your ability. You will NOT receive full marks if your explanation and
analysis is too vague or too general and lacks proper examples. I
WANT A SOPHISTICATED, THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND CRITICAL
EXPLANATION.
1. How does the title of the book (The Catcher in the Rye) reflect on one or more themes
in the novel? Make sure you clearly identify the theme you have chosen to discuss as part
of your answer. Provide examples from the novel and explain how they relate to the
chosen theme.
2. At the end of the novel, Holden watches Phoebe ride the carousel over and over again
and eventually she reaches out for the gold ring.What does the carousel represent? How
has Holdens character developed by the end of the story?
3. What is the significance of the Natural History Museum? What does the Museum tell
you about Holdens character?
4. Throughout the book, Holden asks several times where the ducks go in the wintertime
when the water freezes. Explain how Salinger develops this object as a symbol
throughout the story and provide examples from the novel, which support your answer.
5. Holdens last line of the play holds a strong meaning. Explain the significance of his
last words: Dont ever tell anybody anything. If you do you start missing everybody.
