Grace Lutheran Church
1 W. Montgomery Street ~ Johnstown, NY 12093-2409
‘The Rev. David Almleaf , Pastor ~ December 2016
Dear Members and Friends,
Advent has begun and it won't be long before the season of Christmas is in full swing. Advent helps
the church remember that Jesus will return someday. Advent also helps us to prepare our hearts for Christ to
be born anew within cach one of us as we prepare to celebrate Jesu } and the light of the world coming
into the dark comers of our lives.
On Sunday December 4" the Dream Catchers will hold a Christmas concert for us in the Sanctuary at
3 Pam. Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall following the concert.
‘We will be meeting at the church at 5:45 p.m. on Friday December 9" to travel to Pine View
Commons for caroling afier which we will return (o the church for pizza and to help decorate our Christmas
tee (“hanging of the greens”)
Our Sunday School children will be presenting their Christmas pageant on Sunday December 18" at
the worship service. There will be a reception following worship in the fellowship hall.
‘aturday this year with three services of Caroling, Candlelight and Communion at
‘30 p.m., and 10 p.m. Hopefully one of these will be convenient
Christmas day is on a Sunday this year. Because many of our people work very hard to make
Christmas Eve special, we are giving our choir and choir director a break by having a quict spoken service on
Christmas day. ‘The quiet reflective nature of the service should actually make the day of Jesus’ birth very
special
Nancy and I want to wish everyone a blessed and Merry Christmas.
By Grace through faith,

Pastor David AlmlealThe Evangelical Lutheran Hymnal
For those of you who could not attend the congregational meeting in October, we
thought it should be reviewed as to how we came to discussing updating our
hymnals to the new (which is now 10 years old) red hymnal
1, The subject was originally discussed by each church over 5 years ago at
the time of our merging. It was decided not to pursue the matter at that time due to
having enough on our plates already,
2. May 2016 - The issue of the red hhymnals was brought up again. The
hymnal is now 10 years old!
3. After a discussion with Pastor, he and I agreed it was a good time to talk
about the hymnals instead of passing the issue onto a new minister when pastor
retires in 2019.
A. Pastors coming out of seminary would have used this book.
B. Many other Lutheran churches are already using it
C, Many of our green hymnals are falling apart. Right now we can
purchase more but eventually they will stop printing them.
4. We asked member of the Worship and Music Committee to take time to
look at the new red hymnals we already own,
5. September - At the Worship and Music Committee Darlene Pollak and
Pastor discussed the similarities and differences in hymnals. The committee
recommended the issue be brought to council.
6. Deacon Meeting - Pastor and our deacons studied the red hymnal
checking out the similarities and differences.
7. October - The council reviewed and discussed the time line and finances
which would be presented to the congregation at the October Congregational
Meeting
A. Before the meeting was called to order, Pastor and Darlene gave a
presentation of the new hymnal.
B. Questions were asked at the meeting. Any other questions between
now and the January Congregational meeting can be addressed by
Pastor, Darlene, members of the council and Worship & Music
committee,
C. There are a few hymnals in the church office, if you wish to look at
one, please see the secretary to sign it out.
D. There will be further discussion and a vote at the January meeting.
8. We would need to order 189 hymnals at $22.50 each for a total of
$4,252.50. The worship leader edition cost would have cost us $140.00
but will be discounted 100%. Shipping is around $212.00.
As in the past, we will be asking for donations. You would be able to purchase a
hymnal(s) in memory or in honor of someone or just because we will need them, A
memorial/honor recognition would be put in the front of the hymnal. Any balance
owed would most likely come from our memorial fund. It would take 6-10 weeks to
receive them. They would be introduced after Easter. We already have members who would like to donate hymnals,(no money at this
time). If you are interested, there will be a sign up sheet in the church office so we
can present how much has been pledged at the January meeting
As you can tell, there has been a lot of time and work gone into thinking about the
new (10 years old) red hymnal. Please consider and ask any questions you may
have and try to attend the January Congregational meeting as we will vote on
whether to purchase this hymnal.

As this series of articles on the Seasons of the church year continues we come
to the Season of Advent. Advent is actually the beginning of the church year. As noted
Jast month, the color is blue, the color of hope.

a Prepare Advent looks forward to Bethlehem and Jesus’ final
the Way retum as well. The first two ‘Sundays focus on Jesus’ return and
the last few, on His birth, We defer our Christmas carols tll the
day of the Christmas pageant to let the unique character of
Advent prevail.
On Christmas Eve, we celebrate the birth of Christ with white paraments.
People know the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” but aren't always aware of what
they are. Christmas day is day one and January 5" is day 12. Epiphany on January 6"
caps off the season.
‘The name of Jesus is observed on New Years Day which is a white day and it
celebrates the circumcision and naming of Jesus in the temple on the eighth day which
was the custom at the time of His birth.Edna O, Miller entered into her
