2. CORE: CAM, TCAM and SDM Templates

CAM

Content-Addressable memory ( CAM ) Stores [ Learner MAC address information]

MAC Addresses learned are Times Stamped; Renewed each Frame
MAC Addresses Moving Ports Latest Time Stamp wins
Idle Cam Entries Are Kept for 300 seconds ( Default)
Key Commands:
- Show mad address-table ( or the older show mac-addresses-table;)
- Mac address-table static
- Mac address-table aging

TCAM
Ternary CAM 0 TCAM) is a Layer 3 Version of the CAM Table
Uses ASICS Combined with CAM memory to Accomplish Routing, ACLS and QOS via
HARDWARE
Verify the TCAM Utilization with this command:
- Show Platform tcam utilisation

SDM Templates

Stakable Switched have Limited Resources That are Shared by CAM, TCAM, etc
Verify your usage by using the show platform tcam utilization
Use show sdm prefer to find out the usage template assigned
Use show sdm prefer ? to determine which template you should use

5. CORE: Handling Err-Disabled Ports

CAUTION: Err-Disabled ports are usually Disabled for Good Reason

Manual process: Shutdown/ no Shutdown
Automatic Process: Errdisable recovery cause / Errdisable Recovery Interval
Verification: Show Errdiasable Recovery
SHOW INT STATUS ERR-DISABLED

6. CORE: Managing Power over Ethernet

Power Over Ethernet: Standards and UN-Standards
- Cisco Inline power ( 7W )
- 802.3AF (15.4W)
- 802.3AT ( 30W)
- Cisco Universal POE ( 60 W)

9. VLAN: All Things VTP

Page 6

KEY CONCEPTS:

VTP Domain Name / Password

Null Domain
VTP Pruning
ISL VLAN Limitation

VTP VERSION 1
- The Classic !
VTP VERSION 2
- Now With Token Ring Support
VTP VERSION 3
- Complete rewrite
- No auto ( NULL )
- All VLAN Numbers Supported
- VTP Password Secured
- Primary Server concept Safety
- Private VLAN Support

10.

VLAN: Trunking in Depth

Trunking ( AKA TAGGGING ) Passes Multi-VLAn Information Between Switches

Places VLAN information into each Frame
Layer 2 Feature, can be negotiated ( not Recommended )
