.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)

Students will need to have prior knowledge of how to write sentences, how to use correct punctuation, and transition words

Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning
Students will use to smartboard to view and image of the lung
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
I think this will encourage the students to see things in different ways. Seeing the shape of a lung and realizing that it
could be created into two planets, or two towns. Realizing that you can not just look on the surface but look at what it
can become.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
Students will know they have learned something by reflecting on their story. They will be given the story back to them
and will see that they remember the functions of the lung because they used story to remember.
Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.

Everyone will be able to complete the assignment as assigned because the students are creating their own story and
not having to write one based on what I want them to write about.
