1. We know the mean commute time for residents of Toronto to be 65.6 minutes. We are interested in
understanding if residents of The Junction, a neighbourhood in Toronto, have commute times that are
statistically significantly greater than the population of Toronto. Assume we eventually take a sample
of 36 residents of The Junction and find their mean commute to be 66.2 minutes, with a standard
deviation of 1.2 minutes. Use an alpha value of 0.01. (TOTAL: 20 points)
a. Set up the null and alternative hypotheses. (2 points)
b. State what the alpha value represents. (2 points)
c. What critical value of the test statistic will we use to determine if the commute time for The
Junction residents is statistically significantly more than residents of Toronto? (5 points)
d. Calculate the test statistic for the sample mean. Is the sample means test statistic value
beyond the critical test statistic value? (8 points)
e. Note if you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. (2 points)
f. What is the p-value of the sample mean? Write a sentence saying what it represents. (1 points)

2. Repeat question 1 a-f, but assume we have a sample of 16 residents, we are using an alpha value of
0.05, and we are curious if the commute times of residents in The Junction and Toronto are
statistically significantly different. Note: for f state whether the p-value would be less than or
greater than 0.05. (TOTAL: 20 points same distribution for a-f as question 1)

3. We want to know if The Junction and The Beaches neighbourhoods have significantly different
commute times. We take a sample of residents in each neighbourhood and find the sample mean for
The Junction is 61.2 minutes (std. deviation = 5 min, n = 25) and the sample mean for The Beaches is
59.2 minutes (std. deviation = 4 min, n = 16). Use an alpha = 0.10. (TOTAL: 20 points)
a. Set up the null and alternative hypotheses. (4 points)
b. What test statistic will you use and why? (4 points)
c. What is the value of the test statistic and what is the critical value of the test statistic? (8
points)
d. Do we reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? (4 points)

4. You have collected data on the amount of money families spend on groceries per shopping trip. You
took three samples, where each represents a different income level (low, middle, high). Conduct an
ANOVA test on the following data to determine if grocery expenditures vary by income or not. (40
