The Problem of Evil

The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. Psalm 103:6
If God is omnibenevolent (all good/loving) and omnipotent (all powerful)
then how can there be evil and suffering in the world?
Two types of evil
Natural evil

Moral evil

Suffering caused by nature,

beyond human control
e.g. earthquakes, disease,
famine, volcanoes

Suffering caused by human

actions
e.g. murder, rape, theft, war

The Problem:
1. If God is omnibenevolent then he wouldnt want there to be evil
and suffering.
2. If God is omnipotent then he would be able to stop evil and
suffering from happening.
3. Evil and suffering exist.
4. Therefore either God isnt omnibenevolent, OR he isnt
omnipotent, OR he doesnt exist.

If God isnt allpowerful or allloving is that a

God I want to
believe in?

If God isnt allpowerful and allloving, how can

I worship him?

Questions this
raises for Christian
faith.

If God is allpowerful and

all-loving,
how could
he allow
suffering?
