Overlapping agitator action is generally used on materials

Tangential agitator action is generally used for materials of
heavier viscosities such as adhesives, polyester pre-mixes,
flush colors and brake lining compounds.

IfillEac=angna] Day agitators

Day offers many different styles of agitators, and only Day
offers complete lines of double arm mixers with either over-

type to suit your mix. Day agitators are usually made of cast
steel, but can be provided in stainless steel, bronze, Monel and

lapping or tangential operation. From these many choices,

other rust, acid or abrasion resistant alloys. Cored agitators

Day engineers can provide the right agitator action and blade

can be provided where additional cooling or heating is required.

sigma type agitator blade is best for all around use. It may
be used with either tangential or overlapping action. Both
actions provide excellent mixing characteristics.

135 spiral

agitator blades provide the same smooth blending and folding action as the 180 spiral but have been designed for the larger overlapping type mixers.

180 spiral agitator blades provide excellent mixing for

fiber reinforced products. They do not have the same heavy
shearing action of other types, and therefore produce a smooth
homogenous mix with no fiber breakdown.

double nobben agitator blades produce the extra shearing

action required on certain materials. This agitator resists blade
distortion from stresses in the mixing load. It is available in
both overlapping and tangential action mixers.

serrated agitator blades are used where it is necessary for

the blade to either get a "grip" on the mix, or where materials
in the mix are so heavy and dense that a tearing action is
required. For highly abrasive materials, replaceable serrated
shoes can be provided.

From the beginning Day has pioneered in the "single end"

drive principle delivering total power to the agitators from

dependable, efficient, proven drive units.
The greatest advantage of single end drives is that total
power is always delivered to the agitators throughout the
life of the mixer. In double end drives this is not always so.

direct drives power the mixer from the drive motor

through a torque coupling, a speed reducer and flexible
coupling to the front agitator shaft. The torque coupling in
this type of drive acts as an overload protective device.

right angle direct drives provide savings in floor space

while maintaining a direct drive to the agitator shaft. The
reducer in this arrangement, instead of a straight through
parallel shaft unit, is mounted at a right angle to the drive
motor, permits mounting the entire drive train in a more
compact area.

chain drives, utilizing chain and sprockets, provides power

from the motor through the chain to precision cut gearing.
All gearing runs in oil for smooth trouble-free performance.
Where this type of drive is employed on heavy duty mixers,
a shear pin safety device can be provided.

As gears wear they tend to get out of phase with the result
that one end of the drive assumes a greater portion of the load
resulting in shorter drive train life. Since "single end" drives
are less complicated, maintenance is greatly reduced.
Day offers three basic drive arrangements, "Mix-Matched"
to suit your product and floor space requirements.

ulta=1-ETMIlocA stuffing boxes

air seal type stuffing boxes employ pneumatic pressure at 4 to 10 lbs. to prevent the
product being mixed from entering the stuffing
box. The air is introduced into the lantern ring
and forms a positive seal at the tank head. By
pulling a vacuum through the lantern ring, air
seal stuffing boxes may be adapted to vacuum
operation.

split type air seal stuffing boxes are available on larger, heavy duty mixers. By removing
the cap screws and sliding the gland housing
and follower rack, ready access to the lantern
ring and packing is achieved. After serviceing
the entire unit may be quckly re-assembled.

divided type stuffing boxes are designed for

vacuum applications and consist of two separate stuffing boxes separated by a vacuum
chamber which prevents lubricants from working into the mix. This design provides ample
space for ease of maintenance.

i
mechanical seals are employed on pressure and vacuum applications where leakage
through the stuffing box cannot be tolerated.
Precision lapped sealing faces provide a positive seal and eliminate the need for packing.
A wide variety of mechanical seal types are
available for all applications.

sanitary type stuffing boxes are recommended for food or pharmaceutical applications where completeness and ease of cleaning
are a must. Entire unit can be disassembled
in a matter of minutes without the use of tools.
For vacuum or pressure applications the sanitary seal is incorporated in the divided type
stuffing box.

extended hub type stuffing boxes can be

designed for critical applications where product build-up between the agitator hub and tank
head cannot be tolerated. This design eliminates the step between the agitator hub and
shaft in the product zone.

Arm Mixers to conform with F.D.A. and other regulatory agencies.

The seal and stuffing box area, where the agitator shaft passes
through the head of the tank into the bearings and drive, has always
been the most critical point as far as contamination is concerned. The
Day Sanitary Double Arm Mixer has a stuffing box that can be completely disassembled and cleaned without removing bearings or disturbing the drive mechanism. Moreover, this can be accomplished
without the use of tools. All components are secured by hand knobs

for easy removal.

with the MIXTRUDER. They can be dismantled in
minutes without tools.
C'. MIXTRUDER during extruding operation.

mixtruder
Here's how the MIXTRUDER works
The Mixtruder is designed for mixing and extruding almost
every type of material that could be encountered in the plastics,
rubber, food, drug, and chemical industries.
This machine is a versatile and efficient double arm mixer
with a screw in the bottom for unloading or extruding the mixed
material. The extrusion screw runs in a cylindrical trough
tangential to, and below the mixer blades.
The diameter of the extruder barrel increases with the capacity of the machine itself. The inside diameter of the barrel
is precision-machined and the outside diameter of the screw
is held to a close tolerance for uniform clearance. The extruder
is a "continuous" flight screw with a 1:1 ratio of pitch to
diameter. Day engineers designed a special optional extruder
with cut-out sections that act like teeth to provide "chopping"
action on bulky material. The extrusion rate and pressure vary
depending on the material being processed, size of the extrusion die, and on the size of the screw itself.
During the mixing process, the extrusion screw is driven in
a reverse motion by a separate motor. This action of the screw
pushes the material into the mixing trough and within reach
of the blades, thus assuring a thorough blending of all the
ingredients, and, at the same time, reducing the mixing time
as compared with an ordinary mixer.
For discharging the material, the direction of the screw's
rotation is reversed and the mixed material is then unloaded
through the extrusion barrel.
The agitators rotate in the trough of the tank, meeting
tangentially. The front agitator rotates faster than the rear,
usually in the ratio of 3 to 2. The large nip between the agitators and the difference in speed pulls the material into the
agitators for certain and effective dispersion.
Extremely tough materials such as filled thermosetting resins
and bulk moulding compounds, which are very heavy and
viscous, are handled easily with the MIXTRUDER, along with
scores of other materials with viscosities up to and even beyond
10,000,000 centipoise.

Designed for flexibility, the MIXTRUDER

The extruder screw has its own gearmotor so that agitators
and screw operate independently. This separate power source
for the screw allows the MIXTRUDER to be supplied with either
the standard non-tilt tank, or a special tilt-type tank. When
optional tilt model is furnished, a hydraulic motor drive is provided for tilting.
While single speed agitators and screws are standard, the
MIXTRUDER can be provided with variable speed agitator and/
or screw drives, or two-speed drives, for precise speed control.
Any of the Day Mix-Matched stuffing boxes can be selected
for the MIXTRUDER. These include standard Air-Seal type
divided type, a wide choice of mechanicals, extended hub typ
or the patented Day Sanitary Stuffing Box.
The MIXTRUDER can be equipped with tank and extruder

show main drive end, and discharge nozzle.

How MIXTRUDER cuts costs

Undoubtedly, the most significant saving to
be gained with the MIXTRUDER is when it is
integrated into existing or planned automated
production lines. For instance, where the extruded material cannot be readily pelletized as
it comes from the extruder, the MIXTRUDER
can be used in conjunction with a cooling conveyor and separate pelletizer to accomplish
the job.

is available with varied options

jackets, for steam pressures to 125 psi, or baffled for hot or
cold water or hot oil. The two mixing arms and screw
can be cored for temperature control of the product through
thermocouples.
Other special options include: vacuum covers for mixing
under vacuum; pressure covers for using internal pressure to
help unload material; hydraulic ram covers which force intractable material into the blades, or any special covers required. Special inlets, viewing ports, dust removal connections,
and other custom features are available.
in The MIXTRUDER is constructed of steel or various alloys
in sizes from one to 1000 gallons. Motor and gear box size
are engineered to meet customer specifications.

The discharge nozzle is illustrated here.

A wide variety of customer supplied dies can
be fitted to the MIXTRUDER to discharge the
product in the desired shape.
The versatility of the unit provides another cost
cutting factor in mixing and extruding operations. With the installation of the screw, the mixing productivity of the already efficient double
arm mixer is stepped up, and consequently the
mixing time for high viscosity materials is
considerably reduced. The (continuous-flight)
screw greatly facilitates unloading the mixer;
by merely pressing a button, the mixer material
is expelled from the discharge end of the
machine
