Course: Design of Machine Elements II
Course code: 11ME5DCDM2

Duration: 3 hours
Max Marks: 100
01.02.2013

Instructions : Answer any five full questions choosing one from each unit.

UNIT 1
1.

a)

b)

Distinguish between straight beams & curved beams subjected to bending

moment.
A curved beam section of a punch press (with all dimensions in mm) is as shown
in fig. It is subjected to pure bending in its plane of symmetry. Find the proper
value of thickness 't' such that the bending stresses in inner & outer fibers are
numerically equal. Also determine the magnitude of a couple that produces a
fiber stress of 90 MPa in the section.

spring.

Design a spring for an elevator shaft at the bottom of which 8 identical springs
are set in parallel to absorb the shock of the elevator in case of failure. The
weight of elevator is 60 KN & the counter weight is 20 KN. The elevator has a 10
free fall of 1.5 m from rest. The spring is made of 25 mm diameter rod.
Determine the maximum stress in each spring, if the spring index is 6 & each
spring has 15 active turns. Take G=84 GPa ..

UNIT 2
3.

a)

A single plate friction clutch with both sides effective has 0.3 m outer diameter
and 0.16 m inside diameter. The coefficient of friction is 0.2 and it runs at 1000
8
rpm. Find the power transmitted assuming;
(i) Uniform wear condition
(ii) Uniform pressure condition
Take the allowable maximum pressure as 0.08 MPa.

b)

A differential band brake shown if fig operates on a drum of diameter 500 mm.
The drum rotates at 300 rpm counter clockwise and absorbs 36 KW. Jl=0.25.
Determine;
(i)
Force F required to operate the brake.
(ii)
Width of band if thickness is 5 mm and allowable tensile stress on the
band material is 72 MPa.
(iii)
The dimensions the brake lever of rectangular cross section with depth=
thrice its width using an allowable bending stress of 135 MPa.

4.

a)

What are the factors that contribute to dynamic loads m gears? Discuss 6
Buckingham's equation for dynamic load.

b)

Design a bronze spur gear (allowable static stress 81.4 MPa) and mild steel
pinion (allowable static stress 101 MPa) to transmit 5 KW at 1800 rpm. The
velocity ratio is 3.5. Pressure angle is 14 1h0 Assuming number of teeth on
pinion as 16, determine the module and face width. Also suggest suitable
hardness for the gear pair based on dynamic and wear load considerations.

Design a pair of bevel gears of 20 FDI tooth system to transmit 12 KW at 300

rpm of the gear & 14 70 rpm of the pinion. The angle between the shaft axes is 20
90. The pinion has 20 teeth and the material for both gears is cast steel
(act=183.33 N/mm 2 ), BHN 320. Take service factor as 1.25 and check the gears
for wear & dynamic load. Suggest suitable surface hardness for the gear pair.

b)

Derive Petroffs equation for the coefficient of friction in a lightly loaded

bearing.

A full journal bearing having diameter of 50 mm and I 00 mm long has a bearing

pressure of 1.2 N/mm 2 The speed of the journal is 1000 rpm. The bearing is IS
lubricated at 75 C. [bearing surface temperature] having viscosity of 0.0 II Pas.
The room temperature is 35 C. Take the minimum film thickness as V41h of
diametral clearance. The specific heat of oil is I850 J/kg C. the ratio of journal
diameter to diametral clearance is I 000.

sprocket at a pinion speed of 300 rpm. The loads are moderate shock. The
equipment is to run I8 hours/day. Specify the length and size of chain required
for a center distance about 25 pitches. [Take KL =I.3 and Ks=2 for moderate
shocks I8 Hrs/day]
