What is house keeping?

General care, cleanliness, orderliness, and maintenance of
business or property.

Good housekeeping practices are often simple common sense that

focuses more on the human side of business operations.
Good housekeeping means cleanliness, tidiness and place for every
thing & every thing in its place.

House Keeping is the benchmark for Safety:
Poor Housekeeping = Poor Safety.
Moderate Housekeeping = Moderate Safety
Good Housekeeping = Good Safety

The 5S concept was introduced to Sri Lanka around 1994 by Dr. Taiki
Akimoto who was brought to Sri Lanka for a private company
assignment at the Midaya Ceramics factory, Meepe.

Sort out the items and discard the unwanted
Make a list of all the items
Decide which items can be disposed off and which items need to be
kept
Items marked for disposal should be disposed in a safely.

Organise layout of tools and equipment by giving a place for every
thing
- Designated locations
- Use tapes and labels
- Ensure everything is available as it is needed and at the point of
use (ease of access)
- Eliminate searches

3 Seiso - Cleaning
Clean the place thoroughly and keep every thing in its place.
- insist on regular cleaning at the end of the work
- sweep, dust, polish and paint

4 Seiketsu - Standardization
Maintain high standards of housekeeping at workplace at all times.
Ensure that people keep the items at designated place after its use.
Design the system such that if some thing is missing from the place, it is
easily highlighted
