Structures and Systems
In this unit, my peers and I looked at the Big Idea of Systems and Structures and how
they relate to Standard- Based education in the classroom. This Bid Idea is interesting to me
because it seems like the article written by Elliot Eisner (2002), 10 Lessons the Arts Teach,
focuses more on what you can gain from the art than if you are meeting the standards within art.
According to Eisner, The arts teach children to make GOOD JUDGMENTS about qualitative
relationships. Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the
arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail. I think this is important to know about because
even though Eisner is speaking about the arts I think this can be applied to all curriculum in a
sense. It doesnt have to all be standards based because a lot of the time we end up leaving
children behind in education because they arent meeting the standard we think they should be
meeting when in actuality everything doesn't have to be measured according to standards. Even
though I think this can a good model to follow I also like the ideas that Walker (2001), talks
about in the article Teaching Meaning in Artmaking, because it talks more about how
including certain basics within art curriculum still enables the students to learn what they need to
learn. According to Walker, Implementation of comprehensive art education not only expands
the content of art instruction but also--according to Clark Day, and Greer-significantly alters the
notions of such factors as the learner, the teacher, creativity, and adult art within the context of
the classroom. This is interesting know about too because you can still expand and teach
student according to standards and they will still learn, comprehend and be able to relay and use

the information in the future. I think if I were to teach I would want to use the comprehensive art
education approach because it seems like I can add a lot of valuable information into the
curriculum that's will still be able to be used in the future by the students.
