Benefit from ABBs World of Technology

ABB High Voltage Products is committed

to premier training solutions for the power
circuit breaker industry. A variety of training
packages are available, ranging from
sessions conducted at our factory on a
specific breaker, to sessions offered at the
customers site focusing on a specific job
or training requirement, to custom-designed
courses that meet the varied needs of our
customers.
ABB High Voltage Products can offer training
on currently manufactured circuit breakers
as well as vintage ABB, Westinghouse, ITE,
BBC and ASEA products. The training utilizes
design documents and records dating back to
the early 1900's. See chart for some of the
more common schools.

Factory Training
Power circuit breaker schools conducted at our factory are
offered at various times of the year. Each of these schools
covers a specific circuit breaker or the equipment utilized in
support of power circuit breakers.
The factory schools are designed with maximum hands-on
training, utilizing actual circuit breakers, interrupters, mechanisms,
control devices and mentoring by experienced factory and field
service professionals. The sessions are a unique learning
experience, drawing on the combined talents and expertise of
maintenance professionals, during interactive exercises, group
discussion and classroom question and answer sessions.
Factory training allows the individuals to learn and practice
maintenance routines in a supervised environment.

The following schedule is typical for our factory school:

DAY 1
Introduction to Breaker Fundamentals
Breaker Safety
- Switching
- Grounding
Pole Assembly
- Sling and Remodel of Bushings
- Cleaning and Maintenance
Bushings
Through Rods
Interrupter Theory and Maintenance
- Interrupter Removal
- Contact Inspection
- Troubleshooting

DAY 2
Operating Mechanism
- Principals and Maintenance Schedules
- Mechanism Disassembly/Reassembly
Troubleshooting

DAY 3
Installation and Commissioning
- Electrical Controls
CT's
Alarms and Lockouts
- Testing
Breaker Timing
Leak Detection
Moisture Analyzer
CT Ratio and Polarity
Micro Obm Test of Main Contacts
Multimeter
- Gas and Vacuum Procedure

Customer Site Training

ABB field service engineers often travel to customer sites and
conduct training on power circuit breakers and supporting
equipment. Training interrupters can be shipped to support the
hands-on learning modules. This training is typically two days
in length and covers the same topics as the factory school but
with somewhat limited interactive practice. The benefits of this
type of training include the ability of the customer to train up
to ten maintenance personnel at the same time, as well as a
minimized cost of travel and accommodations.

Customized Training
Each customer has a unique set of needs and we often customize
our training sessions to address those needs. The sessions are
designed in coordination with the customer and typically involve;
an initial conference call to obtain the necessary information to
create a format for the training session, a customer review of
the format to refine the session design, delivery of the session
outline to a small group of the customers frontline leaders in
order to ensure that the content addresses the organizations
needs and a last review with the customer before the training
is delivered in its final form. The customization of a training
program begins and ends with the Voice of the Customer as
the below process map describes.

Major Maintenance Training

The need for ABB knowledge programs is exhibited in the
growing number of requests for Major Maintenance Training.
This training format is designed to coincide with ten year
maintenance routines and consists of the training of up to ten
crew members by an ABB field service engineer during the
necessary maintenance work. Generally, the exercise begins
with classroom training of SF6 gas and byproducts, breaker
theory and maintenance routines. After the classroom sessions,
the crew proceeds to the target breaker and is trained, step by
step, through the maintenance procedure. This process allows
the crew to gain a detailed understanding of the circuit breaker,
maintenance processes and troubleshooting techniques.
