Derive an expression for the deflection and shear stress induced in a helical
spring.

Design a spring for an elevator shaft at the bottom of which 8 identical springs
are set in parallel to absorb the shock of the elevator in case of failure. The
weight of elevator is 60 KN & the counter weight is 20 KN. The elevator has a 10
free fall of 1.5 m from rest. The spring is made of 25 mm diameter rod.
Determine the maximum stress in each spring, if the spring index is 6 & each
spring has 15 active turns. Take G=84 GPa ..

A single plate friction clutch with both sides effective has 0.3 m outer diameter
and 0.16 m inside diameter. The coefficient of friction is 0.2 and it runs at 1000

rpm. Find the power transmitted assuming;
(i) Uniform wear condition
(ii) Uniform pressure condition
Take the allowable maximum pressure as 0.08 MPa.
b)
A differential band brake shown if fig operates on a drum of diameter 500 mm.
The drum rotates at 300 rpm counter clockwise and absorbs 36 KW. Jl=0.25.
Determine;
(i)
Force F required to operate the brake.
(ii)
Width of band if thickness is 5 mm and allowable tensile stress on the
band material is 72 MPa.
(iii)

What are the factors that contribute to dynamic loads m gears? Discuss 6
Buckingham's equation for dynamic load.
b)
Design a bronze spur gear (allowable static stress 81.4 MPa) and mild steel
pinion (allowable static stress 101 MPa) to transmit 5 KW at 1800 rpm. The
velocity ratio is 3.5. Pressure angle is 14 1h0 Assuming number of teeth on
pinion as 16, determine the module and face width. Also suggest suitable
hardness for the gear pair based on dynamic and wear load considerations.
