Activi t y #1: Choosing Your Genres

Write down the two genres you have chosen. Use APA citations and include all the necessary
information (title, author, date, URL, etc.).
Remember, for this class, one genre must be a scholarly article and the other must be from
the Iconography Category of genres.
Genre 1: Typography
Genre 2: Iconography

1.

Why did you select these genres?

The reason why I selected these two genres is because typography and iconography are
the most used in our world to spread a message around. Typography has been used
since long before music and videos where around. Now a day we see it in newspapers, in
Facebook posts to sign on the street, so I choose this genre because it is also the one that
always gives the most facts and the most proper information without trying to rush things.
The second genre is iconography, this genre is very popular today, people see it
everywhere, from YouTube commercials to the big screen TV, to even on our stories, such
as Instagram, snapchat, Facebook, and even vine. Iconography can give so many
meanings away without having to say anything, but just by showing a photo with a specific
filter over it, and a specific melody.

2.

What characteristics make these genres different from each other?

There is a difference between the two genres, the most noticeable one is that typography
can be an essay, a journal, a newsletter, a lot of words and a lot of opportunities to use
any kind of rhetorical appeals without trying to run out of time or space. Iconography has
to have a limited space, especially if its a commercial or something that is going to be
shown on a short period of time.

3.

Briefly explain w h a t they communicate about your subject/topic.

My subject is a very perhaps delicate subject, a subject that perhaps a lot of people dont
know about it in the world. However, these two genres help a lot spreading the message
to people around the world. Typography is very easy to use, a lot of college students read
in college, and iconography is very popular with every youth that watches any sort of
media device, witch pretty much narrows down to almost every kid in the US.

Composing the Body Paragraphs

You will be responsible for developing your analysis of your two genres in the following four
areas:
Audience and Purpose
To conduct a genre analysis, we first have to start with the purpose of the texts and form
whom they were intended. W hat was the purpose of the information that the genre
presented: to inform, persuade, and/or to entertain? How can a person tell? Then determine
who the specific, intended audience is; conduct an audience analysis: How much can we
assume the general public knows or is aware of the subject matter you are dealing with?
How do they usually react to this topic? Then, discuss the purpose.
Finally, you deal with style and language. W as the language formal or informal? Based on the
audience, is the language appropriate? Is there a specialized language to be found (jargon,
slang, puns, references, etc)and why was it important to the audience and purpose? If there is
a lack of languagewhy isnt it used? Does it rely on visuals instead? Does this again reflect
the parameters of the discourse community to whom it is addressed? If there is languagehow
much of it is there? Is it funny, serious, a slogan? Again, does this reflect the parameters of the
genre?
Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
Next we have to consider the content and the rhetoric involved. How did the creator(s) of the
genre set about making their argument/achieving their purpose? Did they attempt to establish
credibility by referring to experts in the discourse community? W ere they themselves experts in
the discourse community? Provide examples. If they did not, was this deliberate? Did they use
an emotional appeal (pathos) to persuade their audience? How? If not, was their avoidance of
pathos deliberate? Did they present statistics and facts (logos)? Provide examples. If they did
not, was this deliberate?
Structure and Delivery
Next it is important to consider each genres structure. How was it put togetherwas there a
specific order to itor sequence that was important to the content and purpose? How much
information could be provided in this structure? Why? If your genre is visual like a photograph,
consider how it was photographed (vectors, framing, cropping) or if a poster, how it was
designed (images, text, fonts, framing, etc). Basically, how was the information organized to
convey its message? You will need to explain why this was important to the overall genre.

The intended audience for a typography genre is a more educated
audience, an audience who makes research on the problems in the
world, and someone who is trying to help kids around the world.

What does the audience already know and what do they want to
know?
The audience already know that there is kids that are without a

a kid in the future and most importantly what the audience can do

How much time will the audience spend with each genre?
This genre is an article, so perhaps the audience is trying to get
themselves educated with the issue occurring in the world, so it they
could spend enough time studying this article.

What was the purpose (inform, persuade and/or entertain)?

The main purpose for this genre was to inform, the authors of the
article wanted to inform their audience that if the world didnt
intervene those children could suffer and it could damage their
lifes permanently. The author wanted people to know what was
happening in those kids hometowns.
How formal/informal is the language?
The language that was used was very formal, the article was written
to a scholarly journal, so they language that was used was very
professional because it wasnt just students that would be reading the
article but professor and any faculty member as well.
What specialized vocabulary is used?
The vocabulary that was used was very comprehensible, they
didnt want to intimidate their audience by using too much
sophisticated language, but more normal to be able to reach more

valid/reliable? If there is no evidence, what is used to help support
the information presented? The author uses a lot of evidence
backed up by the UN, she uses a lot of statistics and a lot of
numbers to indicate how many and by when would many be
affected and to even show how many of them will even make it.
How is the information organized to convey its message?
The information is shown through the whole article, the author starts
by giving its audience information and in the middle of the article as
well.

Are there limitations placed on the information because of the

genre? Does it have more freedom to express what it needs to
because of the genre? Yes the genre has a lot of freedom in
terms on how much space it had to give information. Obviously
the journal entree couldnt be very long either, but the author did
have are least a whole page open to give the audience all sorts
of information, and he did. The author gave a lot of information
and evidence to back up his information as well.
How does the structure facilitate its purpose?
The structure of the genre was to give an issue at the beginning
and evidence in the middle, and what would have happened in
the end if people didnt intervene to stop the issue. This
organization helps the audience to be aware to be informed and
to also know that there is a solution too.
