Unit Plan Overview

Teacher Name: Barbara Chang (TA-ing for Ms. Anji Straayer)

Subject: 9th grade English/Language Arts
Topic of Unit: Grammar - Punctuation

How does the unit connect to the lives of the students:

How I hope it will connect with the lives of the students would be that it would give them
greater mastery over their writing to clearly articulate their thoughts unto paper, not
limited to speaking. I also hope through this unit to be able to show them the importance
of correct grammar in real life, how a well-written and correctly punctuated paper or
speech is much more impactful and effective to their audience.

Overall Goals:

Students should be able to articulate clearly their thoughts on paper using correct
grammar, as well as notice the differences between a properly punctuated piece or work
versus one with little or none correct punctuation.

Specific objectives: (some of those expected from Common Core English 9th-10th grades:
http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/L/9-10/ )

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.2
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization,

punctuation, and spelling when writing.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.1.B
Use various types of phrases (noun, verb, adjectival, adverbial, participial, prepositional,

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.9-10.6
Acquire and use accurately general academic and domain-specific words and phrases,
sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness
level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a
word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Evidence that students met the objectives:

Students will be able to do the exercises given to them to show understanding of the
lesson. The exercises contain, but are not limited to: exercises in their grammar textbook,

identifying correct grammar in given passages, and creating their own written piece.
Students will be able to write an article demonstrating their understanding of grammar

through a well-written, flowing piece of writing that is properly punctuated.

Students will be able to be involved and participate when the teacher decides to have a
formative quizzing activity to check their progress, such as answering questions in the
textbook aloud.
