Learning Experience Plan

Subject: Math

Grade level: 9

Unit: Algebra

Length of LEP (days/periods/minutes): 1/1/25

Topic: Seeing Structure in Expressions

Content Standards:

(include only standards addressed in this LEP)

A-SSE 3b

3. Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain

properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum
or minimum value of the function it defines.

Learning Experience Outcomes

(knowledge/skills)

Learning Experience Assessments

1. Completing the Square Worksheet 1
2. Completing the Square Homework 1

Students will:
interpret parts of an expression, such
as various coefficients, factors, and
terms, in order to identify the different
components of an equation.
use the quadratic method of
completing the square in order to find
the value of the variable used in an
expression.

Procedures/Strategies
Day 1

(add additional days as needed)

Sponge Activity (activity that will be done as students enter the room to get them into the
mindset of the concept to be learned)

Students will describe different characteristics of presented graphs

Anticipatory Set (focus question/s that will be used to get students thinking about the days
lesson)

Did you know we can picture what these graphs look like without
needing to look at a picture of them?

Activating Prior Knowledge (what information will be shared with/among students to connect
to prior knowledge/experience)

They will know how to describe the graphs with words like straight,
curved, etc. from past experiences looking at graphs

Direct Instruction (input, modeling, check for understanding)

Standard Quadratic Form: ax2 + bx + c

Show the class how to solve a quadratic equation using the
completing the square method on the board
EX: x2 + 6x + 1 = 0, bring the 1 to the other expression in the
equation (0) and create a box next to bx and on the other side of the
equation with the value of (1/2)b2, move the constant c over to the
other side and solve for x
Second EX: x2 8x + 24 = 0

Guided Practice (how students will demonstrate their grasp of new learning)

The class will work on Completing the Square Worksheet 1 that

shows two different quadratic equations and two incorrect solutions
(with the work to reach each solution) for each equation. Using the
steps we went over in the Direct Instruction, the class will determine
where the solution went wrong and will fix the solution and get the
right answer.

Independent Practice (what students will do to reinforce learning of the lesson)

Students will complete Completing the Square Homework 1 for

homework using the new method they have learned for solving
quadratic equations. The homework is due at the beginning of the
following lesson.

Closure (action/statement by teacher designed to bring lesson presentation to an appropriate

close)

References:

It is very important to know how to solve quadratic equations both

by using the quadratic formula and by completing the square
because we will be starting our next project tomorrow that applies
these two methods to real life. We will be creating mathematical
models of a new amusement park ride using them!
