sigma type agitator blade is best for all around use. It may
be used with either tangential or overlapping action. Both
actions provide excellent mixing characteristics.
135 spiral
agitator blades provide the same smooth blending and folding action as the 180 spiral but have been designed for the larger overlapping type mixers.

As gears wear they tend to get out of phase with the result
that one end of the drive assumes a greater portion of the load
resulting in shorter drive train life. Since "single end" drives
are less complicated, maintenance is greatly reduced.
Day offers three basic drive arrangements, "Mix-Matched"
to suit your product and floor space requirements.

air seal type stuffing boxes employ pneumatic pressure at 4 to 10 lbs. to prevent the
product being mixed from entering the stuffing
box. The air is introduced into the lantern ring
and forms a positive seal at the tank head. By
pulling a vacuum through the lantern ring, air
seal stuffing boxes may be adapted to vacuum
operation.
split type air seal stuffing boxes are available on larger, heavy duty mixers. By removing
the cap screws and sliding the gland housing
and follower rack, ready access to the lantern
ring and packing is achieved. After serviceing
the entire unit may be quckly re-assembled.
i
mechanical seals are employed on pressure and vacuum applications where leakage
through the stuffing box cannot be tolerated.
Precision lapped sealing faces provide a positive seal and eliminate the need for packing.
A wide variety of mechanical seal types are
available for all applications.
sanitary type stuffing boxes are recommended for food or pharmaceutical applications where completeness and ease of cleaning
are a must. Entire unit can be disassembled
in a matter of minutes without the use of tools.
For vacuum or pressure applications the sanitary seal is incorporated in the divided type
stuffing box.

All inside surfaces of the sanitary split seal are of stainless steel
construction with the outside housing made of aluminum. The packing
is crane type, molded teflon CVU sets, consisting of one male adaptor,
three pressure rings, and one female adaptor.
The bowl is constructed of 304 solid stainless steel with 304 solid
stainless steel tank heads. The bowl heads are bolted to the tank with
inside fillet welds ground to a radius, free of cracks and crevices. The
bowl head outer surfaces have a smooth profile with no ribbing on the
bowl heads to facilitate cleaning. The inside and outside tank surfaces
are brought to a #4 polish.

mixtruder
Here's how the MIXTRUDER works
The Mixtruder is designed for mixing and extruding almost
every type of material that could be encountered in the plastics,
rubber, food, drug, and chemical industries.
This machine is a versatile and efficient double arm mixer
with a screw in the bottom for unloading or extruding the mixed
material. The extrusion screw runs in a cylindrical trough
tangential to, and below the mixer blades.
The diameter of the extruder barrel increases with the capacity of the machine itself. The inside diameter of the barrel
is precision-machined and the outside diameter of the screw
is held to a close tolerance for uniform clearance. The extruder
is a "continuous" flight screw with a 1:1 ratio of pitch to
diameter. Day engineers designed a special optional extruder
with cut-out sections that act like teeth to provide "chopping"
action on bulky material. The extrusion rate and pressure vary
depending on the material being processed, size of the extrusion die, and on the size of the screw itself.
During the mixing process, the extrusion screw is driven in
a reverse motion by a separate motor. This action of the screw
pushes the material into the mixing trough and within reach
of the blades, thus assuring a thorough blending of all the
ingredients, and, at the same time, reducing the mixing time
as compared with an ordinary mixer.
For discharging the material, the direction of the screw's
rotation is reversed and the mixed material is then unloaded
through the extrusion barrel.
The agitators rotate in the trough of the tank, meeting
tangentially. The front agitator rotates faster than the rear,
usually in the ratio of 3 to 2. The large nip between the agitators and the difference in speed pulls the material into the
agitators for certain and effective dispersion.
Extremely tough materials such as filled thermosetting resins
and bulk moulding compounds, which are very heavy and
viscous, are handled easily with the MIXTRUDER, along with
scores of other materials with viscosities up to and even beyond
10,000,000 centipoise.

the proving ground fo
more efficient mixing
You are invited to visit our laboratory and to run tests of your
products on our complete line of Double Arm Mixers. In this
well-equipped laboratory more than a quarter million dollars
worth of equipment is available, along with a staff of qualified
technicians. Their purpose: to help solve your mixing problems,
and to show you how the various types of mixers and agitators
will process test batches of your product. You can arranae for
your visit and the tests through your Day representative, or by
calling or writing direct. The tests will include a report to you
suggesting suitable equipment for full production.
