Comments:
Dear Han Zheng,
You started with an ambitious thesis that included motivation, a safe learning environment, and communicative competence. In academic writing be cautious about
mentioning a concept like communicative competence (in your thesis) and not defining and offering a citation.
You did a good job at defining and explaining motivation including intrinsic and extrinsic- which was a dominant part of your statement. This was effective, and you
do a good job at integrating in sources- including definitions. You provide some good examples of what can be done to motivate students in the classroom setting.
At the end of the section on motivation you mention providing a safe environment and students not being embarrassed by their mistakes, but are lacking
explanation to support the idea. Certainly these ideas are related to motivation, but more explanation is needed. In addition, more explanation was needed of the five
features of CLT (Nunan, 1991). These principles could have been elaborated within parts of your statement as reinforcement of the concepts and to improve cohesion.
Academic voice present: minor issues with APA formatting, grammar, word choice and punctuation. Pay attention to guidelines for writing given in class and
references online.
Overall good. This statement, with editing, will be a good sample for job and future academic endeavors.
